Quick Dam Flood Barriers So You Are Prepared for Whatever Fall (and Winter) Bring

Who doesn’t love singing in the rain?! I’ll tell you who, your property when the rain has overstayed its welcome and the flooding starts. With unpredictable weather constantly brewing it’s good to be prepared for flooding. Flood damage is one of the leading homeowner insurance claims, and can be mitigated by grabbing a bag of Quick Dam Flood Barriers and tucking them in your cabinet until needed.

They don’t need much space, and unlike traditional sandbags that are bulky, heavy, and often times sold out when you need them, Quick Dam rises to the occasion when needed (pun intended).

With a gel interior, Quick Dam Bags (and barriers) are water activated and swell upon contact with water. So, when you see the water pouring where it shouldn’t be open a bag, pull out a Quick Dam and place it in the way. Once water hits, the bags grow to 12in x 24in x 3.5in high. The Outdoor Plus Fireplaces & Waterfalls and more to Light UP Outdoor Living

Creating an outdoor oasis to relax from everyday stresses continues to be a trend at home, and with crisp fall nights ahead, adding a fire feature is a great way to extend the season and create cozy fall home vibes. However, Blink should not be confused for a “budget brand” home security system.

Blink still offers two-way talk, two-year battery life, and Chime app alerts for a fraction of the price compared to competitors. Blink may lack in picture quality or advanced motion detection, but is a quality home security system for those with a small budget or with light security needs.

Blink security products are actually popular among RV’ers due to their affordability.

Yes, some Makita is more expensive than RYOBI, but the Makita OUTDOOR ADVENTURE line offered more exciting products and had more multiuse, which is a huge value add. Also, the lineup of equipment does give consumers a slightly more deluxe camping experience, almost turning your adventure into a, dare I say, “glamping” experience.

Still, RYOBI offers great products for weekend campers or hikers who just want to pack a few comfort items. Also, RYOBI had a lot more to offer in portable power options. However, we don’t consider the ability to power a TV an essential camping experience.

General Contractor Brittany Bailey of Pretty Handy Girl normally enjoys shocking people with her home improvement skills, but in her Saving Etta series she discusses feeling like an outsider in her general contractor prep courses. Female welder Sarah Stork was laughed at by her male fabrication classmates and excluded from their team. Fortunately, this pushed her into creative metal arts where she is incredibly talented and successful (but you bet she still does traditional fabrication jobs).

But want some good news?

Twice as many women are entering the skilled trade professions today compared to 10 years ago, and women currently account for 14% of all skilled trade apprentices in the country. The number of female DIY’ers across the world has also skyrocketed. The hashtag #WomenWhoBuild took off on TikTok and Instagram during Covid as many women explored new hobbies, like DIY and woodworking, during lockdowns.

Duluth Trading Co. is my new favorite for women’s work shirts. They offer just as many different styles as Carharrt, but Duluth Trading Co. shirts have better functionality designed with women in mind, such as their “No Yank Tanks“. Also, these shirts come in a wide variety of prints and colors.

I know it may sound “so typical” for me to commend the style options, but I’ve done my time wearing men’s cut and sized workwear on my 5’1″ body. I’m ready to enjoy my workwear.

• Customer Review: “I love these tanks! I wear them under hoodies and flannels all winter and in the summer. I was skeptical about the “no yank” claim but these are amazing!”

Amazon Essentials Women’s 1, 2 or 4-pack T-Shirts

And sometimes you just need a cheap t-shirt, and four t-shirts for $28.50? Sign me up! Plus, this cotton/jersey blend is comfy, soft to the touch, and has a relaxed fit. Plus, there are a lot of combo and color options to choose from.

Oh, and 50k people gave these shirts an overall 4.5 rating. I think that means they are pretty solid.

(I’ll be honest, I want all of the Dovetail women’s work pants. But for simplicity, let’s talk about why the Britt Utility ones are great)

99% cotton. You are not going to feel stuffy in these. Then 1% spandex gives these pants just enough stretch. Dovetail describes these pants as “soft but indestructible” and isn’t that all we want? Plus you get 11 pockets! You’re also guaranteed a great variety with Dovetail. Their pants range from size 0 to 18, plus each size is made in short, standard, long, and extra long.

• Customer Review: “For the price, I really wanted to be disappointed in this product. I can not tell you how…..thoroughly how amazing these damn things feel. I’m a shortie and the regular length is perfect. No more shuffling pant legs against the ground. I was getting used to wearing the wranglers menfolk pants, they were comfy like PJs but lasted a month with what I do. These! OMG THESE! Blow every pair of pants I’ve ever worn out the water. As much as we love Dovetail overalls they can be a little expensive. Liberty makes a great alternative and costs a fraction of the price, with each pair of overalls selling for around $40-50.

Liberty also uses a high cotton, low spandex blend and makes their overalls with adjustable suspenders. Each pair has a great chest pocket, and Liberty overalls are much more machine-wash friendly.

It’s time to upgrade your snow blower, but what should you get: gas or electric? This is the common debate when buying new outdoor power equipment (OPE) today. Electric, specifically battery-powered, OPE technology has evolved to give us more power than we ever thought possible. But does it beat gas-powered snow blowers? Brief History of Snow Blowers

Snow blowers and overall snow removal machines have been around for a while, but the “Sicard Snow Remover Snowblower” invented by Arthur Sicard in 1925 was a breakthrough for modern snow blowers. It was a lot bigger than the average snow blowers of today. It was pretty much a glorified four-wheel drive truck with a snow scooper and two chutes, and it reportedly could throw snow up to 90 ft. But it was a beast. It wasn’t practical for clearing the suburban driveways of today.

In 1935 Henry Ariens, founder of The Ariens Company, managed to shrink down Sicard’s snow blower when he invented the first push snow blower. However, it would be about 20 years before Ariens would put a consumer snow blower on the market. Toro beat Ariens to market by almost 10 years with the 1952 Toro Snow Hound (check out this original ad).

The Toro Snow Hound played a big role in popularizing snow blowers among everyday homeowners. It was available to buyers for $159.95 (so that’s around $1,800 in today’s dollars) and it inspired more brands to develop their own consumer snow blowers. These first models ran on gas and could last a really long time with regular maintenance.

From here consumer snow blowers continued to develop. Today consumers can readily choose between first-, second- and third-stage snow blowers. Snow blowers have grown in regards to both power and clearing paths, and consumers now have a wide variety of electric snow blower options available.

Gas Snow Blowers

To compare electric vs gas snow blowers you really need to take a closer look at each type of snow blower. We’ll start with gas. Of course each type has their own advantages and disadvantages. Here are the benefits of gas-powered snow blower.

Pros of Gas-powered Snow Blowers

• Generally cheaper, at least up front.
• More gas models are currently available for 2-stage snow blowers and the only current option for 3-stage snow blowers.
• Can run as long as you have fuel. No waiting during recharge.
• Gas is long-standing and reliable technology. With regular maintenance, a lot of these machines have proven to last a long time.
• Dominant power source for your large second- and third-stage snow blowers.

While these are great reasons to choose a gas-powered snow blower there are some definite disadvantages.

Cons of Gas-powered Snow Blowers

• Heavy machines that can be more difficult to handle.
• Requires regular maintenance.
• Emits fumes that aren’t good to breathe and are harmful to the environment.
• Louder than electric alternatives. This could be considered annoying to the user or people nearby such as neighbors. It can also make the user less aware of their surroundings while using the snow blower.

When it comes to electric vs gas snow blowers, gas always reigned supreme. However, there has been a steady rise in electric snow blowers over the past 15 years, and each one redefining what electric snow blowers are capable of. Here’s a look at the benefits.

Pros of Electric Snow Blowers

• Choice of corded and cordless (battery) power source, which also gives you either a endless or reusable power source.
• No gas or fumes, and less maintenance than gas-powered machines.
• Generally lighter and easier to move than gas-powered snow blowers.
• Battery-powered technology and machines are constantly evolving and there has been a steady rise of powerful electric snow blowers available on the market.
• Wide variety of available electric first-stage snow blowers.

Again, no design is perfect. Here is a look at the drawbacks of electric snow blowers.

Cons of Electric Snow Blowers

• Performance is limited to the extent of your cord or your battery’s run time, and there is additional waiting during charge time.
• Generally costs more, at least upfront.
• Newer technology, newer design. We just don’t know yet how well electric snow blowers will hold up over time.
• Batteries should be stored away from extreme temps to avoid loss of life from exposure.
• For snow blowers there are limited electric second-stage snow blowers and no electric third-stage snow blowers currently available.
