Do you want to know how to make wood look distressed but are unsure about the process or the amount of skill it requires? Don’t be. SHOKARI Weathered Wood System is a new four-piece woodworking kit that allows you to easily give new, fresh wood an aesthetic distressed look in minutes. We have been experimenting with this new product at TIA and what to share with you what we have learned.

So, keep reading if you’d like to learn more about SHOKARI Weathered Wood System and how to distress wood in minutes with four simple steps.

Guide

What is SHOKARI Weathered Wood System?

How to make wood look distressed with SHOKARI

As we mentioned, SHOKARI Weathered Wood System is a woodworking weathering and distressing kit that allows you to give new wood a rustic distressed finish. What we didn’t tell you is that this proprietary four-step process was designed by professional cabinet makers. This system was designed as a quick and effective way to add a unique look to everyday cabinets.

The results were so well received and the process was so simple that this kit was created to help more woodworkers, carpenters, and DIY’ers achieve this finish.

Kit Includes…

  • 1 brass wire abrasive wheel
  • 2 nylon abrasive wheels
  • 1 sanding block

Users also need a power drill in order to use the kit. Also, the kit comes with three different abrasive wheels. Users won’t necessarily use each abrasive wheel every time. The two nylon abrasive wheels in particular give the user some control over the level of distressing for a custom finish.

Back to Guide

How to Make Wood Look Distressed in 4 Steps

But how does SHOKARI distress and weather wood? You can either watch the above video for a quick tutorial, or read through the four-step SHOKARI wood weather process…

  1. Attach brass wire wheel to your power drill and use to create grooves in smooth wood by running the edge of wheel along the wood’s surface and back. Work in lines and then go back over the whole surface with the brass wire abrasive wheel.
  2. Remove brass wire abrasive wheel and replace with step 2 nylon wheel (should be labeled with a number “2”). Repeat the step 1 process with the step 2 nylon wheel.
  3. Remove step 2 nylon wheel and replace with step 3 nylon wheel. NOTE: Step 3 is NOT required and only necessary if you’d like to enhance the distressed wood surface with a softer nylon abrasive wheel.
  4. Set aside your drill and pick up the sanding block. Go over the same wood surface with the sanding block. Use the block to take down the edges.

All done! It actually only takes users 3-4 steps to artfully distress wood with the SHOKARI kit. From here users have the choice to keep the wood raw, stain it, treat it, paint it, burn it, or apply any other finish.

*NOTE: The four-step process does not cover the precautionary steps and measures mentioned in the SHOKARI instruction manual.

Back to Guide

Is SHOKARI Weathered Wood System Worth the Price?

For $34.95 on Amazon you get a sanding block and three different abrasive wheels, plus the whole step-by-step process on how to make wood look distressed. Not only is this a great price, but if you’re a woodworker interested in selling your products, you could potentially make all of your money back and more by selling your unique weathered wood works. At only $34.95 the SHOKARI kit also makes a great gift for new woodworkers ready to advance their skills.

SHOKARI Weathered Wood System Project Ideas

So what can you do with a SHOKARI Weathered Wood System woodworking kit? Honestly, the ideas are endless. If it can be made out of wood then it can be distressed. Here are just a few project ideas we have at TIA (keep an eye out for them).

  • Distressed wood dresser
  • Distressed wood shelves
  • Distressed wood table or end tables
  • Distressed wood chandelier
  • Distressed wood picture frames
  • Distressed wood paneling

Also, don’t forget, distressing wood is just one way to customize a project. Once the wood is distressed the new texture allows you to achieve a unique look for a variety of finishes. We personally like the results of lightly painting or burning the distressed exterior. But feel free to experiment with a few different methods.

Alright, now that you know how to make wood look distressed in minutes with the SHOKARI Weathered Wood System, would you give it a try? Let us know yes or no and what projects you have in mind.

Do you love summer but want to take a break from the unrelenting heat sometimes? In 2014 we shared how Arctic Cove 18V Bucket Top Misting Fans offer an an affordable and portable way to cool off during your summer activities, such as sports games, yard work, or outdoor parties. The Arctic Cove fans have since been discontinued, but RYOBI Misting Fans have filled the void with multiple ways for you to cool off with a refreshing mist this summer.

The most exciting part about RYOBI Misting Fans is that RYOBI offers consumers two different models to choose from. Let’s take a look at what RYOBI offers.

But first…

“Did RYOBI Buy Arctic Cove Misting Fans?”

RYOBI didn’t have to. Arctic Cove and RYOBI are both owned by Techtronic Industries (TTI). This is why Arctic Cove misting fans were compatible with RYOBI 4.0Ah batteries. TTI appeared to just white label the fans with another one of the company’s brands.

Our 2014 article actually received a lot of positive feedback about the Arctic Cove fans. However, RYOBI is the number one homeowner/DIY’er power tool and outdoor power equipment (OPE) brand. TTI likely realized the fans would sell better under the RYOBI brand.

According to Reddit, the bucket top misting fan actually went between the two brands with RYOBI supposedly selling it initially. So, it’s not shocking the product ended back with RYOBI, which has expanded on misting fan options for consumers.

RYOBI Misting Fans

As we said, RYOBI has at least two different misting fan options, along with multiple packages for consumers to select from. Let’s take a closer look at the two main options.

RYOBI ONE+ 18V Bucket Top Misting Fan

  • Product Name: RYOBI ONE+ 7-1/2 in. Bucket Top Misting Fan Kit
  • Model #: PCL851K
  • Features: Mists up to 14 ft. for over five hours with included battery kit, produces 840 FPM of air velocity, has two speed and two mist settings, can be used with a bucket or garden hose, quiet WHISPER SERIES performance, and comes with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty.
  • TIA Review: This kit is identical to the Arctic Cove misting fan. It even comes with the same amp 1.5 Ah battery but with a true RYOBI label. This should also be compatible with strong RYOBI batteries for increased runtime.
  • Where to Buy: RYOBI 18V Bucket Top Misting Fan Kit is $99 from The Home Depot.

RYOBI ONE+ 18V Misting Air Cannon Fan

  • Product Name: RYOBI ONE+ 18V Hybrid WHISPER SERIES 12 in. Misting Air Cannon Fan
  • Model #: PCL8501K
  • Features: Mists up to 15 ft. for up to seven hours with battery, or continuous with cord; has airflow of 1,400 CFM and 620 FPM air speed, features a pivoting head, two speed settings, and quiet WHISPER SERIES performance.
  • TIA Review: This model lacks the bucket top function, but is a larger RYOBI misting fan with a larger battery. This is a great option for people who plan on using this misting fan with a hose and is perfect for home use.
  • Where to Buy: RYOBI ONE+ 18V Misting Air Cannon Fan Kit is $199 from The Home Depot.

Already have a RYOBI battery? Browse RYOBI Misting Fan tool-only options at The Home Depot. You can find a limited supply of select RYOBI Misting Fans on Amazon as well.

More Summer A/C Hacks

The RYOBI Misting Fans are probably the best “portable A/C hacks” due to their design, price, and RYOBI’s dependable performance. However, we have a few additional A/C hacks for those trying hard to stay cool this summer.

Can you believe these A/C hacks? I think I’ll stick with getting a RYOBI Misting Fan this summer. Tell us in the comments what’s the craziest thing you have done to beat the heat.

High school graduation is just around the corner and many students are proudly announcing the university and college programs they are entering this fall. It’s an exciting time for high schoolers, but students entering the skilled trades can feel left out. Enter Stanley Black & Decker’s “Trade Proud” initiative – a campaign designed to give students an opportunity to feel proud about their non-college plans and draw attention to the importance of the skilled trade profession.

Tomorrow, May 1, 2024, is also National Skilled Trades Day, and what better way for incoming skilled trade workers to celebrate than by announcing their post-high school career plans?

What is “Trade Proud”?

Trade Proud banner

Stanley Black & Decker wants high school students who are planning to enter the skilled trades after graduation to announce their post-high school plans with a free downloadable digital banners provided on their company website. They also encourage these students to use the hashtag #TradeProud in their social media announcements to build community for these students while promoting awareness for the skilled trade professions.

Why are the Skilled Trade Professions Important?

U.S. high schools have historically emphasized the importance of attending college after high school graduation, but fail to provide students with any information towards alternative career paths. In fact, the removal of Shop and Home Economics classes has pushed students further from the skilled trades and possibly contributed to the drop in people entering skilled trade professions.

This is a huge disservice to students because skilled trade jobs are in-demand, apprenticeships and most trade schools are more affordable than most universities, and they can enter the work force sooner. Skilled trade jobs also often pay well, have union benefits and opportunities, and are vital to the function of our modern world.

We thank plumbers and construction workers for our clean water and sewer systems. Electricians obviously provide electricity but also allow our hospitals and schools to function. Skilled trade professionals build the homes we live in, the roads we drive on, and the furniture and appliances we use.

Every part of our daily life – from function, to comfort, to health, is possible because of a skilled trade worker. Students entering the skilled trade professions deserve to be just as proud of their career decisions as their friends going to college.

Thank you Stanley Black & Decker for “Trade Proud” and allowing these students to be proud of their career decisions and reminding us of the importance of the skilled trade professions.

The skilled trade professions are one of the most dangerous work fields, with construction injuries accounting for over 50% of workplace accidents. Jobsite accidents, heart hazards, musculoskeletal injuries are all risks these workers face at work each day. But here is some good news. Multiple tool brands are developing better safety technology for power tools, equipment, and even workwear meant to prevent these injuries and even death.

Today we take a closer look at the brands and products that are paving the way for a safer workplace for skilled trade workers.

Kinds of Safety Technology

Power Tool Safety Trends

Over the last few years there have been at least four key trends power tool engineers have been following to make existing tools safer. The trends we noticed are:

  • Built-in movement sensors.
  • Auto shutoff or kill switch features.
  • Redesigned to be lighter and/or more ergonomic.
  • Better batteries.

Safety Sensors

A lot of power tools are being redesigned with movement sensors that can detect when a tool makes a sudden or irregular movement, or detects a tool is in an unideal position.

The DeWALT 20V Stud and Joist Drill we reviewed last year is a great example of this. This drill has DeWALT’s E-Clutch System®. A stud and joist drill can swing out while in use and injure the user. The E-Clutch System® senses sudden or big movements to the left or right and will turn the drill off to protect the user.

The Hilti Nuron AG 6D-22 Grinder is another power tool and possibly the first angle grinder with a built-in safety sensor, which Hilti calls “SensTech”. SensTech senses those same big and sudden movements, but in any direction to protect the user from kickback. SensTech can also tell if the grinder is held vertically – this is an unideal position and the tool won’t run when held like this.

Overall, the trend in these sensors is to lookout for dangerous movement and shutoff tools before they cause injury. Which leads up to our next power tool safety technology trend…

Auto Shutoff & Kill Switch Features

As we mentioned, power tool safety technology is advancing to prevent injury before it happens. Auto shutoff is a great preventative feature. We’ve also noticed both the addition and redesign of kill switches so that they are quick and easy to access when you need to.

The obvious difference between these two features is that auto shutoff is the tool or machine turning itself off to prevent injury, and a kill switch is a way for the user to quickly and safely turn off the tool.

Kill switches aren’t new, but there’s a heightened emphasis on their location and ease of use. A kill switch is a great feature, but it’s useless if the user can’t easily trigger it when needed.

Lightweight & Ergonomic Redesign

Bosch Cordless Jig Saw

Power tools are constantly being redesigned to be lighter than previous models. There is also an emphasis on ergonomics. Both of these contribute to improving the user experience by creating power tools that are easier to control.

But is redesigning power tool considered “safety technology”? Actually, it is.

Along with statements of newly designed tools being lighter, they are often more powerful as well. This ties back into the tech and battery design. Improving these elements usually involves making them more compact without making them weaker, which feeds into a more positive and safer user experience.

Better & Safer Battery Technology

Cordless power is continuously improving, but packing in more power is not necessarily the #1 priority. Power tool and battery manufacturers know that better heat management leads to a better battery, whether it’s tabless lithium, a graphene battery, or a better temperature management system.

All of these options result in a battery that can go longer without overheating, has better energy transfer, and improves all-around battery life.

Ergonomic Support

As power tools have become safer engineers have been able to widen their view and look at other causes of accidents and injuries.  This has lead to the development of more ergonomic support safety technology and equipment meant to protect the long-term musculoskeletal health of skilled trade professionals, especially those in the construction field.

Hilti

Hilti has developed two different ergonomic supports recently. In 2023 the company released the Hilti EXO-S Shoulder Exoskeleton, it was designed to help with overhead tasks. This year Hilti released the Hilti EXO-T-22 Tool Balancer. The Tool Balancer is designed to give a more “zero-gravity” experience during heavy wall demolition, it relieves nearly 40 lbs. of carrying weight for the user, and as a bonus allows for more drilling angles.

Hilti is the most accessible brand for this ergonomic support tech and equipment for skilled trade professionals, in our opinion. The products are readily accessible on the Hilti site and are designed for the construction industry.

Competitors

  • Festool: The Festool ExoActive is another upper body exoskeleton support for construction workers. Unfortunately, as of right now the Festool ExoActive has limited availability at best.
  • EksoBionics: This company primarily focuses on products for rehabilitation, but does have a variety of construction products.
  • Cyberdyne: Another primarily medical company, but does offer some “non-medical”.

Both Panasonic and Toyota have been developing their own exoskeletons, but no big developments have been made since 2019.

Affordable Alternatives

The Hilti exoskeletons range from $1,449-1,999. These products are generally intended for large construction teams and the industrial construction field. Here are some everyday ergonomic supports to prevent and alleviate aches and pains:

For everyday strategies to prevent injuries, the CDC created the free download Simple Solutions Ergonomics for Construction Workers PDF.

Smart Workwear & PPE

Wearable technology, like FitBit and smart watches, is making its way into workwear and personal protective equipment (PPE). No, it’s not to just count your steps. This technology offers a variety of safety features that includes:

  • Stress detection among workers
  • Fall detection.
  • Send SOS/emergency alerts.
  • Provides GPS directions and location.
  • Effective communication between workers.
  • Better equipment monitoring.

All of this allows workers to better manage their teams. They’re able to identify stressed workers who need a break, pinpoint and get help to an injured worker, ensure tools are ready and safe to use, and more.

Smart watches and high-tech walkie-talkies are the most popular smart devices. However, more smart devices are being developed.

Smart Hard Hats

The Teq Shield Communicator is one smart hardhat in development. In additional to standard ANSI Glass-G certification, it offers precise location tracking, has presence and proximity detection, and has audio and video capabilities.

SolePower Smartboots

Smart work boots is an industry many are competing for, but SolePower has made the biggest strides (pun intended).

SolePower Smartboots are currently designed for military, first responders, and industrial workers. They are designed to provide real-time insights while monitoring energy and fatigue, detecting falls and injuries, worker tracking, and proximity detections and alerts.

These boots don’t appear to be available to the public yet, but you can request a demo.

Who makes the best ladder? This is one of my endless quests. I have always been impressed by brands WERNER and Gorilla Ladders. But even a stable ladder made from quality materials still feels awkward to work on, you strain your sides and back reaching because it can’t get close enough to your project, and it’s not versatile enough to use for every project. Well, Louisville Ladder must have been listening because they’re new cross-step ladder addresses all these common problems.

This year I went to World of Concrete and I got to spend some time at the Louisville Ladder booth. They showed me their new and improved Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder. It has a ton of unique features and has the versatility to work with the majority of projects.

You can check out the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder in our TIA video. But I’m still going to tell you why I think it’s the new best ladder.

Features of the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder

  • Available sizes
  • Step ladder/shelf ladder combination
  • Can be placed up against walls
  • Anti-slip non-marring Pro Top and feet
  • Patented V-Shape Pro Top
  • Weight capacity and safety rating
  • Supply Tray

Available Sizes

The best ladder, the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder comes in sizes 4 ft., 6 ft., 8 ft., 10 ft., and 12 ft.

The new and improved Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder (series FXS1400HD) is available in 4 ft., 6 ft., 8 ft., 10 ft., and 12 ft. The price on these ladders ranges from $151.99 to $436.99 at The Home Depot.

The previous Cross-Step FXS1500 series is extremely similar. Those ladders have a lot of the same features and comes in all the same sizes. However, the previous series is bright orange and has a lower max weight capacity of 300 lbs.

Step Ladder/Shelf Ladder Combination

This ladder is designed to be leaned up against walls or pop-out the second set of legs. The anti-slip feet have increased surface area to prevent the ladder from sliding out.

Get Closer

The step ladder is designed so that the support legs fit more directly under the shelf so the legs don’t spread out as far. This allows you to get closer to the work area. No more stretching and reaching. So, no more aches and strains to your torso and arms.

Anti-Slip Non-Marring Pro Top & Feet

The ladder gets extra stability, especially when propped up against a wall from the anti-slip non-marring Pro Top shelf at the top, and feet on the bottom. The non-marring feature also prevents the ladder from buffing the surface it’s pressed up against.

Patented V-Shape Pro Top

The best ladder, the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder hangs onto corners

In addition to the anti-slip and non-marring features, the Pro Top shelf also has a patented v-shaped divot. This divot also has the anti-slip material. Together this v-shaped divot allows the ladder to hug onto corners. This grip is further secured by the anti-slip feet.

All around, this simple design adds a unique functionality to the ladder.

Weight Capacity & Safety Rating

This is a fiberglass ladder with a 375 lb. weight capacity. This weight capacity is the highest weight capacity for ladders in this size range.

Fiberglass is also considered a non-conductive material. This makes the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder an ideal ladder for electricians, or when working with or near electricity in general.

This ladder is also ANSI and OSHA certified.

Supply Tray

As a final bonus, Louisville Ladder says this ladder is equipped with a “magnet tray, hardware tray, drill and tool slots, and pipe or 2×4 holder.”

Value

Again, the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder comes in a variety of sizes from 4 ft. to 12 ft. and range in price from $151.99 to $436.99 at The Home Depot.

Louisville Ladders tend to price on the higher side of average, but the price reflects the quality. A WERNER ladder of the same height, material and weight capacity would be similar in price.

Example, an 8 ft. Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder sells for $267.99 at The Home Depot, and a similar 8 ft. WERNER ladder sells for $257. Yes, the WERNER is cheaper. They are both made from fiberglass and have the same 375 lb. weight capacity. But the WERNER ladder is missing the secure feet, the non-slip shelf, it doesn’t fit on corners, and it doesn’t position against a wall.

For $11 more the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder offers more versatility and utility than a comparable WERNER. That’s an incredible amount of value for a small difference in price.

Best Ladder?

Ladders are a simple design that many people don’t think twice about. But professionals and serious DIY’ers know how important it is to feel safe and comfortable while working. The Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder offers these people a variety of options for a fair and average price.

It’s a no brainer for me. This is the best ladder for pros.

I also think the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder makes a great household ladder because of its versatility to work as a traditional step ladder, be leaned against walls, and fit onto corners. This ladder should work in most household applications.

Would you give the Louisville Ladder Cross-Step Ladder a chance? Do you think there’s a better ladder out there?

Comment with who you think makes the best ladder.

Last week RYOBI announced a new battery coming this summer, the RYOBI ONE+ 18V Lithium High Performance EDGE. While RYOBI announced limited information about this new battery, it potentially rivals the Milwaukee FORGE battery. These batteries supposedly have a similar battery technology that improves power, runtime, heat management, and overall lifespan. But which battery is better?

Today we are going RYOBI EDGE vs Milwaukee FORGE to find out which power tool battery is better, and if either of these batteries are worth upgrading your battery platform.

RYOBI VS Milwaukee

RYOBI EDGE Battery Coming Soon

RYOBI EDGE battery YouTube comments

First, I’d like to mention that RYOBI has provided limited details about its new RYOBI ONE+ 18V HP EDGE batteries. The RYOBI EDGE teaser video was immediately hit with comments calling it “uninformative”. Between the video, the webpage, and newsletter announcements, RYOBI has only publicly stated this battery will deliver “more, more, and MORE!”

But HOW are RYOBI EDGE batteries better than previous generations?

Tabless Lithium

RYOBI reported the new EDGE battery will utilize tabless lithium battery cells. While that’s all RYOBI has publicly said about the coming battery platform, info is circulating that each battery will have 21,700 tabless lithium cells.

But what is tabless lithium?

Tabless lithium is a new battery technology that offers better performance with simultaneous better cooling. It’s known for powering the new 2022 Tesla models, but power tool brands are racing to apply it to their own battery technology.

The Milwaukee MX FUEL REDLITHIUM FORGE battery is the first power tool battery to apply tabless lithium technology. The result? Improved run time, better cooling, and shorter charge times, all of which should hopefully result in longer battery lifespan.

Back to Guide

RYOBI EDGE VS Milwaukee FORGE

Without more info about the upcoming RYOBI EDGE battery we can’t say for sure which battery is better, but we can make some assumptions.

What We Know

  • RYOBI and Milwaukee are both owned by Techtronic Industries (TTI).
  • RYOBI tools are generally cheaper and geared towards homeowners and DIY’ers.
  • RYOBI EDGE appears to be an all-tabless lithium battery line.
  • Milwaukee FORGE uses multiple battery technologies.
  • Milwaukee tools are generally more expensive and geared toward skilled trade professionals.

These facts leave me confident about a few things:

Shared Features

TTI designed Milwaukee FORGE batteries to fit existing M18 batteries. I bet TTI also designed RYOBI EDGE batteries to fit existing RYOBI ONE+ power tools. We need to wait to confirm this, but I think TTI sees the advantage of not forcing potential and/or existing customers to upgrade all of their power tools for a battery.

The fact that both brands have a new tabless lithium battery that is compatible with existing 18V power tools is great, but also pretty much where the similarities between these two batteries end.

Back to Guide

Advantages of RYOBI EDGE

RYOBI Tools logo

  • RYOBI EDGE should be cheaper than Milwaukee FORGE.
  • RYOBI EDGE can set a new baseline of battery power for everyday consumers.

The RYOBI EDGE battery will cost less than tabless lithium Milwaukee FORGE batteries.

RYOBI products are generally cheaper than Milwaukee products. RYOBI is designed for the everyday homeowner and DIY’er. RYOBI makes good products. But their power tools are designed for much smaller projects than Milwaukee power tools, which need to stand up to repeated heavy use.

The RYOBI EDGE battery will also cost less than the tabless lithium Milwaukee FORGE battery because it’s a smaller battery. The RYOBI EDGE battery is a 4.0Ah tabless lithium battery and the Milwaukee FORGE is available as an 8.0Ah or 12.0Ah tabless lithium battery. The Milwaukee FORGE battery is just a much bigger battery. However, a lot of home projects don’t need that much power.

The advantage of RYOBI making a 4.0Ah battery is that they can cut the cost for consumers without sacrificing the construction or quality.

RYOBI is also doing everyday consumers a favor. Tabless lithium is clearly an exciting technology, but the pros don’t get all the power. RYOBI created a battery that is accessible for most people.

“Do I need a RYOBI EDGE battery?

Some RYOBI customers are asking if they will want to upgrade their existing RYOBI battery to a new RYOBI EDGE battery.

Our answer: YesIF you use a lot of high-draw power tools (chain saws, circular saws, string trimmers, etc.).

Also, only upgrade your battery if you want more power. If you’re satisfied by the power and performance of your current RYOBI power tools, then wait until your current battery performance starts to diminish or a tool purchase demands the upgrade.

Back to Guide

Advantages of Milwaukee FORGE

Milwaukee Tools logo

  • Consumers know all the specs and features of the new Milwaukee FORGE tabless lithium batteries.
  • Milwaukee FORGE tabless lithium batteries bring pros a whole new level of power.
  • The Milwaukee FORGE battery line is not limited to one battery technology.

Right now, the biggest advantage of the Milwaukee MX FUEL REDLITHIUM FORGE batteries is that they are available now and we have all the facts.

New Milwaukee FORGE Battery Features

  • Have twice as much runtime than popular MX FUEL REDLITHIUM 6.0Ah batteries
  • Can fully recharge in as little as 65 minutes
  • Have multiple COOL-CYCLE features for heat management
  • Reportedly has the longest overall life of Milwaukee batteries
  • Compatible with existing M18 power tools

Consumers can get this Milwaukee FORGE battery today and know exactly what’s promised. You can’t say the same about RYOBI EDGE.

The next biggest advantage is power. The Milwaukee FORGE tabless lithium battery is available as an 8.0Ah or 12.0Ah battery. This battery is huge. These batteries have 2-3 times more amp hours than what we know RYOBI EDGE batteries have, which pros need on the jobsite.

Now, Milwaukee has a few different Milwaukee FORGE batteries. The Milwaukee MX FUEL REDLITHIUM FORGE 8.0Ah and 12.0Ah batteries are the first to use tabless lithium. The new smaller 6.0Ah batteries use pouch cell. In theory Milwaukee could transition to strictly tabless. We don’t know. But what this variety of battery technology says about the Milwaukee FORGE battery line is that Milwaukee won’t limit its batteries to a single technology. As new technology develops, so will Milwaukee batteries.

We can’t say for sure that RYOBI EDGE will be a solely tabless lithium line. But as of right now, that’s how RYOBI has positioned it.

“Do I need a Milwaukee FORGE battery?”

These new Milwaukee FORGE batteries cost $849-$1,149. Is the battery upgrade necessary for the skilled trade professional?

Our answer: Yes–IF you need more power for those high-draw power tools.

Back to Guide

TTI: the ultimate winner

Techtronic Industries (TTI) logo

Look, it’s simple:

  • If you are a homeowner or a weekend DIY’er, RYOBI EDGE is the clear winner.
  • If you’re a skilled trade professional, then the new Milwaukee FORGE batteries are perfect to power your high-draw power tools day in and day out.

But the true winner here is TTI. TTI successfully developed a new battery for two different markets before any other brand.

The Milwaukee FORGE 8.0 & 12.0Ah batteries are already available at The Home Depot and RYOBI EDGE batteries will be out this summer. Technically, another DIY brand could sneak in and beat RYOBI to market, but we’re confident that the RYOBI EDGE battery will be available soon.

#NewToolNews! The RIDGID Lifetime Service Agreement (LSA) has been regarded as the best warranty on the market, and now it just got better with the new RIDGID Service Direct Program (SDP).

Before the new program the RIDGID Lifetime Service Agreement allowed all owners of registered RIDGID power tools and batteries free repairs, parts, and replacements if their devices failed with regular use. Now those same customers simply ship their registered power tools and batteries to RIDGID. Trained technicians do the full assessment and repairs or replacements, and then ship it back to customers in as little as 14 days.

Why RIDGID Service Direct Program?

The point of this program is to decrease the downtime from an essential power tool or battery being out of commission. Customers also no longer have to fit it into their schedule to take their tools to a RIDGID Service Center. Customers simply mail the tool in.

How Does RIDGID Service Direct Program Work?

As long as the tool or battery is registered, customers just need to sign into their RIDGID account and submit a claim.

What RIDGID Products are Eligible for SDP?

A large portion of RIDGID’S power tools and batteries are eligible for the Service Direct Program. This includes all batteries, most small to medium power tools, and most outdoor power equipment (OPE).

RIDGID does provide a list of ineligible products on their website.

Ineligible RIDGID SDP Products

  • Most saws: tile saws, table saws, scroll saws, bandsaws, miter saws
  • Compressors
  • Planers
  • Joiners
  • Stands
  • Drain augers
  • Generators
  • Pressure washers

How to Register RIDGID LSA

  1. New RIDGID customers need to make an online RIDGID account, existing customers just need to log into their account.
  2. Once inside, RIDGID customers just need to select “REGISTER NEW PURCHASE”. They will then be prompted to enter info including the model and serial numbers, and receipt information.
  3. Once completed customers submit their information and wait for approval from RIDGID.
  4. Once approved customers will receive a RIDGID Lifetime Service Agreement approval email.

If the process is still unclear, customers can check out this RIDGID Lifetime Service Agreement Registration Guide.

What’s Next?

Is this the best warranty out there? If so, how can other power tool companies compete with it and what edge do competitors still have? Let us know in the comments.

Design & Features

CRAFTSMAN 26 in. snow blower engine and fuel tank
CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower fuel tank and engine

Let’s start with the power on this CRAFTSMAN 26 in. snow blower. It is powered by a 243cc engine. This thing is mighty. We’re are at the top end of engine sizes for second stage snow blowers. However, it’s gas powered but has electric start. So, no fussing with the engine, pulling a cord waiting for the engine to catch, or mixing oil while out in the cold.

You get a nice quick start and are good to go.

CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower steel auger

For breaking up the ice you have a 12 in. sawtooth steel auger. This is what clears those 26 in. wide and 20 in. high paths.

CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower steel chute
CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower steel chute

Whatever snow this CRAFTSMAN picks up heads into the steel chute. The chute has a 200-degree rotation, easily controlled by a joystick easily accessible on the control panel by the grips. The blower will launch that snow up to 40 ft. in whatever direction you choose.

Speaking of controls, the handles have a comfortable ergonomic grip. The snow blower’s speed is easy to control with a simple lever on the right side. You have six forward speeds and two reserve speeds.

You may notice that the controls on this blower aren’t “high tech”. No digital control panel or overloaded with gadgets. Instead, you just have simple controls that are self-explanatory and easy to use. There is nothing overly complicated about this set-up and that’s what you want when you have snow blowing in your face and you just want to get your driveway clear so you can go back inside.

You also get two 15 in. snow tires for better control and LED headlights for better visibility in snowy weather.

Back to Guide

CRAFTSMAN Snow Blower Performance

Again, the snow we had was really wet. One of our employees single-stage snow blowers couldn’t even pick the snow up. You definitely need a higher-quality snow blower for this wet, freezing snow. This CRAFTSMAN 26 in. snow blower wasn’t even phased. It picked up the snow, the chute never got jammed, and it managed to still launch that snow despite how heavy it was.

Value of CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower

As we mentioned earlier, the full retail price for this CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower out of the gate is $1,199, and at this time you can actually get $100 off at Lowe’s.

When you compare this to other snow blowers, the CRAFTSMAN snow blower is $100-200 cheaper than the comparable Cub Cadet 2X 26 in. 243cc 2-stage Snow Blower at The Home Depot. With the discount it’s the same price as the Troy-Bilt Storm 26 in. 2-stage Snow Blower, which has a lot of the same features but a smaller engine. That seems to be the trend. If a snow blower is cheaper than the CRAFTSMAN then it’s probably missing something in terms of power, features, or performance.

The CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower is a great price for a high-quality snow blower. If I wore hats I’d have to tip it to CRAFTSMAN. They did a great job with this product.

Back to Guide

Final Review of CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower

Overall, the CRAFTSMAN “Select 26” Snow Blower is a great second-stage gas powered snow blower. You get top-of-the-line power for a very competitive price. I say act now while it’s still $100 off at Lowe’s. But full price or not, the CRAFTSMAN 26 in. Snow Blower is a worthwhile investment.

What about you? What is your experience with CRAFTMAN snow blowers?

Let us know your model and if you recommend it or like the idea of upgrading to the new 26 in. model.

The process is simple whether you are redeeming a Makita item you already purchased or are purchasing promotional rebate items. Whichever camp you fall into, the first step is to head to MakitaTools.com/eRebates. Here you will immediately find a list of rules and regulations and current Makita rebate promotions.

From here the process of submitting your Makita eRebates claim is intuitive, but here is an overview of the steps…

  1. Search MakitaTools.com/eRebates on your computer browser.
  2. Either select the promotion you are redeeming OR search your product’s serial number in the Makita eRebates search bar.
  3. Fill out the form with details such as store/retailer information, your shipping address, and claim/promotional offer you are redeeming.
  4. On the same form, you will be asked to upload UPC and serial numbers of your purchased promotional product, and images of the receipt(s). File sizes must be under 100MB.
  5. Review and submit your claim.

From here you will receive information on how to view the status of your claim.

If you do not currently own one of the Makita promotion eRebate items the site makes it easy for you to purchase your promotional items. Use the Makita eRebates Authorized Dealer search, select a dealer with your rebate product(s) and use them to purchase your product. Depending on the seller and the checkout info you are provided, you may be able to immediately submit your Makita eRebates claim. Otherwise, you can submit your claim after you receive your product(s).

Rules & Regulations

  • You need a Makita Tools account to redeem eRebates.
  • Your tool purchase must be from a Makita eRebates Authorized Dealer.
  • Rebate products must be on a single receipt. Otherwise multiple claims are required.
  • Item(s) must be purchased within the specified rebate promotional timeframe.
  • “Maximum 5 items per promotion with 25 redemptions.”
  • Makita has additional “Terms & Conditions” viewable on the Makita eRebates website.

Makita eRebates Authorized Dealers

These authorized dealers will vary according to your location. However, the Makita eRebates provides an easy way to lookup authorized dealers and the list is very broad, at least in our location.

The list provides two options: dealers from brick and mortar stores or online retailers. The online list included 22 retailers, including The Home Depot and the Makita Amazon Storefront. So, if you don’t have a physical Makita eRebates Authorized Dealer near you there are still plenty of online options. In fact, I’d say there are so many easy to find options that you mostly want to stay away from any third-party retailers to secure your rebate.

Each year tool brands from around the world compete with each other to put out newer and better tools that raise the standards for tool users everywhere. This has led to insanely powerful tools for both pros and everyday homeowners. But where do we go from here? Some say a new battery type is coming and some think graphene batteries are the answer. In fact, brands like CAT have already invested in the technology and have a lineup of tools powered by graphene batteries.

But can graphene really out perform lithium-ion? Today’s #NewToolNews deep dives into graphene battery technology and what it can mean for the future of power tools.

Guide

What is Graphene?

Will graphene batteries replace lithium-ion

Never heard of graphene? Have you ever seen a graphite rock?

Well, from a scientific standpoint, graphite is a naturally occurring element made from “carbon rich materials” found in rocks. Graphene is just a one atom-thick layer extracted from this same material. Not so wild, right?

But why do people want to put graphene in power tools?

Unlike lithium-ion, graphene is a “quasi-metal”, meaning it shares a lot of characteristics of metal without being one. One of these characteristics is that it is a conductor and it’s a very good one, maybe even the best. This is one of the major reasons people are interested in incorporating it into battery technology, because it could more effectively transfer energy from battery to tool. This transfer is actually where the majority of battery power loss occurs. In theory, graphene batteries should also recharge more quickly for the same reason.

In addition to better energy transfer, graphene batteries should offer better thermal control. This would prevent batteries from overheating, which leads to longer performance and overall longer battery life. This could also result in safer batteries all around.

Advantages of Graphene Batteries

Now that you are aware of what graphene is and what makes it appealing for power tools, here is a roundup of the potential benefits of graphene batteries:

  • Longer battery life
  • More battery life cycles
  • Faster recharge times
  • Improve heat control
  • Safer, less combustible batteries
  • Made from renewable resources

Back to Guide

Disadvantages of Graphene Batteries

Graphene batteries have a lot of exciting potential, but there still are some disadvantages:

  • Expensive to produce and manufacture
  • Battery technology is still in development
  • Lack of certainty about mass production

Despite all of the potential for graphene batteries, it will probably be a few years before we see significant developments. Creating graphene is an expensive and relatively new process. Scientists successfully extracted graphene for the first time in only 2004. This process is barely 20 years old. Unless the process of creation becomes cheaper, graphene batteries will struggle to become a mainstream option for consumers. Because even if graphene batteries are great, the price point might just be too high.

Will Graphene Replace Lithium-Ion?

Graphene very well still could replace Lithium-Ion in power tools. Yes, this is a new process. However, it’s also a fast evolving process. CAT has already applied the technology to some of its own power tools. More companies are also experimenting with graphene batteries, such as Samsung and a few auto manufacturers.

At this point I’m not confident enough to say that graphene batteries will become the number one power source for everyday consumers. However, I see potential for high-quality graphene power tools being adopted by skilled trade professionals and the industrial construction industry.

Graphene Power Tools on the Market

Graphene power tool technology is still in the early phase of its development so it’s not commonly used. However, I mentioned CAT Power Tools has developed graphene batteries. These CAT GX5 18V 5.0Ah Graphene batteries are high-capacity batteries.

When compared to Lithium-Ion batteries CAT claims these batteries…

  • Have four times longer life
  • Charge three times quicker
  • Run twice as long before hitting thermal cutoff

CAT has released some new 18V power tools to pair with the GX5 batteries. Currently these 18V tools are the only tools compatible with the graphene battery. It will be interesting to see if CAT develops a graphene battery for the its higher volt tools and outdoor power equipment.

Right now, CAT is the only power tool manufacturer with a graphene battery. Now that the technology is out there I wonder if we’ll start to see more brands produce a similar battery.

Back to Guide

Wrap-up

Graphene clearly has a lot of potential in the power tool world. I’m excited to see CAT putting the technology to use, but will we see more of it? I think the biggest struggle with a new technology is just getting it out there. Once the product is finished it can be expanded and refined. CAT put this battery out last year. Will we see a new battery from Milwaukee? DeWALT? Metabo HPT?

Is this the beginning of an avalanche of new power tool technology?

COMMENT with your thoughts on this graphene battery technology. Do you think the industry will change? Do you think there is something better coming? Let us know what you think.

If you’ve read a few articles of ours then you may have seen us throw around the term “prosumer”. But what does that even mean? What is a “prosumer” and am I one? Are you one? Lucky for you, we’re going over this term and its impact in the tool world.

Prosumer Guide

What is a Prosumer?

We like the definition that a prosumer is “an amateur who purchases equipment with quality or features suitable for professional use.” For us, a prosumer isn’t someone who is going to grab whatever tool is on the shelf or on sale. No, a prosumer will weigh the options, study brands, and select a tool brand, and process carefully. A prosumer may not work in the skilled trades, but they approach their projects with the same level of professionalism as a full-time skilled trade professional.

A prosumer is a professional mindset but in the everyday consumer. They don’t take unnecessary shortcuts. If they are building something they want it to last, and the tools and methods they choose reflect this.

We believe that the majority of our readers and viewers are prosumers if not skilled trade professionals. This includes beginners who don’t own a tool, yet. Because you don’t have any experience, but care about the quality of your craftsmanship when the time comes.

Do you think you might be a prosumer? We put together a short list of qualities of a prosumer regardless of your age and experience.

Back to Guide

5 Qualities of a Prosumer

Here are five top qualities found in most prosumers. These qualities are the driving force behind advances in new tools and technology.

You Study Tools & Brands

As we mentioned earlier, a prosumer is not going to buy a tool simply because it’s cheap, on sale, or just exists. A prosumer takes time to research a brand or at least ask for recommendations from individuals they respect and trust.

Prosumers also study tools to make sure they are right for their projects. This looks like reading articles and reviews, going over each tool’s features, or getting recommendations.

You Research Before You Work

Especially if you’re trying something new, you pause and take time to read up on a project or watch videos from professionals. This can take a few minutes or it can take a few weeks. Either way, you don’t start until you feel confident about what you need to do to complete a project.

You Persevere Through Trial & Error

“Most projects require at least three trips to the hardware store.” This is a quote I’ve heard over and over again from my dad. You can’t know everything and not all (or any) projects go according to plan. However, prosumers generally don’t get defeated when things derail.

Not only do prosumers persevere through the trial and error process, but they sometimes enjoy it. They like the challenge of figuring out what went wrong and how to solve it.

You’re Proud of Your Projects

Prosumers are not only proud of their work, they stand by it, whether they fixed a leaky faucet or built a custom piece of furniture. Yeah, maybe making your own table saved you some money. But not necessarily because there wasn’t anything cheaper. But because your own handiwork built you a better quality table compared to one you could buy for a similar price.

You Enjoy Construction

Despite the frustrations, hammering your thumb, the hours spent, the sweat dripped, you enjoy these construction projects. You may say “never again” or that you’ll hire someone in the future. But when it comes down to it, you’re always eager to get back to building and fixing.

Do any of these sound like you? Congrats! You just may be a prosumer.

Top Prosumer Brands

Here are some top brands that cater to prosumers.

These brands and more professional quality tools while keeping them accessible to everyday consumers. Some brands definitely cost more than others which may influence which brands you go with. However, all of these tools are commonly used by skilled trade professionals, craftsmen and women, and professional DIY’ers.

Hilti has grown from a small, family-owned business in Switzerland to a global leader in trusted professional power tools and equipment. No, this wasn’t an overnight success. Hilti got here with products made with the end user in mind, built by engineers who anticipated and obsessed over the common problems faced by skilled trade professionals, and then solved them. The result is new Hilti power tools, equipment and technology that raises the standards for the construction industry, year after year.

This past October Hilti invited me to their Switzerland headquarters to see and experience their lineup of new 2024 Hilti power tools and equipment, specifically for the Hilti Nuron battery platform. Today I’m sharing these tools with you.

Guide

About Hilti Nuron

The tools in this release are part of the Hilti Nuron battery platform which launched in 2022. Hilti pretty much redesigned their tools from the ground up for this system. Of course better power and performance were a large part of this redesign, but smarter and safer tool technology were also huge priorities for the Nuron battery platform.

Hilti prides itself on its commitment to workers’ safety. In fact, Hilti believes that better safety contributes to a more sustainable workforce which leads to optimal productivity.

A lot of the products coming in 2024 exemplify those beliefs.

To learn more about Hilti Nuron battery platform you can read our TIA article: Hilti Nuron – The Game Has Changed.

NEW 2024 Hilti Power Tools

We counted 38 total new power tools and equipment coming in 2024. These products range from your everyday drills/drivers and impact wrenches to circular saws, concrete vibrators, the EXO-T-22 Tool Balancer, and more.

Our video includes all of the tools that we were able to learn about and interact with what at Hilti headquarters.

Top Tools

Again, there are a lot of exciting Hilti power tools coming out in 2024, and details about these tools are limited at this time. However, we will make sure to share everything we know about them as they come out. But today we’re sharing more details on our top two new Hilti tools.

EXO-T-22 Tool Balancer

The Tool Balancer is designed to relieve the physical load of carrying heavy power tools common in construction settings, especially industrial construction. Hilti gives this a support rating of 37 lbs. This can drastically reduce the weight of larger construction equipment. Pricing and release date are not yet available.

The EXO-T-22 Tool Balancer is a similar tool to the EXI-S Shoulder Exoskeleton, which you can read more about in our TIA Review.

SM 60-22 Cordless Miter Saw

Hilti didn’t want to compete with itself when designing this Nuron miter saw. They wanted to stand out against the whole market. Hilti claims this 12 in. miter saw can perform up to 50% more cuts on a single charge when compared to similar saws from other brands. This front-sliding miter saw gives you a four in. cut depth and a 14 in. cut width.

They also made this saw safer by moving the bevel adjuster to the front. So, no one has to stick their hand behind the saw to adjust it.

All 2024 Hilti Power Tools & Equipment

Our Thoughts on NEW Hilti 2024 Power Tools

First, I want to say thank you to Hilti for the invitation. It was great to learn about all these new tools and technology. I will never forget my trip to Switzerland. I’m was impressed and am excited by the new tools coming out in 2024.

Which new Hilti tools excite you the most and you’d like to see us test out?
