The Milwaukee M12 line offers a variety of different tools that cater to a wide variety of different building trades.  The M12 line is one of the largest 12V lines available on the market.  Today we are taking a look at the Milwaukee M12 Bandfile.

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile Overview

A bandfile is an extremely helpful tool for a variety of applications such as grinding, deburring, sanding surfaces, and finishing metal pipes, angle iron, fiberglass, and wood.  And Milwaukee being Milwaukee decided to up their game and offer two bandfiles as part of their cordless M12 line of tools.  So let’s take a look at some of the features.

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile Features

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile

The Milwaukee Bandfile (model #2483-20) is built around a brushless motor that drives a 3/8″ x 13″ belt. (There is also model #2482-20 which is a 1/2″ x 18″ option.)

As stated above, this is powered by Milwaukee’s popular M12 battery, which is inserted at the bottom of the handle (see below).

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile

The tool features an over-mold grip with a comfortable indentation for your hand.

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile

At the front of the handle, there is a variable speed trigger.  Plus you can lock the tool to the “ON” position.

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile

The tool features a two-speed selection for forward, and reverse.

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile

The compression stop pin is conveniently built into the tool. And speaking of convenience; you’ll also appreciate the “no tool required” belt changes.

The file will rotate 360°.  Just lift the lock lever and rotate the arm to any angle.

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile Performance

This tool can be used for a wide range of applications including but not limited to automotive, industrial, and metalworking.  We installed a headache rack on the back of Dan’s truck.  Some metal parts we had to retrofit so we had to cut some pieces.  The bandfile came in handy for us to round and smooth the different edges.

In regards to performance, this little bandfile is powerful and easy to work with.  Having the two speeds can be extremely helpful depending on the application.

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile Value

You can pick the Milwaukee Bandfile up at Home Depot for $$249.  If you are in the trades and need a bandfile, it’s worth the price as it will save time.  Plus you can now cut the cord, so no more extension cords or pneumatic hoses and you can get rid of that loud compressor.

Milwaukee M12 Bandfile Wrap Up

In the end, this is a great investment and another helpful addition to the Milwaukee M12 lineup.  I know a bandfile isn’t a sexy tool to talk about but for those who need one, it sure helps out a lot.  And the idea that you get pneumatic performance in a cordless tool says a lot.

When it comes to electrical supplies and tools, Southwire is leading the pack.  They develop innovations to help the contractor make their life easier and safer all while trying to save money for the end user.  This brings me to one of those inventions that make you turn your head and think, why didn’t I think of that?  The Southwire SIMpull CoilPAK is an ingenious way to save money, time, stress, and your body. When it comes to innovation in the electrical world, leave it to Southwire, the leaders.

Southwire SIMpull CoilPAK – Information

So what is Southwire SIMpull CoilPAK?  Instead of the large spools that fall over, are hard to store, and hard to move around, SIMpull CoilPAKs are smaller, easier, safer, and just a better way to pull wire.  You can read more about the system at Southwire because they have so many solutions for this concept.

The CoilPAK Wire Payoff and CoilPAK Mini are great solutions for new construction and service trucks.

With new construction, the SIMpull CoilPAK Wire Payoff offers a NoLube wire jacket, the wire is fully encased so the wire is protected, the packaging has built-in handles, you can pull directly from the package without tools or equipment and they come in single, 2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire solutions.  So this innovation reduces pulling weight since you are only pulling the weight of the wire.  The NoLube wire jacket assists and reduces the pulling tension.  Another benefit is it’s easy to set up and move around compared to wire wagons, plus no broken or spool over-turns.  In the end, you save time and reduce injuries.

The Southwire SIMpull CoilPAK Minis are great for service trucks.  No more taking up space and no more long setups when you get to the job.  Just grab a mini, go to the desired location, and start working right away.

While there are a lot of features that make this product unique, one of my favorites is you can get multiple wires in a single pack.  Let’s say you have to pull wire and it’s far away from your truck.  Instead of taking multiple spools to the location, they have different packs that have multiple wires together.  So you grab a single pack and you can pull multiple lines at once.  How nice is that?  Think of all the different times that this would come in handy; saving time, money, and your body.

Southwire SIMpull CoilPAK – Benefits

While the SIMpull CoilPAKs have a lot of benefits, here are some that I wanted to touch on.

  • Smart packaging so they are easy to store and transport
  • No more broken spools or spools that overturn
  • The SIMpull pulls two times easier than your standard spools
  • They come in a multi-wire system so you can take one SIMpull to a location to get the job done instead of multiple spools
  • Stationary package design requires less pulling effort
  • Reduces lifting, handling, and pulling injuries.

Southwire SIMpull CoilPAK – In Use

Here is what a three-wire CoilPAK looks like.  As you can see, it has a heavy-duty outside container that holds the wire in place.  No more bringing in heavy reels for a job.  When it’s time to pull the wire, it easily comes out of the packaging.

Also, they are stackable which is great for transporting or while storing on a job.

Southwire SIMpull CoilPAK – Wrap Up

SIMpull CoilPAK is a great idea and a great product.  These packs help save space, time, frustration, and reduce jobsite fatigue. Innovation like this is just another reason Southwire is a leading supplier to professional electricians and contractors.  They truly create products that are better for the contractor and installer.

Southwire is also one of the most generous companies I know of. Click here to learn about all of their charitable giving programs. And once you dig deeper into Southwire you really see who Southwire is as a company. You understand why they are the best of the best, and see how other companies could learn from them; and not just companies in the electrical industry.  They do so much for this country and help support different programs all around.

Hilti is known for a lot of things, and innovation is definitely one of them.  Today we are going to talk about the Hilti EXO-S shoulder exoskeleton which brings next-level innovation to the job site.  A job site can be demanding, especially when you are working in awkward positions for long periods of time.  Take working overhead such as installing drywall, painting ceilings, installing pipe, drop ceilings, and a whole host of other tasks.  Over long periods of time, our arms, shoulders, and bodies get tired.  When we are tired, our work production goes down and the injury rate goes up. The Hilti EXO-S shoulder exoskeleton helps with that problem.

Hilti EXO-S Overview

Hilti designed a “passive”  shoulder exoskeleton called the EXO-S which assists with tasks requiring working overhead.  What this system does is help provide support and keep you in proper alignment as you work. The EXO-S is designed to be lightweight, easy to take on and off, and provide a natural movement experience, all while aiding the worker so they are less fatigued, which then leads to better work and fewer injuries.

Hilti EXO-S Features

Hilti EXO-S

The Hilti EXO-S is lightweight and only weighs about 5 lbs.

As the user lifts their arms or has their arms overhead, the EXO-S helps reduce the weight.  The side cover also helps protect parts of the system.

Hilti EXO-S

As you can see there is a ball pivot joint to help aid in the natural movement.  This also makes the movement extremely smooth.

There are so many ways to easily adjust the EXO-S so it is a comfortable fit for the user.  So if you are smaller or larger, it doesn’t matter as you can get a comfortable fit.

The waistband and shoulder straps also offer padding to make it comfortable, even for long days.

Hilti EXO-S Performance

Performance is something we really can not show but take our word for it, the HIlti EXO-S does a great job of making overhead work easier and less stressful on you and your body.  The arms assist you and truly make working above much easier.  Best of all, it’s easy to adjust the size and even easier to put on and take off.

Setting up the system to give the user a great fit is easy.  Plus best of all, this actually assists the worker and doesn’t get in the way when working.  What I mean by getting in the way, is there is nothing really hanging off to get caught on anything and it’s not bulky, making it harder to work in tight spaces.

We found this system to be lightweight and we were amazed at the natural movement.  As we moved in any direction, the EXO-S assisted us.

Hilti EXO-S Value

The Hilti EXO-S retails for $1,399. So is this a lot of money?  Personally, I think this is a bargain.  Yes, $1,399 is a big upfront cost especially if you need multiple units for your crew.  However in the long run I think you get two things.  The first is safety.  When you are not as tired, accidents tend to not happen as much.  Plus you don’t get long-term injuries from muscle and joint fatigue.  Second is increased productivity. If someone isn’t as tired, they can get more work done.  Not only is more work getting done, but you are getting a better quality of work.  So in the end, I can easily justify the upfront cost and think this is a great deal.

Hilti EXO-S Wrap Up

Leave it to Hilti to find an innovative way to protect the worker.  Hilti is always thinking about different ways to keep the job site safer and more efficient.  With the Hilti EXO-S, I think they created a unique solution for a challenge that is as old as the job site; make the job site as safe and productive as possible.

Southwire is one of my favorite companies.  While there is a lot to love about them, including they are a family-owned company right here in the USA. There are even more things that stand out to me. Definitely that Southwire produces quality products. And I really respect what they do for their electricians’ community. And of course their philanthropy in the USA.  But today I want to talk about something that isn’t as sexy but something we all have experience with, extension cords. So before we jump into the features of a specific Southwire Extension Cord, let’s talk extension cords in general.

Southwire Extension Cord Overview

When it comes to extension cords, I always want the best.  I have had too many experiences dealing with crappy cords.  The ends break, the sheathing is thin, it is too stiff to deal with when it’s cold; my list goes on and on.

Well, I think I found the perfect cords and wanted to share them with you. The Southwire Polar/Solar cords.  Right from the start you can tell when Southwire made these cords they didn’t cut corners.

Southwire Extension Cord Features

Southwire has a variety of Polar/Solar cords available; you can check out the Southwire Cords here. But the model I am going to focus on here is the Polar/Solar 1787SW0002 10/3 Extra Heavy-Duty 15-Amp SJEOOW 25′ Cold Weather Extension Cord.

In general, this extension cord has a lot of features to love. My favorite is it is manufactured right here in the United States of America. And here are some specific features:

  • The cord is rated for -58F to 221F, which is a wide temperature range.
  • It is a 15 Amps, 125 Volts, and 1875 Watts cord.
  • It is UL listed, which is a safety must-have.

Southwire Extension Cord

The yellow jacket makes this easy to see so it helps avoid trip hazards and makes it easy to find.  The cord is well insulated and the sheathing is abrasion, chemical, and oil resistant.

I am not sure how to adequately describe the construction and feel of the connector/receptacle ends, but they are not cheaply made. Based on my initial impression, these will be intact and in good working order for years to come. No matter how many times we unplug it by pulling on the cord instead of the actual clear molded end.

Southwire Extension Cord

One cool feature is the receptacle end will light up so you know if you have power.  No more wondering if it’s the tool, the cord itself, or if it came unplugged.

Southwire Extension Cord Performance

In a perfect world, nothing will happen to your extension cord.  However, we don’t live in a perfect world.  We live in a world where people will step on, roll things over, and even drive over extension cords.  So when it comes down to it, you want something that can take the abuse.

The sheathing on these cords is not only flexible and resistant to outside elements, but it seems thick enough to withstand a wide variety of different types of abuse.

Southwire Extension Cord

Again, I am not recommending this and I am sure Southwire doesn’t recommend this but when I roll up my cords, I always put an end through the loop so I can carry the cord by the end.  I know it puts stress on the end of the cord, but this is one of those tough cords, and I’m confident it can handle it.

One of our latest snowfalls in the Chicago area gave us the opportunity to show you how Southwire Polar/Solar extension cords perform in the cold.  I know this one is a different gauge but it is still a Southwire Polar/Solar cord.  Dan plugged in his diesel truck overnight and even after sitting out all night, the cord was still flexible and easy to work with.

Watch us test Southwire Polar/Solar Extension Cord

Southwire Extension Cord Value

The Polar/Solar 1787SW0002 10/3 Extra Heavy-Duty 15-Amp SJEOOW 25′ Cold Weather Extension Cord retails for $59.45 on Amazon.  Yes, you can get cheaper power cords but nothing like this one. You will not find a better extension cord for under $60. This cord is tough, built to high standards, offers features others don’t and stays flexible in even cold weather.

The Stud-Master is the debut product from Talon Tools, a family-owned, US-based tool manufacturer that wants to simplify construction. Created by homebuilders for fellow homebuilders and professional carpenters. The Stud-Master 16 and 24 are designed to speed up framing while improving accuracy. This tool is available in two sizes and was made to quickly and reliably space studs 16 in. or 24 in. apart while securing them into place.

Watch what happened when we paired the Stud-Master 16 with the MAX SuperFramer.

Stud-Master 16  – Information

The Stud-Master comes in two sizes, 16 in. or 24 in. Today, we are working with The Stud-Master 16. This tool is a simple one-piece, solid high-grade aluminum construction. It is fairly large at 19.45 in. x 6.3 in. x 2.24 inches, but weighs under two pounds. It’s lightweight enough to carry around to jobsites but big enough to stand out in a pile of tools.

The Stud-Master 16 is available for sale on Talon Tools website for $89.99. Talon Tools also offers a no-credit-impact payment plan of $22.49 every two weeks for a total of four payments. Also available at Amazon.

Stud-Master 16 Features

As mentioned, The Stud-Master 16 and 24 have a simple design that consists of one metal piece with three slots for studs. These slots are designed to hold 2 in. x 4 in. studs securely in place for framing. On The Stud-Master 16, center-to-center of the outer slots measures precisely 16 inches.

On the bottom of the long edge is the third slot used to position The Stud-Master along the base stud.

There is also a long handle. Which makes this lightweight tool very easy to move, position, and carry around.

Stud-Master 16 – Impressions

At first impression, The Stud-Master 16 has a simple, straightforward design. It does not have multiple pieces that need to be put together, inevitably get lost or additional joints or levers that can degrade over time.

This one-piece tool just slides right into position. Even though The Stud-Master 16 weighs less than two pounds, it is still a very sturdy piece of high-grade aluminum. This tool should last you a while, possibly a lifetime.

We went ahead and tested The Stud-Master 16. It worked perfectly. It held the studs securely in place while we nailed them to the frame. We measured afterward and it was a perfect, 16 in. on-center spacing. This tool could definitely speed up framing when you don’t need to stop and measure repeatedly.

Some people are turned off by a one-use tool. While we did not test additional applications, Talon Tools reports that The Stud-Master 16 and 24 can also be used to align and secure floor trusses, and are durable enough to fix a twisted stud.

Stud-Master 16 Wrap Up

When it comes to single-use tools there is a big question of “is it worth it?” Yes, The Stud-Master 16 and 24 were designed with a very specific use and user in mind. However, they would be very beneficial to a lot of people.

For Professionals

Carpenters and home builders have the most to benefit from The Stud-Master because it can speed up the framing process while ensuring it’s done accurately. Faster construction means you can get more done in a day, possibly take on more projects, and can reduce labor costs. Combine faster framing with less errors, that is money saved from expenses occurred from mistakes (materials, reconstruction costs). The Stud-Master 16 and 24 are also great tools for new employees and apprentices.

For Recreational DIYers

Similarly, The Stud-Master is a great tool for DIY projects, especially for beginners. Some may think The Stud-Master is an expensive tool for a one-project use. However, framing projects require accuracy to be safe. And again, redoing a framing project can cost a lot in both time and money.

Also, DIYers often do construction projects in their spare time. Knowing you can do a project faster, say, before the weekend is over, is a huge benefit to anyone that would like to stop doing projects in their spare time, and get back to spending it with family and friends.

Final Thoughts

In the end, The Stud-Master 16 and 24 are great tools for simplifying framing whether you are a professional or a weekend DIYer. It’s a simple, easy-to-use tool that will improve construction times and reduce or even remove errors regardless of your framing experience level.

Tool in Action

We saw a lot of cool new and exciting products at the 2023 National Hardware show in Las Vegas.  While there were a lot of companies that stood out, MULE had a cool twist on a common tool we see and use all the time, the utility dolly.  And while we were at their booth, there was something else that caught our eye, a garage fan.  So let’s jump in and talk about the MULE Mobile Workshop and the MULE Garage Fan.

MULE – Overview

MULE might not be a name you are familiar with but they have been creating and developing products for the home hardware and ceiling fan industry for over 25 years.

Today we are focusing on two of their products, the MULE Mobile Workshop and the MULE Garage Fan.  The MULE Mobile Workshop puts a twist on the utility dolly as it offers more features than the traditional dolly such as electricity and other accessories, and even a fan.

The MULE Garage Fan is also a cool product.  When I am in the garage, I like to have some air movement instead of stale air.  However, I really don’t want to pay for an electrician to come and wire up a fan for me.  This fan is plug-and-play and easy to use.

MULE – Mobile Workshop

The MULE Mobile Workshop is something I have never seen before.  This is a utility dolly that includes a wide variety of accessories that you tend to use when working.

Need to lift and transport something heavy? No worries. The foldable loading tray can haul a wide variety of items up to 200 lbs.

Another extremely cool and helpful feature is the integrated power strip. It has three 110v 3-prong outlets and two USB ports.  How many times are you looking for extra outlets?  Now you can have easy access to multiple outlets right at your work area.

The built-in 14″ fan is literally a “really cool feature”.  Who doesn’t need a little air movement when working? On high, this fan produces 1974 CFM.

Work lights are often a must.  The built-in light puts out 1500 lumens to help light up your work area.

Mule Mobile Workshop

The 8″ no flat wheels are large enough so when you are rolling it around, small pebbles, curbs, etc., won’t keep you from transporting your tools and accessories to where you need them.

The MULE Mobile Workshop is designed with a molded tray affixed to the handle. This tray has flat surfaces as well as receptacles and holes to put and/or hang things in, keeping tools and other small items easily accessible.  Additional accessories like two styles of cup holders and a phone holder are also available.

You can check more out on their MULE Mobile Workshop.

MULE – Garage Fan

If you are like me and want some air movement, this is the perfect fan.  What I like best about this fan, besides the 3300 CFM is how easy it is to install plus it uses a three-prong cord so no extra wiring.  This is a ceiling-mounted fan so it doesn’t take up any floor or counter space. You can just grab the large handle on the bottom and swivel the fan 360° pointing it in any direction you’d like to get air movement where you want it.

Along with the above, the fan also has the following features:

  • Size – 18″
  • Motor – 3-speed AC Motor
  • Cord Length – 96″
  • Downrod – 6″ and 12″, which both are included
  • Control  – on/off, and low, medium, high, controlled with one knob
  • Retail Price – $199

Installing the fan is extremely easy, with just a couple of screws.  Once you have the fan installed, you lift up on the cover to hide the hardware and then plug the fan in and you are all set to go.

If you have a high ceiling, no worries.  The included remote will allow you to adjust the speed.

You can check more out on the MULE Garage Fan.

MULE – The Wrap

MULE used their industry experience and knowledge to develop two unique, problem-solving products.  The MULE Mobile Workshop is a utility dolly unlike any other we’ve seen. It has so many convenient features and helps you transport everything you need to your work areas. And with its long list of integrated accessories, it could definitely save a lot of time, money, and headaches.  The garage fan is an easy-to-install and easy-to-use, space-saving fan.  Can’t really ask for more than that. We were impressed with both of these MULE products that will be available sometime in Summer 2023.

Milwaukee Tool has long been regarded as one of the best makers of hand tools, power tools, and workspace equipment. But what about their coolers? The latest Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler is a second attempt by Milwaukee to stand out in an area that you probably don’t first consider them: coolers. There are plenty of brands out there that specialize in quality coolers. However, Milwaukee products are made for the job site and the work crew. Let’s take a look at the new Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler and what it provides as a specialty cooler.

Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler Overview

The Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler (Model #48-22-8462) is a 40 qt. cooler made for the Milwaukee PACKOUT storage system. If you don’t already know, this is Milwaukee’s modular storage system for tools and job site accessories. This is the second cooler made by Milwaukee. In 2020, Milwaukee came out with another Milwaukee PACKOUT Cooler, a 16 qt. cooler and the first cooler made for the Milwaukee PACKOUT system. The Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler more than doubles the size of the previous model, same durability, and has some new features that make it great for work with a large crew.

Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler Features

The Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler’s exterior is made from an impact-resistant polymer. It’s a very hard shell and has an IP65 protection rating. Drop it, leave it out during a storm, toss a wrench at it, or even launch it into a lake. This cooler will hold its shape and its seal. So it is perfect for taking to job sites.

It’s well insulated with claims that it can keep ice cold for up to five days. This is a large cooler with dimensions of 16.93 in. x 16.14 in. x 22.17 in. There is tons of room for holding drinks, lunches, and more…

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

The large metal latches have a very secure hold when locked into place. You don’t need to worry about the top coming open or off when it’s bouncing around in the back of your truck.

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

Equipped with a bottle opener on the front. You might now be considering taking this cooler with you on your next vacation or tailgate.

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

The metal reinforcements on each corner help keep the Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler sturdy and also make it easy to grab and drag.

The 2 in. fold-away handles have rubberized, non-slip grips. When down the handles rest under the lid to keep the cooler compact for storing and moving.

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

The drain plug on the left side makes it easy to empty out melted ice and secure enough to keep water contained when needed.

Again, this is part of the Milwaukee PACKOUT storage system where each modular component fits and locks into place. Aside from the white lid, the Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler looks close to the 22 in. Milwaukee PACKOUT XL tool box. Just like the 22 in. tool box, the cooler has the same full base size. It sits well on top of the PACKOUT Rolling Tool Box. The original, smaller 16 qt. Milwaukee PACKOUT Cooler width is half of that.

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

Open the cooler for a few more items. Similar to the 16 qt. model, there is a dry storage bin. It’s obviously bigger than in the smaller model and covers half the width of the cooler interior.

One of my favorite new additions is the cutting board divider. It fits nicely within the cooler and to the side of the dry storage bin. So, both fit in the cooler at the same time. Obviously, the cutting board can be removed if you prefer to put lunch together on the job or at a potluck.

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

The dry storage bin is easily removable and washable.

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

The actual internal storage space depth is 12 in. An ample size cooler to be filled with food, drinks, ice, or whatever you need.

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

The rubber seal on the lid of the Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler keeps the air out and the cold in. The seal is secure when closed.

Milwaukee Packout XL Cooler

The cooler has a smooth open/close with added durability from the metal rod secured hinges.

Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler Performance

We tested the Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler out. We could easily fit your average-sized water bottles and soda cans while still having plenty of room for the dry storage bin to fit. It’s nice how between the dry storage bin and cutting board divider you have three separate compartments. Even though this is intended to be a worksite cooler, the cutting board, bottle opener, durability, and ability to keep ice cold for five days make it versatile enough for camping, potlucks, family get-togethers, and more.

Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler Value

Milwaukee Tool proves they can do more than the traditional tools and equipment they are known for. But is it worth it? There is no question that the Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler is more expensive than some of the other coolers available. However, when compared to other models of similar size and durability, the Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler maintains a competitive price while offering additional features. The Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler (Model #48-22-8462) is available at The Home Depot.

ORCA offers a durable 40 qt. cooler, but at a much higher price. TUNES2GO has wheels and a built-in Bluetooth PA system but doesn’t match the Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler in terms of jobsite durability.

The lack of wheels on the Milwaukee PACKOUT XL can be criticized, but again, this cooler is part of the Milwaukee PACKOUT storage system. Most people who invest in the PACKOUT storage system already have the Milwaukee PACKOUT Rolling Tool Box or 20 in. 2-Wheel Utility Cart. At a minimum, this is a great addition to anyone already invested in the Milwaukee PACKOUT storage system.

Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler Wrap Up

So, Milwaukee Tool has done it again. They introduced a new product, one that most people don’t commonly associate with them, and I think they knocked it out of the park. The Milwaukee PACKOUT XL Cooler is impact-resistant, keeps ice cold a whole work week, is large, and has multiple compartments and functionality. As I mentioned above, this is a great addition to anyone invested in and loves the Milwaukee PACKOUT storage system, whether you are a construction worker with a large crew, or the handyman taking the family camping for the weekend.

The Rhino Pull 1000 Portable Electric Winch by Mile Marker, is a great new addition to their large lineup of products. The most critical metric of a winch is how much it can pull.  The Mile Marker Rhino Portable Winch can handle up to 1,000 lbs. What is unique about this winch is that it is battery-powered.  So even if you need the assistance of a winch in place with no power source, no worries, you can still have up to 1,000 lbs of pulling and lifting power.  So let’s jump in and take a closer look.

Mile Marker Rhino Portable Winch Overview

Weighing in at 16.8 lbs, the Mile Marker Rhino Portable Winch certainly gets some points for portability. The bright orange coloring is appreciated since portability often translates to outdoor use.  Though a winch is a bit harder to lose than a pen, anything that stands out against the typical green-beige-brown background of nature is appreciated.  Another point for the Mile Marker Rhino Winch is its relatively compact design.  Taking up only 24” X 10” X 10.5”, this piece of equipment won’t take up much space while giving the operator plenty of peace of mind that this equipment can, literally, get them out of a hole.

Mile Marker Rhino Portable Winch Features

Looking at it all around, you can see that the Mile Marker Portable Rhino Winch is a compact piece of equipment.  During its pulling and lifting, the winch offers variable-speed operations and an easy-to-read display panel. The display shows all the codes that are important during operation. The codes correspond to warnings about limits of operations (motor overheating, weight capacity limit, and so on).  The winch comes with an excellent user manual that describes charging, battery installation, the aforementioned warning codes, and operation details.

There are safety hooks on each end. One to anchor the winch, and one to connect to your load.  The hooks are heavy-duty solid metal with spring-loaded safe locks.

The device is powered by a 2Ah Li-Ion rechargeable battery. The compatible battery charger is part of the total purchase.

Mile Marker Rhino Winch

I like that Mile Marker gave some thought to the ergonomics of winch operations.  Here you can appreciate the large (but not too thick) soft-rubber handle that makes it easy on the hands when carrying the winch around.  The solid material and design go well with the “portability” theme.

Mile Marker Rhino Winch

Another close-up of the handle and associated controls.  The aqua-blue direction switch indicates very clearly which way the rope will operate if pressed and engaged in that mode.  Lastly, the variable-speed switch or “trigger” provides vital control of the winch speed. And IMO, variable speed is a key feature on any winch.

Mile Marker Rhino Winch

There is an easy-access toggle switch to turn the winch on and off.

Here we see another closeup shot of the winch control buttons.  And notice the round stopping plate to make sure that the synthetic rope and hook aren’t pulled in too far.  As the black metal plate hits the red button, the unit will automatically stop.

Our view of the control panel shows it displays important information during operation like rope direction, and remaining battery charge.  You will also note the spring on the distal end of the stopping plate.  The extra flexibility and softer “landing” provided by the spring as the hook approaches the winch is a smart add-on.

Mile Marker Rhino Winch

The display screen is up close and personal.  Something I note that you may like is the bright contrast.  How often has it happened that your phone or other device is simply too dim to read clearly?  Here you see it clearly when in direct sunlight; pretty good.  Considering that the codes can convey important information and warnings, a high-contrast display panel goes a long way.

Mile Marker Rhino Winch

The main load-bearing part of the hook and its attachment to the synthetic rope is solid.  So you can feel safe pulling or lifting a heavy load.

Mile Marker Rhino Winch

The winch is equipt with 39′ of synthetic rope controlled by four rollers.

The included remote control is wireless (up to 50 ft), but also connects as a corded remote in case the battery runs out during use. The remote is a convenient add-on that gives the operator an extra degree of control and safety.  This isn’t just a luxury.  If a winch is pulling a potentially hazardous or hard-to-control load at an odd angle, you will appreciate the margin of safety and distance this feature affords.  Using the remote control is straightforward with large buttons and easy-to-read text.

Mile Marker Rhino Portable Winch Performance

While we used this on a wide range of applications, the two I want to talk about are the tree limb and the conveyor belt.

I have no idea how much this tree limb weighed but we were able to move the limb onto the trailer and then back off.  It was easy to hook the winch to our chain and move the limb.

This is a big tub grinder used to grind limbs, branches, and trees to mulch.  The mulch is then moved by the conveyor belt.  On this day something happened and the belt broke.  So they used the Mile Marker Rhino Portable Winch to pull the conveyor belt back through the machine.  Normally they have to use a front loader. But instead, they just hooked up the winch which was a much more efficient remedy.

Mile Marker Rhino Portable Winch Value

For a total price of $399.99 on the Mile Marker website, the PN 71-1000 winch model is a great value, and it comes with a 1-year limited warranty.  You get portability and reliability which both are extremely important in a winch.  Plus you get the wireless remote control, a significant safety feature in my book.

Mile Marker Rhino Portable Winch Wrap Up

The bottom line, the Mile Marker Rhino Pull 1000 Portable Winch is a great winch for those who want power, reliability, and ease of operation.  Plus being a truly portable solution, well that just makes it a really great winch.

We always talk about tools and how important they are.  However, today we are going to talk about the forgotten star of the show, the coffee mug or better known as the Tumbler.  Milwaukee has added two new tumblers to their lineup.  So let’s take a look at the Milwaukee Tumblers.

Milwaukee Tumblers Overview

I live and die by my coffee, tea, and water.  I live in Chicago and besides crime, high taxes, and corruption, we are known for having extreme weather conditions.  Our summers can easily get up to 95 degrees and our winters can get well below zero.  So people like me need a good way to keep their beverages cold and hot.

Milwaukee Tumblers Features

Milwaukee Tumblers

The Milwaukee tumblers come in both a 30 oz. and a 20 oz.  Both of the Tumblers are dishwasher safe.

The lids are easy to open and close and offer smooth operation, which is a nice deviation from other lids we have seen with other tumblers. The sliding magnetic lid seals tight, and opens and closes easily, even with gloves.

The inside of the tumbler is stainless steel and the walls are double insulated.

Milwaukee Tumblers

The outside has a good texture and isn’t too smooth which allows you to hold the tumbler better, even with gloves.

This is part of the Milwaukee Packout System so these mugs will operate with any of your Packout boxes.

Milwaukee Tumblers Value

You can pick the 30 oz up for $35 while the 20 oz will run about $30.  The prices are in line with YETI Tumblers so not too bad.  However, these give you the cool look of Milwaukee branding, plus they are compatible with Milwaukee Packout which makes these very unique.

They are priced a little higher than RTIC but again, not by much and RTIC doesn’t have the Packout features.  So for me, these are reasonably priced and a good value.

Milwaukee Tumblers Thoughts

In the end, if my coffee is kept hot and my tea cold, I’m pretty satisfied. While some of the reviews say these can leak from the top, I haven’t found many that don’t leak when turned upside down.  I like the lid design and how easy it is to close and open.  For me, I just want my lid closed when I am driving down a bumpy road so it’s not spilling, or when there is a lot of debris in the air.  Plus, there aren’t too many times I have it closed and tilt it upside down.

I am sure you have heard of SharkBite push-to-connect fittings for plumbing applications, as they’ve been around for a while.  But if not, a SharkBite is a creative way to connect two pieces of pipe (PEX, copper, CPVC, PE-RT, or HDPE) without soldering, clamps, unions, or glue. Today, we are looking at the next level of push-to-connect fittings for electricians, the Southwire SIMpush. The SIMpush is a creative way to attach RMC, IMC, GRC, ARC, and rigid stainless-steel conduit (threaded and non-threaded).

SIMpush Overview

SIMpush takes the set screw out of the equation.  The two pipes just slide into the SIMpush and you are all set to go.  This means quicker installation time and a money saver in the long run.

No longer do you need any tools or adhesives to install pipe, which is pretty cool.  You really can not install pipe faster than you can with SIMpush.

SIMpush Features

While SIMpush has a lot of different products, here is an example of a coupling and what it looks like.

SIMpush

Just insert the pipe into the coupling and it will provide up to 300+ ft/lbs of pull force resistance.

SIMpush

Above are the common couplings for a right angle, straight run, and to a box.

Here is an example of the conventional way to connect pipe, and the new way with SIMpush.

Want to make a right angle, no problem, just push the two pipes together and you are set for your right angle.

One cool feature is if you need to take off a coupling, just use the provided tool and you can release the pipe and reuse the coupling.

SIMpush Performance

When it comes to working with SIMpush, it really can’t be easier.  Just push the pipe in the coupler and your set.  No more grabbing for a screwdriver or any other tools.  The name says it all, SIMpush.  Simply push it into place.

Our Thoughts on SIMpush

For me, this is a very innovative way to save time and money, especially when working bigger jobs. Here are some of the features of SIMpush:

  • Housing made of corrosion-resistant copper-free aluminum
  • Quick-release ring which means you can easily take the coupling off
  • The gasket provides IP66 watertight seal
  • Maintains ground
  • Zinc-plated steel grip rings hold 300+ ft/lbs of pull force
  • Covered in a NEMA 4X powder coating making it ready for direct burial and is corrosion resistant

The bottom line, this is a great product.  It offers a time-saving way to connect pipe, which means money savings.  The SIMpush is easy to use and can be used in a variety of different applications and environments. And you’ll never have to thread conduit again.

If you want to buy SIMpushCheck out SIMpush on Amazon

When it comes to concrete, Hilti is the leader in the power tool world.  In fact, the new 22V Nuron platform makes them stand out above everyone else that much more.  If you are not familiar with Nuron and why it is groundbreaking, check out the Hilti Nuron Article.  Today I am going over one of my favorite releases, the Hilti Cordless Cut-Off Saw which is part of the Hilti 22V Nuron platform.

Hilti Cordless Cut-Off Saw Overview

I don’t remember what year this happened but I do remember being at the World of Concrete and attending a Hilti media event.  One of their stated goals was for them to go to a completely cordless job site.  At the time, I thought it was a pretty lofty challenge because they have such high-demand tools for concrete and other applications.  However, I had no doubt they would meet their goal, and now they have with the Nuron 22V platform.

Now Hilti isn’t the first with a cordless cut-off saw.  Milwaukee, Dewalt, and Husqvarna all have theirs on the market.  However, the others are more like child’s play having only a 9″ blade.  The Hilti has a 12″ blade which in my opinion means more work getting done.  So let’s jump in and learn a little bit about this saw and the features it offers.

Hilti Cordless Cut-Off Saw Features

The Hilti Cut-Off Saw is designed for concrete, brick, asphalt, steel, and more.  The saw is 26″ x 11.4″ x 13.8″ and weighs 19.6 lbs.

This saw offers the same workload as a 60cc gas cut-off saw.  Also, the batteries (B 22-170) will offer as much work as one full tank of gas.

The saw is powered by two Hilti Nuron batteries which sit on the back of the tool.

Hilti Cordless Cut Off Saw

The Hilti utilizes a 12″ blade system.

Hilti Cordless Cut Off Saw

The handle is extremely comfortable and is similar to a traditional cut-off saw.

Hilti Cordless Cut Off Saw

On the top of the handle is the safety switch and below the handle is the trigger.

Hilti Cordless Cut Off Saw

On the side is where you can attach a hose line or other dust management systems.  I like how the hose attaches from the back which makes it easy to work with.

Hilti Cordless Cut-Off Saw Performance

When it comes to dust management, this saw is awesome.  I made some trench cuts into a concrete floor.  While Hilti has a dedicated tank for dust management, I just connected this saw to my water hose.  The dust was kept to a minimum and was extremely efficient.

So now on to the performance.  I have used some of the other cordless cut-off saws on the market but nothing compared to the Hilti Cordless Cut-Off Saw.  This saw is easily the best performer in the marketplace hands down.

I used the biggest Hilti Nuron batteries and it only took three charges to make all the cuts, which was surprising to me. I thought it would take at least five to seven battery cycles to make these cuts over a 30′ span.  And I was never waiting around for batteries to charge.  By the time the batteries were drained from the saw, the other batteries were ready to go to work.  Just make sure you have multiple chargers and you will be fine.

Hilti Cordless Cut-Off Saw Value

The saw runs about $1,050 for a bare tool.  They have fleet management so you can get even better deals.  Either way, this saw is worth every penny.  To lose the loud noise of gas, the smell, and the hassles is a no-brainer.  Since this saw can outwork any other battery system, there isn’t any downtime.  This saw is a great price for those in the concrete world who would use it every day.

Hilti Cordless Cut-Off Saw Wrap Up

Bottom line, the Hilti Cordless Cut-Off Saw DSH 600-22 is easily the best cordless cut-off saw on the market in regards to power, run time, and quality.  This is just another example of why Hilti is the leader in the power tool world and why professionals around the world trust this brand.

There are only a few things in this world where the “form follows function” rule applies more than it does for coolers. My spouse would say I am a cooler hoarder. But the right cooler for the occasion is so important. How much do you need to carry? How long/far do have to carry it? How long do you need the ice to last? So when we received the long-awaited and much anticipated RIDGID Cold Box Cooler my thoughts immediately went to when and what would I use this RIDGID cooler for? Find out below if we think it is worth adding to your collection.

RIDGID Cooler Overview

RIDGID says “Since the day we invented the modern pipe wrench, we’ve made it our mission to build for the world’s expert tradespeople…” I think this cooler is intended for those “tradespeople”. This RIDGID cooler does not have a telescoping handle and/or integrated wheels. It is designed to be part of RIDGID’s Pro Tool Storage System and can be connected to one of the system’s many rolling boxes. It is around twice the size of the usual construction lunch box: RIDGID Cold Box Cooler @ 27 qt. vs. DeWALT Insulated Lunch Box @ 10 qt. and Milwaukee’s PACKOUT Compact Cooler @ 16 qt., to name a few. I personally think the DeWALT and Milwaukee lunch boxes are too small to fit enough food, drink, and ice for a long hot day on the job, so I do like this size. But this cooler by itself, full of ice and drinks & food would be very heavy to carry from the top handle for very far. So I don’t know that it would be considered a good “replacement” for your family’s big, rolling, camping/tailgating/boating cooler, but it makes for a great lunch box.

RIDGID Cooler Features

Ridgid Cooler

The RIDGID Cooler (model 249843) has a molded construction of high-impact resin. RIDGID specs the cooler’s outer dimensions at 25.04″ x 14.57″ x 12.44″.

Ridgid Cooler

Built to keep your stuff cold, clean, and safe. The RIDGID Cooler has thick, insulated walls.  The 1.75″ rim marries to the lid’s rubber gasket to create a water-tight, dust-proof seal, and the cooler is lockable.

Ridgid Cooler

RIGID claims 48 hours of ice retention. So I put 14 lbs. of ice in ours, only opened the lid once a day, and it took about four days for the ice to completely melt.

Ridgid Cooler

I measured the 27 qt. inside cavity to be roughly 19″ x 10″ x 8.5″. RIGID says it will hold 42 cans. I was able to fit in 27 of these 16.9 oz. water bottles standing up.

The RIDGID cooler construction has a heavy-duty feel and it weighs in at just over 10 lbs. The front latches and latch hinges are solid molded resin. The metal and resin rear lid hinges are pictured above.

The RIDGID Cooler has a large top handle that folds away. It could also be carried by the  RIDGID’s Pro Tool Storage System handles on the sides (pictured below). Another feature that I would use fairly often is the two hooked grooves at the bottom of each side to bungee or strap it down.

Ridgid Cooler

Pictured here are the rubber-over-metal RIDGID Pro Tool Storage System handles and the two shallow cup holders molded into the top of the lid.

The bottom is designed with four molded resin feet.

RIDGID Cooler Value

I did a quick search on Amazon for “Roto-Molded Ice Cooler” and it was hard to find one under $150. So for $79.97 at The Home Depot, it is one of the most affordable coolers of its kind. And costs less than most of the similarly constructed, but much smaller “lunch box” coolers on the market. So even if you are not invested in the RIDGID Pro Tool Storage System this RIDGID Cooler is still a good value.

RIDGID Cooler Wrap Up

I like the size, feel, and features of this RIDGID cooler, but 10+ lbs. is a bit on the heavy side. It has more than enough room for plenty of ice and food & drinks. And at the 24-hour mark, my 14 lbs. of ice was only about 15% melted, so my lunches would easily stay cold for a day on the job. However, there are two things missing: one, at this size it should have a drain at the bottom, and two … where’s the bottle opener? But at around $80 it is well worth considering as your new lunch box and an addition to your cooler collection.

Milwaukee just added another tool to their ever-popular M12 lineup.  The new Milwaukee M12 Blower is a lightweight solution to help keep job sites and other areas clean and debris-free.  So let’s jump in and see what this is all about.

Milwaukee M12 Blower Overview

Keeping the job site clean can help in keeping a safe work environment.  Without things to trip or slip on, you are creating a safer place.  Well, that is where this blower comes into play.  While this blower can be used for a lot of different applications like cleaning up after the day, drying a vehicle, and more, we had a number of guys tell us it’s perfect for those quick clean-ups to keep the work area clean.  When you are cutting or doing demo work, it’s important to keep the area clean.  With this blower, you can quickly and easily push the debris to the side and out of harm’s way.

Best of all, it’s lightweight and not too powerful where it will kick up debris in the air.

Milwaukee M12 Blower Features

Milwaukee M12 Blower

The M12 Compact Spot Blower is small and lightweight.  The blower offers 175 CFM with 110 MPH in a small compact design of only 21.5″ for blower and tube. And best of all, it only weighs 3.3 lbs.

The blower is powered by any of the Milwaukee M12 batteries.

Milwaukee M12 Blower

The handle has a traditional M12 handle with the same look and feel.

Milwaukee M12 Blower

On the top of the blower, there is a slide switch that allows the user to switch between two speeds.  This switch can easily be operated with your thumb which means you can operate this blower with one hand.

Milwaukee M12 Blower

The intake is located on the back of the blower so it won’t be trying to suck up your shirt or pants.

Milwaukee designed this blower with a single tube that can be removed.  The blower comes with two attachments, a sweeping nozzle, and a rubber nozzle.

Milwaukee M12 Blower Performance

This isn’t going to compete with the 18V or larger blowers.  So when you look at this blower, you have to understand that it’s for clean-up and other smaller jobs.  Considering that it has some serious velocity to it and enough to push small debris away, but it’s not overpowering where it will lift a ton of dust in the air and lower the air quality.

So in regards to performance for quick clean-up, it works great.  The blower is well balanced and having two speeds is a nice added touch.

Milwaukee M12 Blower Value

You can pick this up at your local Home Depot or online for about $80, which is the bare tool. The blower is a solid and quality tool.  While this isn’t going to blow you away, it’s not meant to.  So for $80, it does what you need it to do and it’s well built and will last.

Milwaukee M12 Blower Wrap Up

Overall, this is a nice addition to the M12 line.  While everyone won’t jump out of their seats to buy it, it does have its place.  For those simple clean-ups, drying applications, and more, this does the job and does it well.
