Bosch Power Tools has a highly respectable product lineup.  Though anyone is welcome to purchase Bosch equipment, the company tends to cater to professional, experienced users around the world, with dedicated websites to clients in the US and Canada. With plenty of experience and testing under my belt, I can say that Bosch equipment is dependable and easy to work with. And specifically, Bosch has been my favorite oscillating tool supplier.  And they did not disappoint with their CORE18V Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool.

Read on if you’re interested in a great oscillating multi-tool.

How to Sharpen Oscillating Blades

Want to extend the life of your oscillating blades? Read our article Sharp Pog – Oscillating Blade Sharpener Review or buy it on Amazon.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Overview

The Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool centers around cutting blades that can go through various types of wood, plastic, and metal.  The selling point is really the variety of blades that can be fitted to the Bosch StarlockPlus frame shown below.  As I’m sure you can appreciate, different materials will respond differently to various blades.  With high force and the heat generated through cutting, the wrong blade can damage the tool itself and put your surroundings at risk with sparks, flying debris, or even the tool “getting away from you”.  Of course, it is possible to have a separate cutting tool for every type of material you encounter.  But there is only so much room in your tool chest, and budget!  The Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool comes with a variety of blades that turn one piece of equipment into many. Keeping track of several blades is far simpler than keeping track of several distinct tools.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Features

An EC brushless 18V motor powers the StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool (Model GOP18V-28N), delivering enough power to handle high-end professional jobs safely.

Something I appreciate that may not be evident is the 2.8-degree arc afforded by the oscillating multi-tool. Some jobs will require awkward positioning and working in close, tight spaces.  Sometimes this can force you to choose between precision and accessibility.  Without giving in to wobble or weak performance, the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool allows you to arc the blade up to 2.8 degrees away from horizontal.

This cutting tool only weighs in at 2.7 lbs, a convenience that anyone will appreciate.  Of course, it is easy to skimp on weight if the tool components are flimsy, but lightweight combined with stability and decent performance is a testament to Bosch engineering.

As far as protection, the associated warranty lasts three years for the tool itself, two years for the battery, and the buyer gets a 30-day “money-back guarantee” if there is any dissatisfaction with the product.

The Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool is powered by a Bosch CORE18V lithium-ion battery.  Generally, CORE18V battery packs are, at the time of this writing, the “latest and greatest” in power tool battery technology.  CORE18V batteries can be recharged and put to use for high-intensity jobs without compromising safety or adding on lots of burdensome extra weight.  Given that materials to be cut and cutting locations can vary greatly, the inherent flexibility of being cordless is certainly a plus.

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

The slide-style power switch is convenient and easy to manipulate.  As Bosch is geared towards knowledgeable users, this is my preferred option over a paddle switch design.  That said, the light weight, reduced vibration, and ergonomic grip of the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool all go a long way in reducing grip fatigue and subsequently maximizing control during prolonged use.  And remember, the slide switch does not turn off blade movement if the tool gets away from you.  PPE and attentiveness to the job at hand are vital when working with blades activated by slide-switch design.

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

With a range of 8,000 – 20,000 oscillations per minute (OPM), the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool does not shy away from high performance.  The variable speed dial lets you adjust blade oscillation speed, customizing cutting power and heat/friction generated as you go through a material.  Remember that at the higher end of the tool’s OPM capacity, vibration reduction is critical for not only the user’s comfort but also tool longevity.  We tested the multi-tool at variable speeds and subjected it to various materials and can report that it absorbs vibrations as well or better than expected.

Versatility is great, but versatility with minimum accessory parts is a cherry on top that professional customers can appreciate.  After handling it, we were pleasantly surprised by the easy blade removal and replacement that the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool affords.  No extra tools are needed, giving another nod to Bosch design.

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

A LED light illuminates the region under attack by the blade.  I like this because, as stated before, close-quarter and tight-squeeze situations are inevitable.  Even a well-lit work area can have shadowy blind spots that the well-positioned and bright LED blast away.

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

The Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool purchase comes with a storage case which is a very practical place to store your various blades.  Misplacing a blade is akin to losing one of the tool’s features. The handy case helps you keep everything relating to the multi-tool together, in one convenient place.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Performance

Bosch Starlock Oscillating Tool

After some work, it was noted that there wasn’t much vibration generated by the tool, even at higher OPMs.  Ease of blade replacement was confirmed.  Lastly, and perhaps most important, the overall user-friendly ergonomic design was noticeable and reflects well on the Bosch brand.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Value

After a close look, we have to admit that this tool is worth the price.  Currently available for $149.00 at Lowe’s, it offers a flexible and powerful cutting capacity that is not easy to match.

Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool Wrap Up

This piece of equipment is certainly not unique when it comes to providing cutting capacity through various woods, metals, and plastics. Having said that, the ergonomic design, ease of use, and lack of accessory tools needed to change blades certainly put the Bosch StarlockPlus Oscillating Tool in a good light.  It should certainly be in the running if you need a powerful, cordless, low-vibration, lightweight, oscillating cutting tool.

You probably know that Fein was the company that invented the Oscillating tool, but did you know it was invented in 1967 to remove plaster casts from patients?  They needed a tool to remove plaster casts without damaging or hurting the patient’s skin.  Today we don’t think much about it; as tradesmen and homeowners, we just know the Oscillating tool as one of those handy tools that make our life easier.  So let’s take a look at the Milwaukee Oscillating Tool.

How to Sharpen Oscillating Blades

Want to extend the life of your oscillating blades? Read our article Sharp Pog – Oscillating Blade Sharpener Review or buy it on Amazon.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool Overview

Milwaukee is one of the dominant power tool manufacturers in the marketplace.  They have come a long way since TTI bought them out.  They have grown their line and market share from nothing to one of the market leaders.

The Milwaukee Oscillating Tool is another tool in their arsenal and just another reason you may want to consider Milwaukee for your core line of power tools.  When you invest in Milwaukee, not only are you investing in a professional power tool line, but you are investing in a quality line that offers one of the largest lines of tools.  So you can expand into many different power tools without having to invest in different battery platforms and manufacturers.  So right off the bat, this is a huge plus and we haven’t even started talking about the Milwaukee Oscillating Tool.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool Features

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool

Milwaukee built this oscillating tool (2836-20, 2836-21) with a brushless motor for longevity and performance.  The brushless motor delivers 10,000 to 20,000 OPM and has a 4.2-degree oscillating angle.

One of the best features is something you can not see.  The tool has a vibration dampening system so no more feeling the tingle in your hand when using on longer projects.

Another cool feature that you can not see is this oscillating tool has the ability to start slowly and then ramp up which helps when trying to make precise cuts.

The oscillating tool will work with any M18 battery.  For me, I like the 5Ah battery; the 9Ah and 12Ah are too heavy for this type of tool.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool

The handgrip has nice rubber padding, so even when we had gloves on, the tool was easy to hold onto and work with.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool

On top of the tool, there is a slide switch to turn it on and off.  The switch is easy to access with your thumb so if you are holding your work with your other hand and are done with a cut, you can easily still hold onto your work and slide the switch off with your thumb, providing safe control the whole time.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool

On the side, the operator can control the variable speed.  There are 10 settings along with the Auto-Load feature which starts slowly and then ramps up the OPM.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool

On the front, there is an integrated 180-degree LED light.

Milwaukee designed this with tool-free blade changes.  Just pull up on the lever, loosen the screw by hand and insert the accessory.

The kit comes with one blade and some sand paper to get you started.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool Performance

We did a lot of different applications from cutting out drywall, cutting into lumber from 2×4’s to 4×4’s, and even did some sanding.  For all the applications, this oscillating tool did its job.

Not only did it do its job, but the vibration was also much lower than we have seen with other oscillating tools.

For performance, this is one of the top oscillating tools we have tested and it’s right up there with the Bosch.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool Value

You can pick this tool up at The Home Depot for about $330 which comes with a battery.  If you own batteries and want the bare tool, you can expect to pay about $229.

Overall, this is a good value.  You get a professional tool, with low vibration, variable speed, and the power to tackle any task, it’s worth the investment.

Milwaukee Oscillating Tool Wrap Up

Bottom line, this is another great addition from Milwaukee.  The tool is easy to control, offers very low vibration, and is powerful.  What is there not to like about this tool?

When it comes to 12V, no other power tool manufacturer compares to Milwaukee.  Milwaukee has created a 12V line of power tools like no other.  Their 12V line of tools offers not only general power tools but trade-specific tools for plumbers, electricians, and more.  Today we are covering another addition to the M12 lineup, the Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool.

How to Sharpen Oscillating Blades

Want to extend the life of your oscillating blades? Read our article Sharp Pog – Oscillating Blade Sharpener Review or buy it on Amazon.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool Overview

If you are like me, you might think a 12V is cool, but can it really offer power?  Can it offer enough power to be on the jobsite or is it just one of the 12V tools you have around for smaller jobs?  Heck with it being small, will the vibrations just ruin the experience.

I know I am jumping ahead of myself but this tool defies what you might think about 12V oscillating tools.  This tool is powerful, awesome run time, and easy to work with, and doesn’t create a ton of vibrations.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool Features

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool

The Milwaukee Multi-Tool, model 2526 features a brushless motor that delivers 10,000 – 20,000 OPM and will maintain speeds even under certain loads.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool

While the tool will work with any M12 battery, the high capacity 4Ah or 6Ah are probably best suited for this tool.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool

On top of the tool is the slide switch to turn on and off the tool.

The variable speed dial is located on the side of the tool and offers 12 different settings.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool

One feature I like about this tool is the diameter of the handle.  I like how slim the handle is and how you can wrap your fingers around the handle.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool

On the front of the tool, there is an LED light to help light up dark areas.

The Multi-Tool offers a tool-free blade change.

I am not sure if this is new for Milwaukee but this is the first I have heard of it.  Milwaukee has their own oscillating blades.  We used a bunch of the blades for different applications and they seem to be great blades.  They held up under heavy conditions and lasted.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool Performance

When it comes to performance, this oscillating tool blew us away.  The tool is powerful and when you watch the video below, it was faster than the 18v version.  In fact, we have been using this around the shop to show off blades cutting nails, making holes, and more.  Each time we reached for this Milwaukee because it was powerful.

Trust me, I know when you think 12V, you might not think power, but this 12V will change your mind.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool Value

You can pick up the Milwaukee oscillating tool at The Home Depot for about $220, which includes the tool, a battery, charger, soft case, and some accessories.  Normally I would say this is on the high side and expensive but after using it and what we have done with this tool, I think it’s a great price.

The tool is solid, works like a champ, and not a ton of vibrations for the power and size of the tool.

Milwaukee M12 Oscillating Tool Final Thoughts

All in all, this is a great tool.  Powerful, easy to work with, and a great addition to the M12 lineup.  I am excited about seeing Milwaukee offering their own oscillating accessories and from what we have seen so far, the accessories held up compared to other brands.

As far as the power-tool spectrum goes, Multi-Tools are a pretty late arrival to the game. We have seen before that some attempts at “re-inventing the wheel” do not go over well. But just because Multi-Tools have not been around long, does not mean that they’re not worthy of a spot in your shop or toolbox. They’re in a class of their own, with good reason. Not much else in the store or on the job site is quite like it. Our Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review will show you why you should be lining up to buy this class of tool, and especially this one in particular.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review Overview

Multi-Tools, like the Dremel Multi-Max MM45, fit well in the “Jack of All Trades” category. These little tools have a plethora of attachments. They don’t do anything that cannot be done any other way. But they do make it very easy to do some things that can be difficult or time consuming the previous ways.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

Multi-Tools have an oscillating head that moves a few degrees in either direction. For this reason, they’re rather safe. This is because there is almost no kick-back when cutting because of the oscillating movement. The short stroke also makes it less likely to take a finger off accidentally, when compared to something like a circular saw. These tools are a favorite of Homeowners and Carpenters who need an easy way to perform several functions.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review Features

The box is quite impressive with all of the features it showcases. The sheer amount of attachments that are included is impressive as well. There is also a notation on the box about all the different other brand blades that are compatible with the Dremel tool. That means that blade and implement replacement is easy. Some other brands of Multi-Tools require their own specific blades, which no one likes. Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

The first grasp was quite telling. The body of the tool is solid feeling and heavy. The outer case is plastic but very sturdy. Housed inside is the very powerful 5.0 amp motor, the heart of the tool. The rubber inserts make the tool easy to hold, even with gloves or sweaty hands.

The power cord is heavy duty (for the large 5.0 amp motor) and is a two-prong plug.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

Probably my favorite feature is the Quick Lock system. Most other brands require you to hold down some sort of spring-loaded lever to release blades. This spring-loaded lever is usually hard to keep held down while you’re trying to get the blade lined up the way you want. I have pinched many a finger previously. Dremel’s Quick Lock system puts an end to all that heartache (and “fingerache”). The lever on the head of the tool locks in place, both released and secured. There is also a positive stop on both ends of travel so you know when it is all the way open or closed.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

Furthermore, there are 2 magnets on the head. These magnets hold the blades in place so you can lock the head without it falling off or moving. This feature was extremely helpful while trying to get the holes lined up on the blade.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

The variable speed knob is easy to use but out of the way so you will not accidentally turn it.

A vast assortment of blades and sanding attachments were included in the box. I was really surprised at how substantial the saw blades were. All of the Dremel branded attachments were very well made.

I received two additional sets of blades to use during testing. They were all equally as high in quality. They performed as well as the blades included with the saw.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review Performance

Multiple things surprised me with this tool. I have owned and used multiple other manufacturer’s versions of this tool. They ranged from value brands, to what well-known quality brands. The Dremel Multi-Max MM45 exceeded my expectations.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

The tool is a bit heavier than similar models. It feels very solid, yet easy to hold. The controls are easy to manipulate. The power switch is large and easy to move with your thumb while not changing your grip. It is also big enough to be easily actuated with gloves on and it’s positive engagement makes it easy to tell when it is ON or OFF.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

This tool is far more powerful than most others, thanks to the whopping 5.0 amp motor. I used the small saw blade on something that this probably would not normally see a whole lot of, hardwood. I used the hardwood handle from an old hammer I am restoring. It cut through the hardwood like a proverbial hot knife through butter. The cut was smooth and had no burning. I have experienced burning, even with new blades, with other brands.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

The sanding attachment along with a 60-grit pad made quick use of the finish of the hardwood handle. It brought the finish down to the bare wood almost immediately. A flat spot was easily sanded on the side of the handle.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

Blades are easily attached and removed. The magnets helped out a lot more than I expected them to. I noticed rather quickly how much of an asset the locking lever was. It is a far superior design than the more common spring-loaded lever. You must hold the spring open while removing and attaching blades. On the Dremel Multi-Max MM45, the lever locks open and you are free to use both hands if need be to align the attachment in the desired orientation. This system was extremely user-friendly. It also avoided the pinched fingertips that I have previously experienced with other brands.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review Value

Since oscillating Multi-Tools are available from pretty much every power tool manufacturer, their prices vary greatly. Their quality and features do too.

The Dremel Multi-Max MM45 comes in near the top of the pack for power, features, and quality. For these reasons, it is also towards the top of the price spectrum, but for good reason. The Home Depot offers this particular model for $129.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review

I have had other, less expensive oscillating Multi-Tools, and I can definitely tell you that you get what you pay for. The Dremel Multi-Max MM45 is much more powerful, built better, quieter, and easier to use than the one I paid half as much for. I was really surprised how much better the Dremel Multi-Max MM45 was, in every way, compared to my previous tools.

If I had to do it all over again, even though I do not use this kind of tool daily, I would pony up the extra cash for the extra features this model has.

Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Review Final Thought

Until this point, when I heard “Dremel”, I thought of their iconic rotary tools. This tool has changed my view on Dremel without a doubt. They managed to bring the same quality and features that we all know and expect from their rotary tools, into the Dremel Multi-Max MM45 Oscillating Multi-Tool. If you are in the market for a new Multi-Tool, be sure to consider this option from Dremel.

Bosch is known for their quality tools.  While they are not always first to market, they are always ranked as one of the highest and most quality power tool manufacturers around.  If you have been following us for a while, you know we love the Bosch oscillating tools.  They are powerful and smooth.  Doesn’t matter if you are looking at the corded version or cordless version, they are all top of the line.  Recently Bosch introduced their 12V oscillating tool so let’s take a look at the Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review.

How to Sharpen Oscillating Blades

Want to extend the life of your oscillating blades? Read our article Sharp Pog – Oscillating Blade Sharpener Review or buy it on Amazon.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review Overview

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

Bosch is known for their oscillating tools.  In fact, the 18V is one of the best cordless oscillating tools on the market.  As you can see, the 12V, while slimmer on the end where the battery is located, is still about the same length.  Sure, it’s not as long, but the length makes it easy to control.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

There is a lot to love about the 18v so let’s see if the 12v has the same features and performance.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review Features

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

When I usually start with a review I talk about the things I like about a tool, but this time I am going to mix it up because there are three things that stand out and I wish Bosch would do something about.  First, I can only find this as a bare tool.  This tool is awesome, I just think they need to have a package with the battery and the charger.

Second, what bothers me is there isn’t a case or tool bag for the tool.  Once I take it out of the box, what do I do with the tool?  I have to get my own bag?  I really wish Bosch would include a way to transport this tool.  I like having my batteries, charger and blades all with the tool.

I did say three things, but you will have to wait for number 3.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

Bosch includes a case for the blades.  When you buy the tool, you do get one blade.  For me, I love this case because I use it all the time with my 18v tool.  I can have a bunch of extra blades and different types of blades.  They are all in one place and all protected.  Very cool case and glad they included it.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

The tool is cordless so you do need a 12v battery to run the tool.  I would suggest buying a 2Ah battery.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

Bosch designed the GOP12V-28 around a brushless motor, which means it’s efficient and will have a longer run time.  I am sure you want to know the runtime.  Well, it really depends upon your application.  Are you cutting hard wood or some pine door molding?

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

I love how Bosch kept the length long which means it’s more comfortable and very easy to control.  The tool only weighs 2 lbs.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

The on/off switch is located on the top of the tool.  It’s very easy to access with your thumb and you can operate it all with a single hand.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

The area you grab onto is slim and has a nice rubber texture for grip and comfort.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

One item I love about this tool is the variable speed dial.  I love being able to control the speed and change the speed to my applications.  5,000 to 20,000 oscillations per minute.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

Bosch doesn’t have battery fuel status on the battery.  So Bosch did include this on the tool.  When you turn on the oscillating tool, you can see how much juice is left on your battery.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

The tool is designed with the Starlock system which is awesome.  This keeps the blade in place and stays in place even if it binds.  Perfect for flush cuts.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

Okay, now on to number three (remember there were three items that bothered me about this tool?).  For some reason I have to use a hex wrench to change the blade.  This means more time and I have to keep track of an extra tool.  The 18v has such a nice and simple way to change the blade.  I really wish they could have figured out a way to have the same system on their 12v.

Now to their credit, maybe it has to do with the size of the tool.  Maybe if they added that type of blade change system, the head might be too big.  This is designed for compact use and tighter areas.  However being a consumer, I want ease of use.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

Looking down where you will be cutting, you have great vision and nothing on the tool will block your vision.  Plus the tool has a 2.8° oscillating arc.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review Performance

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

We cut through a wide variety of material including this pine.  The oscillating tool is very smooth and I love the variable speed.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review

The tool is very easy to control.  So it doesn’t matter if you are cutting down some trim for flooring, an electrical box or something that takes more finesse, the tool performs smooth.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Review Value

You can pick up the 12V Bosch Oscillating tool on Amazon for about $120, which is the bare tool.  I haven’t seen a kit except overseas.  I don’t know if Bosch has plans to release a kit, they may just be testing the waters to see how the Americans grasp the 12V Bosch tools.

If you are in the Bosch 12V line, I would pick this up as it’s a great value for $120.  Now if you are not in the Bosch 12V line, I would suggest going with the Bosch 18V since the 18V line is huge, the 18V oscillating tool is one of the best on the market and it has the quick release function without adding much bulk.

Bosch 12V Oscillating Tool Final Thoughts

When it comes to oscillating tools, Bosch has designed a huge winner with their 18V and now their 12V tool.  The tool is easy to work with, easy to maneuver, powerful and doesn’t produce a lot of feedback on your hands and arms.  Anyone looking for a top of the line 12V oscillating tool should look at the Bosch GOP12V-28N.

Okay I get it, that title is a powerful statement and not everyone will agree.  So go ahead and tell me how wrong I am, but just a little heads up.  I have been married for 13 years and I am used to being told that I am wrong.  However I truly feel this is the best oscillating tool on the market and no, we aren’t getting paid by Bosch.  So why am I making this statement?  Well I will get to that below.  We have reviewed a couple Bosch Oscillating tools in the past.  We reviewed the Bosch corded MX30EC-21 and the Bosch cordless MXH180.  Both of these models surpassed our expectations in the oscillating tool category.  They are powerful and extremely smooth when operating.  So when we heard that Bosch StarLock Plus was available, we just had to get our hands on this tool.

Bosch StarLock Plus Overview

Bosch StarLock PlusBosch offers this in two different models – GOP40-30B and the GOP40-30C.  While the tools are exactly the same, the B comes with less accessories and a soft case, while the C has a hard case and more accessories.  So what is the StarLock Plus system?  The Bosch StarLock Plus oscillating tool is a new way to attach accessories to an oscillating tool.  As you know accessories such as blades are thin and a little flimsy.  So when you take a powerful tool and attach a small accessory, the trick is being able to transfer the power from the tool to the blade.  So what Bosch did was develop a new way so more of the accessory is touching or grabbing the head of the tool, therefore transferring more of the power to the blade.  So with greater contact area, you can use more of the torque from the tool, which means greater output and more work.

The design of this system didn’t stop there.  They now have a no touch blade changing system.  Moving the lever on the front of the tool will allow two prongs to close together.  Now just take your blade and press it up against the tool and it will automatically lock the blade in place.  Removing the blade is just as easy.  Pull back on the lever and the blade easily comes off the tool.  As you might guess, this design also makes it easy and quick to change angles on any accessory.

The inside of the tool starts with a 4 amp motor that produces 8,000 to 20,000 oscillations per minute with a 3.0° oscillating arc.  To power up or down the tool, just move the top thumb switch forward or back.  If you need to adjust the speed, no worries.  On the back of the tool, there is a thumb dial that will allow you to easily adjust the speeds. One cool feature is the constant responsive design which means even under load, the tool will keep working at the speed you set the tool for.

The outside of the tool is slim and only weighs 3.3 lbs.  When you are using the tool, you will notice it doesn’t vibrate your hand off like other oscillating tools we have seen.  This is partly because of the internal workings of the Bosch StarLock Plus.  The tool has reinforced gearing, which also means more durability.  Don’t worry, there are also two LED lights that help shine up dark corners when working with shadows.

Bosch didn’t stop there.  They also have two cool features on the front and back of the tool.  On the front, you will notice a no-mar pad to help protect delicate work.  While in the back, the cord has a swivel to help maneuver the tool easier and also protect the cord.

Bosch StarLock Plus Performance

Bosch StarLock PlusEverything above sounds great, but how does it perform?  Well once you get this in your hands you will see it performs awesome.  The vibrations are very minimal which means you won’t have that tingling feeling in your hand when done for the day.  Now we don’t have the technology to test the torque transfer, but we do notice this tool defiantly cuts much better than other tools we have tried, so we are assuming the torque transfer with Bosch StarLock Plus is working.  Now I know some people complained before about the variable speed being on the back of the tool, but most will agree that is the perfect place to place the speed dial so you don’t accidentally bump it with your hand or work, which could alter your final work.  I also know some people may think all oscillating tools are the same, but I can assure you that this is not the case.

Festool may be unheard of to the average DIY type, but to the professional it is the crème de la crème of tools.  The moment you use your first Festool you will understand why they are so revered. The Vecturo has some features that Festool owners expect like a detachable cord, ergonomic handle and precise operation.  The tool has a 400 watt motor that produces up to 18,500 oscillations per minute with a 4 degree angle.   It uses a pin and latch system to hold the accessory, similar to the FEIN Multi Master.

The highlight of this kit is the included accessories, notably the plunge base.  The plunge base easily attaches and lines up with the angle you have on the blade.  It then stabilizes the tool so you can make one of the most accurate plunge cuts you have ever seen from a multi tool.  The plunge bas has a magnet that keeps the blade steady and eliminates it from wandering providing a clean perfect cut.  This attachment gives you more control than any other multi tool on the market.

The tool comes in a Systainer case with a few blades and accessories.  You can also just get the tool with no accessories.   Overall this tool produces perfect results and those who know Festool wouldn’t expect any less.

Check out the Festool OS 400 on Amazon.

We take a look at the 3 top brands of oscillating tools.  We tested both corded and cordless.  Our test was not scientific at all.  It also wasn’t consistent as we used different blades.  We just wanted to give our opinions of what we liked and what we didn’t.  Watch the video to see the tests.

Here are our final results:

Cordless Multi-Tool

1. DeWALT DCS355 via Amazon – The DeWALT just barely edged out the Bosch in the cordless category.  We liked the ergonomics and power.  The DeWALT along with its Porter Cable sibling have the quickest accessory changes in the industry.  However the quick change can only be used with specific types of accessories.  I personally also like the trigger control of this unit which sets it apart from the competition. Vibrations were minimal.  This is the only tool of the 3 that had an LED light.

2. Bosch MXH180 via Amazon – The Bosch was a close second to the DeWALT. Its quick change system can be used with most any accessory and the tool handles vibrations very well. The tool doesn’t lack in the power department either with its adjustable speed settings.  It handled the vibrations better than any other cordless we have tested.

3. FEIN MultiMaster AFMM14 via Amazon – While the FEIN is still a good multi tool it lacked on ergonomics and after we were using it out hands still felt numb from the vibrations.  For being a 14.4 V the tool kept up with the power of the bigger voltage tools.  Another thing I wasn’t too keen on was the accessory change system.  You have to pull a lever and remove a pin which means an extra step and a part to lose. Another downfall is the high price.

Corded Multi-Tool

1.  Bosch MX30 via Amazon – With the simple quick accessory change and almost vibration-less feel the MX30 took the lead in this category.  Power, quality and ergonomics all came into the play.  I truly feel Bosch is the way to go for a corded Multi Tool.

2. FEIN MultiMaster 250 via Amazon –  The MultiMaster would have taken top spot  this category but was held back by the pin and lever style accessory system.  As far as performance and ergonomics it was stellar, probably the best out of all 3 corded models we tested.

3. DeWALT DWE315K via Amazon – This was a tight decision and because the DeWALT came in 3rd doesn’t mean that it is not an awesome tool.  The DeWALT is feature packed but just didn’t feel as good vibration wise on the cuts compared the other 2.  As far as features it is at the top.

Bottom Line

No matter which one of these tools you choose it will be a good choice.  If you already have DeWALT or Bosch batteries you would be crazy not to go with those tools. As for the corded the choice is yours!

I got a chance to use the 4 amp Sonicrafter F50 on a recent wood floor we were working on.  I really got to be familiar with the tool and like Rockwell says it really is one of the fastest oscillating tools I have ever tested.  It rips through plywood at screaming speeds, it was impressive.  It weighs 3.3 lbs, has an oscillation speed of 11000-20000 RPM and an oscillation of 5 degrees.  Speed can be set via a dial at the base of the unit.  It is the fastest cutting OMT I have seen cutting through plywood.

The 10′ long cord is a nice added feature.  The tool comes with a few blades, scraper and a sanding attachment with some sanding sheets.  I felt this tool excelled at most jobs except for sanding. The sanding pads had a hard time staying attached and the back would wear out before the actual sanding side.  This tool can use almost every manufacturers accessories via the tool-free Hyperlock system.  This clamp locks the accessory with 1 ton of clamping force.  The hyper lock does the job but is nothing that we have not seen before.  The 2 LED lights on the front do a good job of illuminating the work area. Vibration dampening and ergonomics were pretty much on par with most other oscillating tools we have used.  Overall the latest Sonicrafter will work for just about anyone needing a multi-tool.  I like the selection of accessories that it comes with.  Check it out via Amazon,

Fein invented the oscillating tool, it is a German engineered marvel.  Like most German companies they have always built a quality tool.  Once their patent expired other brands instantly jumped on the band wagon giving Fein some competition.  The next generation FEIN MultiMaster 350 Q has 35% more power, 70% less vibration and is 50% quieter according to Fein.

In our tests we could tell right away that the all vibrations have almost disappeared.  they did a real good job of omitting the vibrations.  The speed selector is now easier to operate as it is a traditional style thumb wheel vs the old rotating knob on last generations 250 Q.  The 350 Q puts out 350W of power.  Quite an improvement over its 250W predecessor. The tool felt good in my hands, I didn’t find it bulky or uncomfortable at all.  The tool feels quality, you can feel it just buy holding it, after you use it you are sold.  The tool weighs 2.8lbs and produces 11,000 – 20,000 oscillations per minute in a 3.2 degree arc.

I was kind of hoping for an easier accessory change than the latch and pin system.  You flip the top latch and pull the pin from the bottom.  This is a tried and tested system to hold on to the accessories but the pin can fall and get lost easily. Hey, at-least it is tool free.  Less steps and parts is always better.  The tool has an extra long 16′ AC cord which is a plus but no LED head light.   The kit comes in different variants depending on your budget.  This starter system came with a multi saw blade, scraper and 5 sanding accessories.  The starter kit is the most affordable choice.  If you want one of the best multi tools on the market take a look at the FEIN MultiMaster 350 Q.  Check it out on Amazon.

If you would have asked me a couple years ago about oscillating tools what I thought, I would have told you I don’t need them and they are a gimmick.  The reason being is because an oscillating tool was something I saw on late night tv and just like the other 150 million items, seem to be junk.  Well good thing you didn’t ask me that question a while back because I would have been dead wrong.  In fact, now it is one of my go to tools. Besides the blades being a rip off, these tools are great and invaluable.  Okay, enough small talk, let’s jump into the Milwaukee M18 Oscillating tool.

When you first pick up this tool, you can tell Milwaukee put some thought into it.  The tool is well balanced and feels very nice in your hand.  The tool weighs 4.15 lbs.  When using the tool, the vibrations are kept low and you don’t feel a lot of vibrations transferred to your hand.  This system is like most of the others out there, it has a variable speed dial.  This one is located on the handle and can allow the user to adjust speeds from 11,000 to 18,000 OPM.  One very cool thing Milwaukee did with this tool is integrate a nice bright LED to the front, which does a great job lighting up your work.

Milwaukee M18 Oscillating Tool 9Changing the blade is also easy.  Now this isn’t the fastest system we have seen, but it does a pretty good job.  Just lift a lever up in the front of the tool and now you can unscrew a bolt that is holding the blade in place.  Good news is you don’t need a tool, but the bad news is you have an extra part on the tool.  We all know what happens to these parts, yes they get lost.  Plus, you now also have the opportunity to introduce foreign materials into the shaft where the bolt goes.  I don’t know if I am spoiled with the Bosch and Dewalt, but I would like to see a different system.  For most people, this won’t bother anyone and in reality, if I own the Milwaukee M18 line, I would buy this in a heart beat and wouldn’t second guess myself.  If I was looking for the best, I still prefer the Bosch MX30EC for corded and the Bosch MXH180 for cordless.

To wrap this up, Milwaukee did a great job with the design of this tool.  While I complain about the blade change system, the reality is it is still quick and easy, much better than using a tool.  The main points to this tool are durability, ease of use, low vibration and comfort and Milwaukee tackled all of those points and made a great oscillating tool.

Multi-tools have been around for a while and it’s no secret that DeWALT was one of the last players to the game.  I can see why they were so late, they have basically changed the entire way you operate the tool.  Basically most Multi-Tools have an on/off switch and a rotary dial.  The DeWALT Multi-Tool has a paddle trigger that controls the variable speed and a handle that looks like it should be on a drill rather than a Multi-Tool.  There is a downside to this that if you want constant speed below full speed you will have to hold the trigger in that position.  The trigger does lock but only at full speed for applications like sanding and extended cutting.

The tool weighs in at 3.2 lbs which is fairly light for an 18/20V Multi-Tool. Having a 2.0 Ah Slim XR battery helps keep the weight down.  The battery also has the 3 green LED fuel status gauge.  DeWALT really flexed their industrial design muscles with this tool.  The curves are sleek with rubber over-mold covering most of the tool.  This helps prevent marking up a surface and aids in comfort.  The balance and comfort level is great!  The grip resembles the same grip that they use on their drills.  This grip alone makes it the most comfortable one-handed Multi-Tool around.  I don’t know that DeWALT recommends using this tool for one-handed operation but hey sometimes you have to reach out and get the job finished even if only one hand is available.  For dark situations an LED on the front leads the way.

The DCS355 produces up to 20,000 oscillations per minute at an oscillation angle of 1.6 degrees which is enough to get most any job done.  A brushless motor means more run time.  The trigger adds precise control, I like this feature but I think some hardcore Multi-Tool users might not like it and stay with the old school on/off and power dial way.  The “QUICK-CHANGE” accessory change is the fastest in the industry and can save massive amounts of time especially if you frequently change accessories or blade angles.  The down side to this is that to attain this feature you have to use with DeWALT or Porter Cable accessories.  You can use almost any other brands accessories with the included hex screw which allows you to attach an accessory by screwing it down.  So for speedy changes you have to use DeWALT or Porter Cable accessories.  The DCS355D1 comes with a 28 piece accessory kit which includes 2 blades and a nice plastic case.

The tool worked very well for us.  As with any Multi-Tool you want the tool to do the work and this tool has the power and comfort to produce great results.  So now you are thinking WOW this tool is made for precise control!  Yet you have not even seen the tool guide.  Basically it adjusts for blade depth, this is great for long or a lot of uniform cuts.  At the end of the guide there is a wheel that rolls across the work surface.  The guide bracket can be easily removed via 2 allen screws when you don’t need it. This tool is covered by a 3 year warranty from DeWALT.  Personally I think this is one of the best Multi-Tools on the market to date.

DeWALT fans rejoice the multi-tool is finally here after years of waiting.  Does it blow the competition away? Was it worth the wait?  Let’s find out.  The DWE315K is the kit and it comes with 29 accessories of which 25 are sanding discs.  It also comes with a bag and a plastic case to hold the included accessories.  DeWALT added a level of control to this tool not seen before, a variable speed paddle trigger.  This gives the multi-tool a whole new level of control, one handed operation is a breeze.  The 13″ long tool weighs in at 3.1lbs.  It has a drill like grip and plenty of rubber over-mold to make almost any position comfortable.  The tool has 3.0 amps of power to cut through almost any material at 0-22,000 oscillations per minute @ a 1.6 degree angle.

On the head of the tool is a bright white LED light that illuminates the work area.  Back in 2011 we gave an award to the Porter Cable PC250 at the 2011 Tools in Action Tool Awards for its innovative blade change system.  The DeWALT incorporates basically the same system and is the fastest tool-less accessory change on the market.  That is only when DeWALT and Porter Cable accessories are used.  You can use other brands accessories but you will have to use the included hex screw and washer to attach it to the DWE315.  DeWALT also included a depth adjustment bar that is removable.  It allows you to have accurate depth and height control. The total control of this multi-tool is unmatched.  However if you need anything less than full power for long periods you will not like this tool.  The paddle switch can be locked on full speed only, other tools turn on and you can dial in the power to a constant speed.

While using this tool I really liked the ability to hold it like a drill with one hand.  It felt natural and well balanced.  While there was no dust extraction port we have seen some european models with a dust extraction accessory that I am sure will be available here soon.  DeWALT covers this tool with a 3 year warranty.  For the finish carpenter, installer and re-modeler an oscillating multi-tool is a life saver.  The DeWALT DWE315 will not disappoint and was worth the wait.

In my personal opinion, Bosch makes one of the best oscillating tools around. I have been using the Bosch Corded Oscillating tool MX30EC-21 for a while and love it.  The tool is powerful, low vibrations, easy to work with and can change blades in no time.  The MX30EC-21 is a real workhorse.  Bosch knows they have a winner with this tool, so they decided to take it one step further with the first brushless oscillating tool, the MXH180.  If you put these two tools next to each other, they look identical, except one has a cord and one has a battery.

How to Sharpen Oscillating Blades

Want to extend the life of your oscillating blades? Read our article Sharp Pog – Oscillating Blade Sharpener Review or buy it on Amazon.

Bosch MXH180 Cordless Oscillating Tool Overview

The MXH180 is powered by an 18V battery and has an opm of 8,000-20,000. On the back of the tool, the user can move a dial switch to adjust the oscillations per minute.  The tool is powered by a brushless motor which gives it more power and a longer run time than brushed versions of this tool.  If you’re familiar with the corded version, the locking system is identical.  You can lock the accessory in the tool in 12 different positions and you don’t need any tools.   Two very cool features to this tool are soft start and constant response.  The soft start is really nice because you don’t get that jerk when you initially turn the tool on.  The constant response is great because you don’t lose power.  When you are making a cut or sanding, the circuity will monitor the tool.  Instead of losing power, it will keep a constant speed.   As with the corded version, the rubberized grip makes this tool comfortable to use.  This one also has the same ribs on the front which are no-mar to help protect your work and not damage anything.

Now I can’t claim I have used this as much as the corded version, but I do have some time on this tool.  The soft start is great, no worries about having your hand or arm jerk when the tool is turned on.  The constant response feature makes this tool great.

We released the video before this article.  One knock I have seen so far is people saying it looks bulky.  Compared to the corded version, it  is roughly the same size, a little bigger.  On the back of the tool, there is more flare because of the battery.  For me, this tool isn’t bulky.  I am not sure if I am so use to using the corded version, but this tool just feels nice in your hands.  I think watching it in the video, it might appear more bulky than it really is.  The tool is only a little over a foot long and weighs a little over 4 lbs., which includes the battery.

Overall if you are looking for a cordless oscillating tool, this is it.  The tool is powerful, low vibrations and very easy to work with.  The tool-less blade change is awesome.  Easy to change a blade or sanding pad.  Once the accessory is on the tool, it stays there, no matter how much pressure you put on the tool.  The soft start and constant response makes this one smooth oscillating tool.

When Multi-Tools were released they were the best thing since sliced bread.  Well now they have been around for a while and we are starting to see 2.0 versions of these tools.  Things like tool- less blade change and cross brand accessory compatibility are defining the second generation of these tools.

Rockwell has recently revamped the Sonicrafter and come out with 3 models to fit most anyone’s needs.  We got to test out these bad boys and like all Rockwell tools you get a good value for the money.  The new tool has a universal fit system that allows you to use any other manufactures accessories.  This is a great feature.   We all know that Rockwell builds some great clamping tools so they brought that knowledge over and they call it Hyperlock.  1 ton of clamping force holds the accessory in place.  You release the lever on the top and a pin drops from the bottom allowing you to insert the accessory.

The 3 amp X2 is the top of the line Sonicrafter.  It comes with a cool case, a bunch of accessories, including a Sonishear which works great cutting open those stubborn plastic packages.  This tool is robust and very comfortable to work with.  They also have a 2.5 amp and a 2.3 amp version of the tool depending on your budget.  Great features and good price points make the Rockwell Sonicrafter an excellent choice for anyone looking for a quality oscillating tool.
