IRWIN puts out a product line of tools and accessories intended for professionals and DIY’ers alike.  Broadly speaking, the company has an international presence with a dedicated web presence as far as Brazil, Germany, and Russia; to name a few.  With this background, IRWIN “STRAIT-LINE” tape measure products have a good reputation going in.  Here we will look specifically at the 16′, 25′, and 35′ IRWIN Tape Measure products.

IRWIN Tape Measure Overview

I must admit that the tape measure marketplace is crowded.  It seems nearly every tool manufacturer has a tape measure or similar product.  Fair enough, but IRWIN still managed to put out a solid piece of equipment for a reasonable price, so I feel it’s worth the time to look closer at these particular tape measures.

IRWIN Tape Measure Features

First point of note: the IRWIN Tape Measures are available in three lengths: 16′, 25′, and 35′.  This is just a personal opinion, but I have a bias towards the 35′ tape measure simply because it obviously covers the length scales of the smaller tape measures, and then some.  Another point is IRWIN’s bright blue/yellow color scheme.  I like it. Especially if you’re working outside and drop one, they are easy to spot compared to many that, for lack of a better word, can seem almost camouflaged.

The relevant model numbers are as follows:

  • 16-ft: IWHT39391S
  • 25-ft: IWHT39393S
  • 35-ft: IWHT39395S

We also took a close look at each tape’s standout.  For those unfamiliar, “standout” is how far out the tape measure can extend unsupported before folding down under its own weight. The two larger IRWIN Tape Measures declare a 17′ standout, but the 16′ measure tops out at, of course, 16 feet. A standout of 17 feet is similar to the standout claim from Milwaukee Tool for their industry-favorite 35′ tape.  We tested IRWIN’s standout claims and the tape has to be perfectly level to get even close to 17′ before folding.  Folding at approximately 10-11′ was normal after repeated tests.  As such, we are not sure what conditions are needed for the claimed 17′ standout to hold.

Irwin Tape Measure

A nod to good design: the IRWIN tape measures feature a durable rubber-coated frame for easy grip.  The rubberized material is handy, especially in extreme heat or cold.

Also, as you can see in the image, the lock button is wide, even on the 16′ tape measure.  And I like that the lock button extends out a bit further than most, which makes it fairly easy to engage.

Complimenting the lock button, there is a generous-sized finger brake opening on the tape measure’s underside.  This allows you to temporarily stop the tape from retracting instead of engaging the lock button.

Irwin Tape Measure

Each IRWIN tape measure comes with a black metal belt clip so you can attach them to your belt, pocket, and/or tool bucket.  I tried all three tape measures, and have the following to say:

  1. I feel the wire style clip on Milwaukee tape measures of similar measuring capacity, much more easily catch and clip onto my pants pocket.
  2. Weight: The 16′ tape measure hangs comfortably.  The larger tape measures, especially the 35′, drag down the pants, even when tightly belted. The 35′ weighs in at just under 2 lbs.  I feel unless you a wearing a tool belt or have another hanging spot that is reinforced, the larger tape measures simply add too much weight to be wearable.

Irwin Tape Measure

As mentioned, the finger brake opening is an additional convenience that helps to pin down length measurements.  All three tape measures offer great finger brake functionality and placement that doesn’t leave much to criticize.

Irwin Tape Measure

The tape hook is par for the course as far as design and depth go.  IRWIN Tape Measure hooks have a nail slot for “grappling” onto screws and nail heads.  Also, I very much appreciate the tall “bunny ears” that let you measure accurately from side angles.  With all due respect to the competition, some other tape measures do not offer nearly as much bunny-ear grip as the IRWIN Tape Measures.

These IRWIN tape measures have a glossy blade coating. I would say a bit too much shine, as I found the matte finish on my Milwaukee is easier to read with much less light reflection.  In some circumstances, the coating actually generates a glare, (left pic, around 10-inch mark) making it a bit harder to read.

Something also about the IRWIN Tape Measures: between IRWIN and several competitors in our inventory, IRWIN Tape Measures are the only ones that feature dual-side markings.  Every other tape measure offers numeric markings on only the top side of the tape.  Once we saw this, it was immediately asked why all tape measures aren’t two-sided.  Such a feature takes away nothing and adds versatility.  The penalty point enacted for over-glossing is given back in light of IRWIN’s dual-side measuring feature.

IRWIN Tape Measure Performance

We have examined and tested the IRWIN Tape Measure under short and long-distance measurement requirements.  As a result, I can say that the IRWIN Tape Measure clocks in as a smooth, strong, and easy-to-retract tape measure.  Though it does have areas for improvement – mainly the glossy finish glare – this is a decent brand of tape measure to consider.

IRWIN Tape Measure Value

The IRWIN Tape Measure is in line with other professional tapes of a similar range.  The tapes are priced as shown below at Lowes:

IRWIN Tape Measure Wrap Up

After considerable analysis, we can say that IRWIN did a nice job of making respectable tape measures.  IRWIN nailed most of the key aspects of what you would want in a tape. And has a few bonus features like the oversized hook, and two-sided readability.

When it comes to LDMs (Laser Distance Measurer), Bosch is at the forefront.  They are known for having some of the best LDMs on the market.  In fact, some might say they have too many in their lineup.  But with such a broad selection, you’re almost guaranteed to find the perfect LDM for your specific application. So let’s jump into the Bosch Blaze Green LDM.

Bosch Blaze Overview

Bosch is one of my favorite power tool manufacturers.  While they are not always first to market, they offer some of the toughest tools around.  The LDMs are no different.  They are easy to use, reliable, and accurate.  Most LDMs use a red dot.  Here is where Bosch adds a flair to their system and uses a green dot.  A green dot is more expensive to produce but is easier to see.

Bosch Blaze Features

Bosch Blaze

The Bosch GLM165-27CG is designed to measure up to 165′. And according to Bosch it “uses green-beam technology, which generates a point/dot up to 4X brighter than standard red beams.” This LDM also provides accuracy up to 1/16″ and has an IP 65 rating.

One cool feature is you can use either the provided rechargeable battery pack or 2-AA batteries.  This is very helpful because we all know that when we need it the most, we forgot to charge the batteries.

Bosch Blaze

I love the push-button front panel.  Very easy to read, has responsive buttons, and is simple.

Bosch Blaze

The screen is large and easy to read even in brighter environments.

Bosch Blaze

The LDM comes with rechargeable batteries and a charging cable  It also comes with a protective case.

Bosch Blaze

Scrolling through all the options is easy and intuitive.

Bosch Blaze

On the back is where you can change the batteries or attach the LDM to a tripod.

Bosch Blaze Performance

Bosch Blaze

I have used a lot of different LDMs over the years.  This is by far the best one I have used.  Yes, it’s easy to read and see the green dot, but what I like best is the simplicity of the tool.  Taking a measurement is easy, but using the buttons and navigation is by far the best.  Sometimes these LDMs have too many buttons and too many features which can make them frustrating.  This one is easy to use and easy to navigate and why I think it is the best on the market.

Bosch Blaze

While I love this tool, I do have issues.  First, not everything fits in the case which is a little annoying.  I would like to have everything together and not all over the place because I know I will misplace something.  Second, which isn’t a deal-breaker, I wish they had a button on the side to take measurements and just not on the front.  Sometimes having a button on the side is easier because of how you are taking a reading

One note is on their site some people have complained they have had bad units. So I checked in with a couple of other users I know and they’ve had no issues with theirs.  And so far mine has worked great.

Bosch Blaze Value

You can pick this up at Lowe’s or The Home Depot for about $170.  For me, it’s simple, accurate, and easy to use so it’s a good value.  Plus it’s Bosch so you can be confident it will last.

Bosch Blaze Wrap Up

Bottom line, this is my favorite LDM on the market for ease of use, and reliability, and it does everything I need without all the cumbersome features.  If you are looking for a great LDM, this Bosch is your best choice and for $170, it can’t be beaten.

As a homeowner what do you use to hang pictures, curtain rods or general household projects? Do you eyeball it or use a level?  Have you ever thought about using a self-leveling line laser?  I know it may sound like big bucks to invest in one but Skil has an inexpensive unit that will work up to 50′ and is extremely accurate.  So let’s take a look at the Skil Cross line laser and see if this is something that can make your tasks around the house easier.

Skil Cross Line Laser Information

  • Name – Skil Self-Leveling Red Cross Line Laser
  • Model – LL932301
  • Price – $58
  • Where to BuyAmazon

Skil Cross Line Laser Features

Skil Cross Line Laser

The Skil laser can project a red vertical and horizontal line up to 50′ away which makes this great for a variety of applications such as molding, pictures, cabinets and more.

Skil Cross Line Laser

The laser comes with the laser, pouch, clamp and charging cable.

Skil Cross Line Laser

The tool is powered by a rechargeable battery, in which the cord is included.  There are pros and cons to this setup.  I love not having to spend money on batteries but at the same time, if I forget to charge it, I have to wait a little while to charge the unit before I can use it.

Skil Cross Line Laser

On top of the unit, you can see the battery status and a red arrow if the laser is not level.

Skil Cross Line Laser

To turn on the laser there is a slide switch to turn it on.  The only option is either off or on.  When the laser is on, then it’s auto-leveling.

Skil Cross Line Laser

On the bottom of the laser, there are pads that help protect the surface you set it on. There is also thread on the bottom and top if you want to use the laser with a tripod.

Skil Cross Line Laser

The case isn’t too bad.  I wish it was a little bigger so the unit and the charging cord fit in nicely.  Both fit in the case but it’s a little snug.

Skil Cross Line Laser Impressions

For a $60 dollar laser, I was surprised how bright the laser line is.  In the past, we have seen some laser lines around this price tag but they don’t have the brightness of this laser.

What I love about this laser is simplicity.  Just turn it on and go.  If it’s flashing, it’s not level otherwise you are good to go.

One nice feature is if the laser is out of level, the lines will flash to alert you that you need to adjust the laser level.

The included clamp is a nice feature because we all know that you don’t always have a flat surface to set the laser on.  With the clamp, you can pretty much set up any contraption to get the line wherever you need it.

Skil Cross Line Laser Wrap Up

The bottom line, for a homeowner this is a great unit.  You get the range of professional lasers but without the hefty price tag.  The laser feels like a quality laser and one that will last for years to come. For a homeowner, this is a great option to have around the house in case those applications arise and this even makes a great gift idea for a new homeowner or someone who needs a laser line.

I have been working on my house for the last year and the one tool myself or another carpenter or tradesmen rely on is their square.  The framing square is a multi-tool that is a must-have.  You can figure out angles, create straight lines for cutting, use it for a cutting guide and so many more uses for this handly little tool.  There are a lot of framing squares to pick from but for me, I want a metal square.  A plastic square works just the same but I like the durability of metal.  Which brings me to the Milwaukee 7″ Rafter Square

Milwaukee 7″ Rafter Square – Information

Milwaukee 7″ Rafter Square – Features

The Milwaukee 7″ Rafter Square not only looks cool with the red and white contrast but it has some very practical and time-saving features.

  • Scribe notches from 1″-6″ for easy lumber ripping
  • 1″ cutout props pipe for easy cutout
  • 3 rare earth magnetics
  • Machined extruded aluiminum
  • Reinforced frame for durability
  • Etched marketing for high visiability
  • 1-1/8″ heel

Milwaukee 7″ Rafter Square – Our Thoughts

As I noted earlier, I have come to rely on my framing square for so many applications.  While this size square isn’t very heavy, I do like the aluminum build as it does lightening up the weight and gives it a nice feel.  Second, I love how easy it is to read the numbers.  My current square is all one color, gray.  Sometimes the all gray is very hard to read.  So the Milwaukee brings a nice contrast.

I also like the magnetics as they are very stron.  I don’t do much in plumbing or electrical but it’s a nice feature to have.  The same goes for the 1″ pipe cutout.  I don’t use that but can see where it could come in extremly handy for an electrician.

Milwaukee 7″ Rafter Square – Wrap Up

I know a square isn’t a sexy tool but it is a must have tool for the trades.  The red and white contrast gives it a nice added feature that not many other squares offer.  Not sure why more companies don’t offer a multi color square.  Overall, I like the square.  I wouldn’t run out and trade up to this square but if I needed a square, this would be my go to option.

A tape measure is one of the basic tools that anyone in the trades needs.  Let’s just say it’s a staple to the professional as well as the homeowner.  While LDM’s have come a long way, a tape measure is simple, easy to use and a must-have.  Which brings me to the Crescent Lufkin Tape Measure.

Anyone in the trades has seen a huge price increase in tape measures over the years.  Some for good reason and some for marketing purposes.  A tape measure takes a beating over its lifetime.  They are dropped, scratched, used as hammers and more.  So it’s extremely important that a tape measure can take the daily beating of the tradesman.  While I have seen a lot of fails over the years, I have found a couple that really stand out and are high quality and worth the money, such as these Crescent Lufkin Tape Measure.

Crescent Lufkin Tape Measure – Information

Standard Tape

  • Name – Crescent Lufkin SHOCKFORCE 25-ft Tape Measure
  • Model – L1125
  • Price – $27.98
  • Where to BuyLowes

Nite Eye Tape

  • Name – Crescent Lufkin SHOCKFORCE NITE EYE 25-ft Tape Measure
  • Model – L1125B
  • Price – $29.98
  • Where to BuyLowes

There are several options for Lufkin Tape Measures on Amazon as well.

Crescent Lufkin Tape Measure – Features

Crescent Lufkin has two tapes in this size and style, your traditional tape and the Nite Eye.  Both feature the same size, style, and features except the Nite Eye has a darker contrast made for darker areas.

Lufkin Tape Measure

The tapes are extremely easy to read and both have a great contrast from the numbers and lines to the background color. Both tapes offer a 14′ stand out. Crescent Lukin also prints the numbers on both sides which is a handy feature.

The blade is matte nylon which provides durability and less glare.

Lufkin Tape Measure

The locking mechanism is large, smooth, easy to work with and adjust.

Lufkin Tape Measure

When tapes are dropped, most of the time they are dropped on their locking mechanism causing damage.  Crescent Lufkin designed these with two bars that protect this locking mechanism and offers drop protection of up to 100′.

Lufkin Tape Measure

Crescent Lufkin features a diamond coated end hook to help prevent slippage.

Lufkin Tape Measure

The belt clip is large.  While I would like to see a simple bar outline with no center as I feel that those are easier to clip and unclip, I do like how large this clip is on the side of the tape.

Lufkin Tape Measure

The tape features a center point to allow you to have a nail and draw circles, half circles and more.

Lufkin Tape Measure

One of the best features is the tape measures 3″.  I am not sure why no one has done this in the past.  Why not make it a whole number so it’s easier to add and subtract on the job site.  One of the tapes I use is 3-3/8″.  It’s always time-consuming when I had to add that to another measurement that isn’t a whole number.  Thank you, Crescent Lufkin.

Crescent Lufkin Tape Measure – Impressions

The first thing I noticed was the quality of this tape.  Have you ever picked up a tape and right away, you know the build quality isn’t there.  With the Crescent Lufkin, it’s solid, smooth operating and just feels very nice.

Another thing I noticed, the 25′ tape doesn’t seem to be as big as other 25′ tape measures which is awesome.  I love the smaller footprint.

I know a tape measure isn’t sexy, but since it’s a staple in our lives, you want something that is tough, easy to read and makes your life easier, all of which I feel the Crescent Lufkin accomplishes.

Crescent Lufkin Tape Measure – Wrap Up

The Crescent Lufkin is my new favorite tape.  I love the quality, the size, and the easy read.  I was always a fan of the Milwaukee 16′ tape but there were times I needed a larger measurement.  I just never wanted the 25′ tape as it was larger in my tool belt.  The Crescent Lufkin now gives me everything I need.  I get the 25′ tape with a footprint of a 16′ tape.

A rafter square is a measuring tool that every carpenter carries around with them.  Most guys carry the 6″ but there are times you need a 12″ square for larger pieces of wood.  However, it stinks carrying around two squares or even carrying around the larger square as it takes up more room and can get in the way.  So what is a carpenter suppose to do?  Well, Husky has a pretty cool invention that takes care of this problem, the Husky Extendable Square which is a 2-in-1 square.

The square is a 6″ square for your common applications.  However, if you need a larger square, it will expand into a 12″ square.  So for those who rely on the 6″ square but need a larger square occasionally, this is a great addition.

Husky Extendable Square – Infomation

Husky Extendable Square – Features

The Husky 2-in-1 is a unique rafter square that allows you to take longer measurements without changing the overall footprint of the tool.

  • Foldable arm turns 6″ square into a 12″ square
  • Arm securely folds shut for compact tool belt storage
  • Laser marked notches
  • Aluminum Construction
  • Lifetime Warranty

Husky Extendable Square – First Impressions

Taking it out of the package, you can feel the weight, it;’s solid and not some flimsy piece of junk.  I like how easy it is to read the white lettering on the black background.  I do wish the silver foldable arm was easy to read.  It’s a little hard to read since it’s all one color.

The arm is easy to open and close.  One worry I had was how well the arm lined up with the square.  After checking it, it lines up perfectly.  After digging a little deeper, I found out that they put the arm on the square and then cut it down to size to get a true line for every square.  When the arm is open, there is enough resistance in case you want the arm standing up or at a different angle.

In regards to the arm and hinge, they seem very solid.  When the arm is closed, there are three small balls that hold it securely against the square.  I can’t speak for long term use, but the hinge also seems well laid out and solid.  Doesn’t look like any part is exposed and would cause the hinge to break, which is a plus.

Husky Extendable Square – Wrap Up

Overall, I love this square.  It’s nice having a smaller square with larger capabilities.  While I do wish the silver foldable arm was easier to read, the tradeoff is worth it.  The quality of the square is solid and not like some of the cheap squares we have seen over the years.

Who do you think of when you hear line lasers?  Well, I am pretty sure most of you think Bosch and that is for a good reason.  I know I sound like a broken record over the years always talking about how great Bosch line lasers are, but it’s for a very good reason.  They earned it by building one of the most durable, most accurate and one of the largest lines of line lasers.  So when it comes to line lasers, it’s hard to deviate from someone who has been a top performer all while keeping the prices reasonable. Last week we took a look at the Bosch GLL 100 G.  If that is a little too pricey for you, the GLL 50 is a great alternative and about $80 cheaper.

Bosch GLL 50 Laser Line – Information

Bosch GLL 50 Laser Line – Features

While the Bosch is simple and easy to use, there are a lot more features to the GLL 50.

  • 3 Red Lines – vertical, horizontal and cross lines
  • Accuracy of ±1/8 in @ 33 ft
  • Self-Leveling up to 4°
  • Thread Mounting – 1/4-20, 5/8-11
  • Range up to 50 ft.
  • VisiMax – Easier to see the line and longer run times.
  • Pendulum locks when the laser is turned off
  • Simple operation
  • IP54 rating

Bosch GLL 50 Laser Line – Impressions

So from my experience with this and other Bosch lasers, I have no complaints.  The laser is easy to use, the batteries last a long time, the price is right and it’s built tough.  What else could you want in a laser?  For me, like the GLL 100, I do wish there was a hard case included.  Not a deal-breaker, but it would be nice.

I have used Bosch over the years for so many projects and they always perform.  From the framing of my attic to installing tile in my bathroom to installing can lights in my house and so many other projects. Time and time again, Bosch has proven to me that they work.

Bosch GLL 50 Laser Line – Wrap Up

As I said earlier, I am a huge fan of Bosch lasers.  Look around and talk with other people in the trades and I am sure, time and time again, you will get the same feedback.  They are accurate, dependable and reasonably priced.  So in the end, what is there not to like about the GLL 50?  It’s a great tool to own in your arsenal.

When you think of a framing square, what tool manufacturers do you think of?  Do you think Johnson, Empire, Swanson?  You might think of them or someone else, but I am sure Milwaukee isn’t the first company you think of.  Well, that is about to change.  Milwaukee jumped into this segment and the one thing you can count on from Milwaukee when they enter a segment, they enter to dominate.  They want to add innovation, let’s just say, build a better mousetrap.  Now I am not saying this framing square is going to blow you out of the water, I am just saying this is another cool to market tool from Milwaukee.

Milwaukee Framing Square – Information

Milwaukee Framing Square – Features

Some of the features to the Milwaukee framing square are as follows:

  • Aluminum design
  • 50% thicker frame compared to competitors
  • Scribe notches from 1″ to 13″
  • High visibility markings
  • Angle finding markings
  • 8th, 10th, 12th, and 16th graduation marks
  • Made in the USA

Milwaukee Framing Square – Impressions

Looking at this framing square compared to another, you not might see much of a difference and think this is just like the other one sitting next to it on the shelf.  After looking into this square a little deeper, there are noticeable differences such as the square just being built better.  The thickness of the square means it’s more durable and can take more of a beating.

Personally, I like how easy it is to read the markings.  The white on red stands out very nice and you can quickly see a reading.  I also like the quick angle markings.  When I am comparing this side by side with a Johnson square, the Milwaukee is thicker which means it should last longer.

Milwaukee Framing Square – Wrap Up

I know a framing square isn’t the most exciting product to talk about but for those who need a framing square, the Milwaukee MLSQ024 is a great option.  Easy to read, great markings and nice quick measurement guides.

Bosch is known for a lot of things but one thing they are known for and excel at is their laser lines.  Not only do they have a wide range of products, but they are some of the highest quality products on the market.  If you are a tradesman who depends and relies on making sure your work is straight, then you know how important it is to have a high-quality laser line.  For some of you, I am preaching to the choir and already have had a great experience with Bosch, so let’s take a look at the Bosch GLL 100 G.

Bosch GLL 100 G Laser Line – Information

Bosch GLL 100 G Laser Line – Features

A green laser is easier on the eyes and easier to see, but the green beam is only one feature of this laser.

  • Accuracy – +/-1/8 in at 33 ft
  • Projects vertical, horizontal and cross lines
  • Range – Up to 100-ft.
  • Self-Leveling, Up to 4°
  • Mounting Thread – 1/4-20, 5/8-11
  • VisaMax – Provides maximum line visibility while making the batteries run longer
  • Smart Pendulum System – Self-leveling and indicates an out-of-level condition
  • The pendulum is locked when the unit is turned off
  • BM3 Positioning Device which allows for micro height adjustments
  • IP54 rating
  • Powered by 3 AA batteries which are included

Bosch GLL 100 G Laser Line – Impressions

If you have been following us for a while, then it’s not news to you how much I love Bosch lasers.  I love the accuracy, the dependability, the build quality, and the price.  The GLL 100 is just another example of why Bosch is the leader in the laser line field.  The laser line is easy to use, easy to set up and even comes with a grid clip.

While I do love the laser, I wish it came with a hard case.  Yes, I like the soft case but with lasers, I always prefer a hard case.  Even if I had to spend another $20, it would be worth it.  Other than a case, I really have nothing to complain about as this laser does exactly what Bosch claims it does.

Bosch GLL 100 G Laser Line – Wrap Up

Bottom line, when it comes to lasers, Bosch is king.  They offer a wide range of options, they are built to last and they are reasonably priced.  I have been using their lasers for a long time including my most recent house project and it comes in so handy.  I would recommend the GLL 100 G Green laser.  The green line is easy to see, priced decent and is quality.

What is your favorite level?  One thing is for sure, I am sure some will say Milwaukee which is weird because they are new to this space and ten years ago, the Milwaukee name would have never crossed your mind.  Lately, Milwaukee is hitting every category in the tool world including the measuring segment.  So today we are talking about one of their new releases, the digital level.  So let’s take a look at the Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review.

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review Overview

The world is level, well not really but as far as our brains are concerned, we need things to be level and straight for us to function.  Think about the level things around you, your desk, the picture, the bed, and the list goes on and on.  In fact, our brains are so well trained that if something is out of level, it stands out.  Think about a sidewalk, a road or a wall.  When it comes to working with and depending upon things being straight, a carpenter is one of those professions that need a straight finished product.  However, throughout their day, they are dealing with things that aren’t straight and trying to make them straight.

Which brings me to one of their critical tools, a level.  A level is an extremely old and ancient hand tool that has been around for thousands of years.  While they have changed over the course of their life, the concept is the same.  One new feature to levels is a digital level and that is where the Milwaukee PinPoint level comes into play.  While they weren’t the first to market with their digital level, they have built on for the trades that are designed for accuracy and durability, plus ease of use.

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review Features

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review

The level is a 24″ level, model number MLDIG24.  According to Milwaukee, this has accuracy 2 times better than other digital levels. The level has an IP65 rating making it perfect for the jobsite.

The level is powered by a Milwaukee 4V battery which is rechargeable.

Just plug in the included power cord and you can charge the battery.  The plug is located on the back of the level.

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review

The digital level is extremely easy to read as it has a nice large display and a great contrast from the background to the forefront number. When a measurement is found, it lights up and you can even set audible tones.

Same for the top.  You can see a reading from the top-down and the contract of the black and white makes it easy to read.

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review

The rubber bumpers protect each end from drops.  One great feature is how easy they are to remove in case you need to get in a corner.  Plus they lock into place when you need them and you can be assured they won’t fall off.

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review

Both sides of the level feature a very smooth and straight finish.

Milwaukee includes a storage bag to protect the level when not in use.

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review Performance

This is one of the easiest digital levels we have tested.  The menu is well laid out and easy to navigate.  You can pretty much-set anything on this level in under 10 seconds.

I love how easy it is to read from the side or above.  The contrast is nice and easy on the eyes in light or dark areas.

For me, the durability and accuracy say it all.  The level is built like the other Milwaukee levels, tough.

I do wish their were some vial on the level in case the battery dies.  Once the battery dies, the level is useless until you change batteries.

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review Value

You can pick this level up at The Home Depot for about $270.  Yes, $270 for a 24″ level.  For some, the money is worth it for what you get.  However, that is a big chunk to swallow for a 24″ level.  I would have been more excited to see it priced around the $100 mark.

Milwaukee PinPoint Level Review Final Thoughts

Overall this is a great level.  The level is easy to read and easy to use.  Most importantly, the level is accurate and durable for the job site.  My question is, how many contractors are ready to dump $270 into a level.  Sure, there are plenty of applications and jobs where you really need to dial down the accuracy and I understand spending that much money.  What do you think?  Is this level too high priced or a perfect solution for those jobs? You can check out the Milwaukee page to learn more about this level.

When it comes to line lasers, Bosch is one of the leaders in the industry.  They are known for their accurate and high-quality lasers.  While some power tool manufacturers use cheap diodes, Bosch uses some of the best.  Their lasers are designed for the job site which means they are designed to take the daily abuse.  So how does the Bosch fair to what we expect from the Bosch lasers?  Let’s find out and dip into the Bosch Green Line Laser Review.

Overview

Now before we jump in, you might be asking yourself, doesn’t Bosch have a wide range of line lasers and didn’t you review the GGL 30 which is pretty much the same laser.  So the answer to the question is yes and no.

Yes, Bosch does have a wide range of line lasers.  The reason is they want to cater to a wide range of users. Some trades only need a single line while others might need a 360-degree line, plus plumb marks.  Some like red lasers and others want green.  So yes, they do offer a wide range of lasers so you can buy the exact one that fits your needs.

Is this the same as the GGL 30.  While they are similar, they do have differences so let’s take a look at the Bosch GLL40-20G.

Features

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewThe Bosch GLL40-20G has a working range of up to 40′ with an accuracy of ±5/16″ at 30′. The Bosch has VISIMAX technology which means it monitor power consumption and tool temperature to maximize line visibility while extending battery life.

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewThe GLL40-20G comes with the following items:

  • GLL40-20G Green-Beam Self-Leveling Cross-Line Laser
  • MM 2 Flexible Mounting Device
  • Pouch
  • 2 – AA Batteries

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewThe laser offers two green lines, horizontal and vertical. Green lines are about 4X brighter than red lines.

The laser has a smart pendulum system which means it will self-level and will indicate if out of level.

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewWhile some of their lasers are powered by their 12V battery platform, the GLL40 is powered by two included AA batteries.

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewAll around the laser, there is rubber overmold that helps protect the housing and laser from drops and bumps.

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewOn the bottom of the laser, there is a 1/4-20 mounting thread.

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewThe pouch not only offers storage and protection when not in uses, but you can also attach it to your belt for easy access.

Performance

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewI have to say, it doesn’t get any easier.  Just slide the switch on and start working with your line.  There really isn’t much to this laser.  It’s simple and straight forward.

We have used green laser lines over the last couple of years.  I have been using one on my house project.  For me, the green is much easier to see.  If the line is on a dark or light color, it’s easy to see.

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewThis is from about 35′ away.  While it might be hard to see in the picture, I can easily see it with my eyes.

Bosch Green Line Laser ReviewThe flexible mounting bracket provides rotating 360-degree neck and is very easy and quick to set up.  I like how you can use this on any surface from 1/2″ to 2-1/4″ thick.

Value

The Bosch GLL40-20G retails for about $130 at The Home Depot.  Here is the deal.  You can get lasers for less and certainly for more.  A red line will cost far less but also less visible.  For a green line laser and the quality of Bosch, the $130 price tag is certainly a fair price.  If you depend upon laser on the job site, this is the way to go and worth the price.

Bosch Green Line Laser Review Final Thoughts

Overall, I am a huge fan of Bosch. I have used them on job sites and seen plenty of times where Bosch lasers have fallen or been dropped.  While they still work, they seem to take a beating and still be accurate.  While the green line is more money, it’s worth the extra cost if you are in the trades and need visibility.

A laser is one of those tools that everyone has in their tool arsenal.  You can use it from laying out a building to laying out a wall for tile and everything in between.  Having straight lines is key for any project and that is where a laser shines.

That is also where Bosch shines.  They are known for their quality lasers that are made for the job site. Bosch has been in the business for a long time and they know how important a quality and accurate laser can be.  So when you look at their line of lasers, you will see anything from a simpler line laser to a full 360° laser.  The GCL100-80C is in-between.  This is a cross-line with plumb points.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review Features

Bosch GCL100-80C Review

The Bosch GCL100-80C comes with the laser, 12V battery, charger, pouch, mount and case. The laser has an accuracy of ±1/8″ at 30′ and points of ±9/32 at 30′. The laser will work up to 100′.

The laser is built with Visimax which makes the line crisper and brighter all while consuming less power which means longer run times.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review

The Bosch is powered by a 12V rechargeable battery.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review

To turn the laser on, just move the red slide bar.  This will allow you to lock the lasers or use the self-leveling mode which will work up to 4°.  The tool uses a smart pendulum system.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review

The whole housing is protected with a rubber/plastic over-mold.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review

On top of the laser, you can adjust the lines and points, plus see the battery status.  You can also use this laser with the Bosch app, making your life easier. If you have a receiver, you can even set this to pulse mode so your receiver will pick up the laser. In pulse mode, you will get an additional 65′ which brings it up to a total of 165′.

Once the laser is on, you can adjust the laser to show a vertical, horizontal and point all at the same time or just a vertical, horizontal or points.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review

On the bottom of the laser, there is a 1/4-20 mounting thread for tripods.

The mount is a nice feature.  The magnetic rotating mount will rotate the laser 360 degrees while staying center on the plumb points.  The ceiling grip clip makes laying out ceilings much easier.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review Performance

While there is a lot to a laser, two big factors are toughness and most importantly, the ability to see the lines.  It’s very hard to get this point across in an article since you are looking at pictures, but I can easily see the line on either a light or dark background.  I am sure the green laser is even better, but it does come at a higher cost.

As with the lines, the plumb can be seen even on a 16′ ceiling or concrete floor.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review Value

When it comes to Bosch lasers, I trust them.  This one retails for about $280 on Amazon.  Yes, it does have a high price tag for a cross-line laser but I think it’s worth every penny.  They are tough and accurate.  So if you are looking for a laser made for the job site, this is the way to go.  If you want to spend a little less and don’t need the plumb, Bosch does offer a cross-line for less.

Bosch GCL100-80C Review Final Thoughts

Bottom line, I love Bosch lasers and the GCL100-80C isn’t any different.  While I wish this came with two batteries, it’s really the only thing I can fault this tool for.  The rest of this tool is built around a quality body and internal workings.  So if you are in the trades and you need a cross-line with plumb, take a look at this laser.  Let us know your thoughts.  Do you like Bosch lasers?  Have you had experience with this laser?

If you haven’t heard of the company FastCap yet, let me give you a little background. It will help you understand why they make the tools that they make and then we can jump into the FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review.

FastCap is a tool company that was started by Paul Akers. Paul is a cabinet builder with over 20 years of experience.

Throughout the process of starting up a new company and the growing pains that go along with it, Paul learned a very important way to approach not just business, but life as well. Without going into too much detail, he was introduced to and became a believer in the LEAN process for manufacturing. He was then able to take the very most basic principle of LEAN and incorporated it into everything he does.

At its very core, the Lean process is about finding waste and eliminating it.  You can talk about all of the special charts and processes of Lean, but in the end, it’s about eliminating waste (wasted time, motion, material, etc.). FastCap is basically built on that core fundamental idea. They produce tools and other items that reduce waste, in return it reduces frustration which in turn, makes the user more productive.

Once I heard Paul talk about the process of recognizing and reducing waste, I realized I had kind of been doing this all along, but on a much smaller scale. So, now when I’m in my shop or working on some kind of project, I’m always looking for things that irritate me and once I find them, I try to eliminate them.  I’ve come to the point, whenever I am able to make one of these changes, I get pretty excited.

Once you know how Paul, his company FastCap, and his employees think, you will be able to recognize the little things that go into each of their products.

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review Overview

Tape measures have been around for a very long time and are a primary tool for just about any job. Over the past 20 years, the biggest improvements and innovations for tapes have been wider blades, larger hooks, different styles of thumb locks, and stronger cases. Not really innovative if you ask me.

FastCap didn’t try to go the same route when adding innovation to tape measures. They were able to recognize the need for tape measures to fit particular tasks and styles of work. So, instead of offering one tape measure in different sizes, they have several tapes to fit the user’s needs best (available on Amazon). They have also taken the time to address some issues around tape measures that can slow down the process of using one.

Today, we are going to take a look at one particular tape measure created by FastCap. This tape is called the FastCap ProCarpenter Easy Half Tape Measure.

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review Features

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review 9

The tape’s blade is colored white with black lettering which makes it easy to read and has marks down to 1/16”. The blade has two scales which are divided right down the middle. One side has the actual measurement in inches.  On the other side is the one-half scale. This is used to easily find a center point of what you are measuring.

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review 8

The blade hook is held onto the blade with 4 rivets.

The tape case has a large white circle right in the middle of the tape where brands usually put their logo.  The white circle was put and left blank for a reason. It is there so that when you have notes or measurements you need to remember, you can write it right in the white circle with your pencil. After you no longer need this information, you can wipe it off with your thumb or pencil eraser. This is standard on every tape that FastCap produces.

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review 1

Another feature that is found on all of the FastCap tapes is an onboard pencil sharpener. Broken pencil leads can be frustrating and cause wasted time. To reduce downtime if you break a pencil point during your work, you can fix it as you go.

The tape has a standard thumb lock, an index finger lock, and a belt clip. The FastCap Easy Half Tape has a nice heavy-duty rubberized case to protect the tape.

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review Performance

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review 10

This tape does exactly what it is advertised to do and does it well. When you are reading the full-scale measurement, you can quickly see what the half-scale is. The entire blade is marked out in inches. There are no feet marks to deal with. Instead of seeing 2-feet 2-1/8 inches, you will see 26-1/8” on the full scale, and on the half-scale; you will see 13-1/16”. It keeps the math extremely simple.

The only improvement I would make on this tape would be to color code the blade. I would leave the full-scale white and then change the half-scale blade color to yellow or some other high-visibility color. This won’t change the workings of the tape at all; just make identifying the full and half scale a little easier.

The white circle writing surface works nicely. Pencils mark on it clearly and cleaning up the surface can be done without cleaning agents. I usually use an eraser and then wipe it down with my thumb.

The thumb and finger locks work as they should.

The rubber case is a nice size. I’m not a big fan of the extremely large-size case most of the major tool makers have gone to. If I want to carry a tape measure in my pocket, the large cases make it more cumbersome than it should be.

I’ve had some mixed results with the pencil sharpeners found on the FastCap tapes. They aren’t perfect, but they are useful in a pinch.

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review Value

The FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure isn’t what I would consider an everyday tape measure, so don’t expect this unit to replace every tape you already own. Where this tape excels is in tasks where you need to find the center of an item quickly. I use this tape a lot in my woodworking projects. When I’m making mission-style tables, I need to find the center point to line up my stiles. This tape reduces any chance of error I could make doing the math.

So, with a price point of $9.63 on the FastCap website, the tape is cheaper than most day-to-day tapes and I feel is priced right where it should be.

There are several FastCap measuring products available on Amazon as well.

FastCap Easy Half Tape Measure Review Final Thoughts

FastCap is a company that tends to recognize needs and finds a way to fill them. Their ProCarpenter Easy Half Tape measure is one of their products that originate from a need.

The Easy Half Tape measure isn’t going to be my everyday tape measure, but it is one of the tools in my arsenal that is going to be there to make my work process easier and hopefully error free.

When it comes to the much-needed precision in construction you have a lot of options to consider on the market in terms of measurements. While advances in Laser Distance Measurers have made a lot of users feel that tape measures are all but obsolete, there are still occasions when traditional methods reign supreme. One such is framing, as well as Woodworking and Carpentry, where human precision and tools like the ones we will talk about today, are relied on heavily to give superior results. Alas, the tools we use still remain important in these practices and today we will check out a few new products from Empire. How can they improve Rafter Squares or Combination Squares? Well, let’s find out how the latest round of updates impacted the classic tools in the Empire Squares Review.

Empire Squares Review Overview

Empire Level has been around for a long time since 1919 to be exact. If a manufacturer can make it through the economic downturns like Empire has endured in its 100 years, you know they must be doing something right. Empire was founded on the basis of providing layout and measurement tools for the tradesmen who used them day in and day out. Their levels are iconic and can be found in pretty much any home, and on virtually any job site.

Today, the Power Tool giant Milwaukee owns Empire Level in a deal that surprised more than a few fans in 2014. To be honest, though it’s really a perfect marriage of two companies that focus on quality tools, with both professional tool staples and innovations that make our well-loved tools just that much better.

Empire Square Features

Empire Squares Review Performance

Okay, guys, things may get a bit weird here. I have a little bit of a love affair with these squares, and I am not kidding even a little bit. Not only are these squares aesthetically pleasing to look at, but their attraction also continues in their high visibility markings. My previous rafter squares were plastic and fairly difficult to read, even for someone like me who has had eye surgery (PRK) and can see on par with pilots. Empire knocked their new laser engraved markings out of the visibility park and made me wonder how I ever did without them.

Now, another HUGE thing for me on these squares over previous ones I have used are the SCRIBE-GUIDES. I wish I could properly explain to you how much these notches in the square enhance their usability and accuracy. By allowing you to select the desired measurement and follow the heel along the edge of your material is a huge step forward in reducing human error. Without a doubt, this alone would be reason enough for me to recommend them as it is truly a feature that makes a job so much simpler.

I also appreciated the onboard conversion tables which allow a user to save a step in common measurements. These squares have incredibly build quality and are incredibly accurate based on my findings. I used several methods from other squares, a digital angle finder, a caliper and a good old-fashioned measuring tape to verify. I think in regards to performance, there just isn’t anything negative to say about these Rafter Squares.

So onto the Combination Squares. If I have lost you based on my inherent ability to find so much to love about the Rafter Squares, I am afraid you won’t find anything different here. The Combination Squares are a tool I would say pretty much every user will love. One feature for me that stood out was the onboard scriber pin which was practical in use. As well, the bubble vial was a real standout as it was accurate and provided incredible visibility to the user. Having markings that allow you to see even a 1 or 2-degree slope was incredibly useful and will improve a lot of precision in an array of users.

The combination Squares are built in every way, heavy duty. Where often times these can feel somewhat flimsy and by extension make you question their ability to perform, these models from Empire feel solid. The metal used on the heads is just thick enough to provide some weight and strength to the unit but is done in a way that seems to make sense. Combination Squares can also notoriously be awkward to use, but these just aren’t.

Empire Squares Review Value

Rafter Squares 7 inch (e2994) $10.97 and 12 inch (e3992) $19.97.

Combination Square- 6 inch(e255) is $8.97 12 inch (e250) is $10.97.

Here’s Empire’s full product selection on Amazon.

When looking at value for something where accuracy is key, you have an easy decision to make. With price points under 20 dollars, the Squares from Empire are all around a wonderful value. A Homeowner will see a lot of value in the ability to make simple functions like hanging photos, making cuts with a circular saw, or making simple angled cuts a lot more precise. I have used ones that are less expensive, but there are times when you have to pay a slightly higher price point to get the precision you get from these squares. As well, there is a slew of options that are multiples of this price point, so honestly, the Empire Squares are incredibly economic for their feature set.

Empire Squares Review Final Thoughts

I learned how to use a rafter square when I was probably 10. At the time, my Dad had been adding a home addition onto our house and seeing framing first hand was pretty cool for someone like me who had a natural aptitude for math and mechanics. So, when Empire announced that they were taking a tool like this and adding even more features that would make me love them all the more, I was eager to check them out. To say the least, these didn’t disappoint. These squares are accurate, feature packed and make your job easier. They come in at a great value for all users and are the type of tool you will be left wondering how you did without them.

A tape measure is one of those tools that is so simple and so necessary but often overlooked as being so important. If you have been following us for a while, you know I have been working on my house and doing a large remodeling project. While there are a lot of power tools I had a new appreciation for, a tape measure was at the front. When I started the project, I ended up going through a lot of tapes until I found a couple that I liked. So with that said, let’s take a look at the Milwaukee Tape Measure.

Milwaukee Tape Measure Overview

Milwaukee has a ton of different models of tapes on the market but two of my favorite tapes are the 25′ Stud Tape and the 16′ Compact Tape. Since we have covered the compact tape in a previous article, today we are going to focus on the Stud tape.

You would think a tape measure is a tape measure. For the homeowner that may be the case, but not for a professional. A professional tradesman relies heavily on their tapes for daily use. These tapes dropped, get exposed to various chemicals and the abuse goes on.  Take a walk around any job site I am sure you will see someone with a tape that still works, but some of the measurements have worn off. So for the professional, they need a tape that will take the abuse of a job site.

Milwaukee Tape Measure Features

Milwaukee Tape Measure

The Stud tape measure is not a standard tape measure. This tape measure is a fully encased reinforced frame for durability.

Milwaukee also added a rubber over-mold to not only help with added impact protection but also gives the user more grip.

On the side of the tape measure, there is a removable belt clip for those would use a pouch. You can not move the clip to the opposite side of the tape.

On the bottom of the tape, it indicates the overall length of the tape which is 3-3/4″ which makes it handy when measuring from the back of the tape.

The metal clip on the end is not only thick but also held to the tape using three rivets while most manufacturers use two rivets.

While the metal clip isn’t as wide as some of the other Milwaukee tapes, it is still easy to grab an object with the side of the clip.

Milwaukee uses a coating to protect the blade from rip and wear damage so the blade not only lasts longer but the measurements won’t wear off quickly like most tapes.

One cool feature is the finger stop. This allows you to hold the tape and have more control over when taking a measurement or letting the tape back into the housing.

Milwaukee Tape Measure Performance

I know there isn’t a lot to talk about when it comes to the performance of a tape measure but while using this during my house project, there were things that stood out to me.

First is the standout. Milwaukee states that this tape has a 10′ stand out. While it’s true and this does have a 10′ stand out, I did find you need very steady hands otherwise the tape bends easily at the 10′ mark. For me, this tape has an incredible stand out of 9′ without steady hands. There were plenty of times on a ladder or just trying to reach an area and I could easily get a 9′ reach with some shaking and moving around and the tape not bending.

While this tape a fatter than the compact tape, the size is still easy to work with. The tape not only fits nicely into your hand but also into your tape pouch on a belt. I have had other tapes that are bulky and it can be a pain trying to get them out of your tool pouch.

There are also plenty of tapes that are black and yellow but for some reason, I found this one easy to read in any light condition. In low light or very bright sunlight, this was easy to read with very little glare.

Most important was the toughness of this tape. While we did experience other tapes break over the project, the Stud tape held up throughout the job. The numbers stayed in tack and were easy to read and the case held up, even after a lot of drops.

Milwaukee Tape Measure Value

You can pick this tape up at the Home Depot for about $25. Sure, you can find tapes for cheaper but I think for the quality of this tape and my experience, it’s worth every penny.

I think the build quality is good. After numerous drops, the tape never broke and the numbers never wore off, which says a lot about the build quality.

Milwaukee Tape Measure Final Thoughts

I know there are a lot of tape measures on the market. While there are some great tapes out there, I have become a fan of the Milwaukee tapes for their durability and build quality.  While I am a huge fan of the Milwaukee compact tapes, I like this 25′ Stud tape. If you are looking for a quality tape that can take some abuse and is one of those tools that is priced right, I am confident you will like this also.
