You will rarely hear me complain about DeWALT. They manufacture outstanding products that are durable and reliable. My only complaint lately has been that they do not offer the variety of tools that some of their competitors do. So I was happy to see this DeWALT Cordless Compressor DCC2520 hit the market. I have reviewed several compressors over the years, and I have a Milwaukee cordless compressor. Let’s see if this DeWALT compressor will make me want to switch over.

DeWALT Cordless Compressor Overview

DeWALT’s previous cordless air compressors were part of their 20V tool line-up. This new, compact 2.5-gallon compressor can be used with any DeWALT 20V battery, but when powered by a DeWALT 20V/60V FlexVolt Advantage battery you’ll get maximum performance (81% more nails per cycle according to DeWALT). You’ll have enough cordless power to adequately run most of your pneumatic tools. This cordless compressor could be a productivity booster or at least a very convenient option for trim installers and finish carpenters.

DeWALT Cordless Compressor Features

Dewalt Cordless Compressor

The overall design offers great portability because first and foremost it’s cordless. I like that it is lightweight enough (21.5 lbs.) to easily move it around as needed. It is also pretty compact at 15.5H x 14L x 12.5D. But even with its compact size, the brushless .4 hp motor with its oil-free pump can deliver up to 140 psi with a 20V/60V FlexVolt battery. And while it is not the quietest compressor I’ve ever used, it is rated at 79 dBA, which isn’t bad.

The DeWALT 60V FlexVolt 2.5 gallon air compressor (DCC2560) is similar to this model but will only run with their 60V FlexVolt battery. As I mentioned above, this DeWALT Cordless Compressor (DCC2520) has more flexibility. It can run off of their standard 20V Li-Ion battery. But for peak performance, you’ll want to use a DeWALT 20V/60V FlexVolt battery.

Dewalt Cordless Compressor

I like that the controls are simple to read and use. The pressure gauge is easy to read on the front.  And the large, single-turn pressure dial makes it easy to adjust pressure.

Dewalt Cordless Compressor

The on/off switch is sealed and protected, but still easy to access.

Dewalt Cordless Compressor

The raised, top handle is part of the molded frame. It is high and wide making it easy to grab and carry the compressor to where you need it.

Dewalt Cordless Compressor

There is one hose coupler and it requires two hands to attach the hose. The sleeve does not stay retracted when there is no hose attached. So you’ll need one hand to push the sleeve back and the other to insert the hose. I much prefer the simpler, quick-connect style.

Dewalt Cordless Compressor

The DeWALT Cordless Compress has a standard ball type drain valve with a plastic lever.

Dewalt Cordless Compressor

I thought the molded frame “roll cage” was well designed. If you pull this over or material falls on it the controls, on/off switch, and battery should not make contact or be damaged.

Dewalt Cordless Compressor

The screwed-on rubber feet prevent the compressor from walking, or moving when filling it up.

DeWALT Cordless Compressor Performance

I like this little compressor. It is about 10 lbs. lighter than my Milwaukee (2840-20) and has a slightly smaller footprint. Even with its smaller size it still has a larger tank capacity; 2.5-gallon vs. Milwaukee’s 2.0-gallon tank. The Milwaukee claims 1.2 SCFM at 90 PSI and the DeWALT Cordless Compressor (DCC2520) claims 1.0 SCFM at the same 90 PSI. Max PSI is similar with the DeWALT being slightly higher: DeWALT at 140 and the Milwaukee at 135.

The two noticeable differences for me are the noise level and nails per charge. The Milwaukee noise level rating is 68 dB(a) and the DeWALT Cordless Compressor has a rating of 80 dB(a). I did not run this compressor through a full charge cycle but according to DeWALT you can get over 850 nails per charge when powered by their 20V/60V FlexVolt battery. Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL 2 Gallon Compressor claims to sink up to 1,600 nails per charge. That is a big difference.

DeWALT Cordless Compressor Value

When discussing Performance above, I mentioned two noticeable differences between the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 2 Gallon Compressor and the DeWALT 2.5 Gallon Compressor: noise level and nails per charge. Here’s the third big difference: price. Currently, at The Home Depot, the DeWALT Cordless Compressor (DCC2520) is $199 and the Milwaukee M18 FUEL is $319 ($349 reg.). Even if you are not already invested in the DeWALT 20V battery platform you can get this DeWALT Cordless Compressor plus battery and charger for under $300, so to me that is a pretty good value if this compressor fits your needs.

DeWALT Cordless Compressor Wrap Up

The compact DeWALT Cordless Compressor (DCC2520) is built to be powerful and portable, and it is.  The SCFM and max PSI are competitive when compared to other, similar cordless compressors on the market. I like that you can use a standard DeWALT 20V battery if that’s what you have, or you can also power it with the max-performing 20V/60V FlexVolt battery. Again, as I mentioned above, it is not the quietest cordless compressor I’ve used and the nails-per-charge is a little disappointing. However, the bare tool price of $199 makes it a great choice, especially if you are already invested in DeWALT’s 20V tools.

The Tank by Metabo HPT.  I think the name says it all, The Tank.  When it comes to running pneumatic tools, you need a great compressor.  You want something that doesn’t cost a lot, something that isn’t too heavy and you want something that offers power and versatility.  Well that is where The Tank comes into play

What makes The Tank so great is that it offers all that.  The unit is priced well, not extremely heavy, and has enough power to run multiple nailers.  So let’s jump in and take a look at The Tank.  Sorry, I can’t stop saying The Tank.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor – Information

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor – Features

When it comes to a pancake compressor Metabo didn’t hold back on power.  Not only is the power and the capacity top-notch, but Metabo HPT also added a couple of other cool features to this tank.

The Tank is a 200 PSi with 4 cfm @ 90 PSi.  The Tank is designed to power either 2 framing nailers, 2 roofing or siding nailers, 3 15Ga or 16Ga finish nailers, or 5 18 Ga Brad nailers. As you can see, this is a pancake system compressor and it only weighs 41 lbs., which isn’t bad for this type of compressor.  Normally to run these types of tools together, you would need a twin stack compressor and they are much heavier than 41 lbs.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

I like how Metabo HPT designed it with the gauges showing up so I can look down on the compressor and see the PSI and the regulated pressure PSI.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

The Tank has two built-in outlets so it’s already set up to run two tools.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

The large red knob in the front will allow the user to adjust the pressure to match the tool in use.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

On the bottom of the feet, there are rubber feet to help stop the walking and also keep the vibration noise lower.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

The compressor is designed with a ball turn value for easy emptying when finished for the day.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor

On top of the compressor, there is a metal handle to allow you to carry or lift the compressor.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor – Impressions

For me, The Tank is great.  I love the weight but I love power.  I love being able to run multiple nailers off one tank which means less noise, fewer power cords, and more freedom.  We could easily power two framing nailers with this single compressor.

Metabo HPT EC914S Compressor – Wrap Up

When we started this article, we agreed that with a compressor you want a compressor that doesn’t cost a lot, something that isn’t too heavy and you want something that offers power and versatility.  Well, that is where The Tank comes into play.  Lightweight, small, powerful, and all for a reasonable price.  So did Metabo hit a home run in your eyes?  In my opinion, they hit a home run with The Tank.

What do you think of when you think about compressors?  For me, I think heavy, noisy but a must-have for so many different reasons. You can use a compressor for your nailers, filling tires, running power tools and so much more.  Today we are going over something that is rather unique, the Milwaukee cordless compressor.  Yes, a cordless compressor.  You may be having some questions so let’s dive in and take a look at our Milwaukee Cordless Compressor review and see if this is something to invest in or stay away from.

Milwaukee Cordless Compressor Review Overview

I am sure when you first saw this title and what tool we were reviewing you might be asking yourself, why would anyone need a cordless compressor when power tool manufacturers are designing and marketing cordless nailers.  Sure that is the way the industry is going but there are still those tradesmen who want to stick with their pneumatic nailers.  They either love their nailers or don’t want to spend the money on upgrades.

There are also jobs where you might be nailing something in a tight area and since the pneumatic nailers are smaller, it’s easier to get in those tight areas. What about weight?  Cordless nailers tend to weigh more so if you are using the nailer all day, maybe you want something that is powerful but doesn’t weigh a lot.

Heck, just take the nailer out of the equation and there are plenty of items you would want a cordless compressor for.  What about keeping it on your truck?  There are plenty of jobs where you might not have power such as a mechanic who is on the road fixing vehicles and they need to fill up tires.  What about the maintenance person who needs it around the building for various duties.  Well, the list goes on and on so yes, while cordless nailers are getting more popular, there is still a use for small compressors like the Milwaukee cordless compressor.

Features

Milwaukee Cordless Compressor Review

The Milwaukee cordless compressor, model number 2840 is built around a brushless motor that delivers longer runtime and longer motor life.  What makes this compressor shine is how quiet this unit is when running.  Get this, this compressor only produces a 68 dBA which is extremely quiet and about the level of your normal voice during a conversation.

The compressor delivers 1.2 SCFM @ 90 psi which is perfect for brad nailing and even finish nailers. Milwaukee designed this compressor with an oil-free pump so there isn’t much maintenance needed for this tool.

The unit is powered off the Milwaukee M18 battery platform.  One great feature is how easy it is to access the battery for quick changes.  The battery is located right in the front making it easy.  The compressor will fire up to the following brad nails:

  • 1,600 brad nails with a 12Ah battery
  • 1,000 brad nails with a 8Ah battery
  • 600 brad nails with a 5Ah battery

The compressor is compact and protected by a cage.

Milwaukee Cordless Compressor Review

The compressor features a steel 2-gallon tank with a max of 135 max PSI.

Milwaukee Cordless Compressor Review

A user can bleed the tank when not in use by easily accessing the ball valve on the bottom back of the hot dog tank.

Milwaukee Cordless Compressor Review

The rubber handle makes it easy to carry around and doesn’t cause as much stress on your back compared to other compressors that have the handle on top.

The compressor weighs in at 31.25 lbs so not too bad for a professional compressor that is built tough.

The air hose inlet is located on the side of the compressor.  The compressor uses a quick connect system.  No need to pull back on the collet.  Just push in the hose and it will automatically lock into place.

Milwaukee Cordless Compressor Review

On the front of the compressor, the sealed on/off is located.  To me, this is a great feature as you don’t have to fumble around the back of the compressor looking for the lever like other compressors.

Milwaukee Cordless Compressor Review

One feature that is different than other compressors is how you regulate the pressure.  Normally you would use a dial and set your pressure.  When you set your pressure, you would see a clear glass with a needle to know where your pressure is set.  However, sometimes they are a little finicky.

Milwaukee removed this system and just implemented a dial set.  Just turn the dial to your desired pressure and you are set.  No more messing around and trying to move the regular up and down.  This is just a set and forget system.

The tank pressure still uses the needle system which is tried and true.  For me, I like the contrast with the black background and white number.

Performance

There are two features that make this compressor stand out, the noise level and the removal of the power cord.  If you look at just those two features, this compressor shines and hits every mark.  The compressor is extremely quiet and you get great run times for your finish or brad nailer.  So in that aspect, Milwaukee hit a home run.  However, there are other items we want to look at such as power and ease of use.

First, this compressor is extremely easy to transport.  The carrying handle makes it easy to move around and not kill your back.  When you pick this up, the weight is close to your body and you’re not fighting the weight with having it farther away from your body as you do with other compressors.

Second, the low profile is a great design as you can lay it in your back seat, or even if you have a truck cover, it’s not going to get in the way.

As far as ease of use, seriously, it can’t be any easier.  Just turn it on with the large sealed button in the front.  No bending around the back and trying to flip a switch.  Second, it’s easy to set your desired regulator.  Sure some will want a clear dial so they can see exactly the PSI but with the dial type Milwaukee went with, it’s easy to see where you want the PSI set.

So now let’s talk power.

The first thing I noticed was how quickly the tank fills.  We have used other compressors and it takes a while to fill.  The Milwaukee went from empty to full in about 1 minute and 49 seconds.  Not too bad for a cordless compressor.

Milwaukee claims you can shoot up to 1,600 18 gauge nails per charge (12 Ah battery).  Either way, that is a heck of a lot of nails per charge. But what I like most about this compressor, besides the noise level, is that I don’t see any issues with it keeping up with your workload of firing finish or brad nails.

As you can see above, we just fired a bunch of brad nails into pine wood.  Yes, we can get it so the PSI is being used faster than it can refill but we were going crazy.  We shot all those nails and it was still hovering around 90 psi from 135 psi.  You’re never going to be firing that fast so if you use this like you normally would use your finish or brad nailer, this will have no issues with keeping up with you.  So when it comes to power and performance, this compressor is great.

Value

You can pick this up at your local Home Depot or Home Depot online for $349.  At first, I understand if you think this is expensive, especially because it’s a bare tool.  Sure you can buy other compressors for around $130 to $250 but the Milwaukee gives you something that most other compressors can’t, the freedom.

Yes, you can get other compressors that are extremely quiet but with the Milwaukee compressor, you get the freedom to move around and still be able to use your Pneumatic nailer.  How nice is it to just place your compressor in the center of the room and start nailing up trim.  Then pick up and go into the next room.  No worry about dragging a power cord or trying to find power.

So for me, I think this offers a great value.

Rating Explained

  • Quality – The compressor received a 3.5 because while we love the quality, our unit has some paint chips on the frame, black marks on the plastic, and a crack where two pieces are snapped together.  The welds are tight and clean, the tank is sturdy and the frame offers plenty of protection.
  • Features – The ability to lose the power cord gives this unit high marks, the only deduction was because it would be nice if it was a hybrid for those who might want a power cord.  Yes, we understand the point of a cordless tool, but it’s nice to always have that option of being able to plug an extension cord into the compressor.
  • Performance – The tank fills quickly, the unit is quiet and we were able to jam non stop with both brad and finish nails.  Sure if we go all out we can get it where the tank can’t keep up but in the real world, you’re not going to be nailing this fast with finish carpentry.  So for performance, this hits high marks.
  • Design – The user panel is laid out nicely and you can see it while standing over it.  The power button is large and easy to turn on and off.  The different ways a user can set the unit up or carry it around is well thought out and nicely designed.  Again, Milwaukee hit the target with the design.
  • Value – I think the value is great and what this compressor offers, it’s worth the money.  However $350 is a lot for an investment and may stop the tradesman who is on the fence from buying it so we had to move the rating down a little.  Still overall, worth the money in my opinion.

Final Thought

I know some people might not see the point of having a cordless compressor with everything going the way of cordless nailers.  But this is why I love Milwaukee, they aren’t leaving anyone behind.  They know and understand there are certain tradesmen who still own and love their pneumatic nailers and they created a way to make their life a little easier.  Let’s face it, there are places a pneumatic nailer will shine over a cordless nailer, especially tight spots and for weight reasons.

The Milwaukee compressor is quiet and performs like a champ.  Anyone looking to keep their pneumatic nailers but wants the freedom of not worrying about power, the Milwaukee cordless compressor is the way to go.

How many times have you needed a compressor or inflator?  As a homeowner, I am sure a lot of times, even more often if you have kids.  For me, it’s one of my most used tools.  I am always using it for the kid’s bike tires, my automobile tires, basketballs, footballs, inflatable beds, inflatable rafts, and the list goes on.  Today we are going to cover a new brand but not a new tool, the Hart Digital Inflator.

If you are not familiar with Hart, learn more about Hart Power Tools.

Hart Digital Inflator – Information

  • Model – 577708188
  • Price – $54

Hart Digital Inflator – Features

Hart Digital Inflator

The inflator will pump a car tire from flat to full in about 4 minutes which isn’t bad. The unit has a range of 0-150 psi which means you can use this on a variety of applications. One cool feature is the auto shut off.  Just set the pressure you want, press start and it will shut off once it hits that desired pressure.

If you are filling pool toys, inflatable beds or other toys that have a larger size diameter filling holes, no worries as the inflator has a large tube for those type of applications.  The inflator can fill a twin air mattress in under 45 seconds.

The unit is powered by the Hart 20V battery.

The batteries can be charged using a slide on charger.

Hart Digital Inflator

Turning the unit on and off is straight forward.  Setting the desired pressure is also straight forward.  The unit has an easy to read screen with a blue back light.

All the accessories and hoses are stored on board so no worries about trying to find a place for them.

One cool feature is the light on the end of the handle.  This comes in handy if you are using it at night or in a darker area.

Hart Digital Inflator – Impressions

Hart Digital Inflator

The inflator reminds me a lot of the Ryobi inflators.  The inflator is very easy to use and set up.  Yes, it takes longer to fill up a car tire than a compressor but when compared to other inflators, it’s not any faster or slower.

The screen is easy to read and the braided hose is quality and won’t get damaged easily.

Hart Digital Inflator

As you would expect, it’s easy to attach the tire inflator.  Setting the desired pressure is easy.  The inflator is loud but just as loud as other inflators we have tested.  One downside to some might be real-time pressure.  Once you set the desired pressure and press start, the inflator will start filling.  As it fills, it just stays the same pressure as the original pressure when you pressed start.  If you stop the inflator before the automatic shutoff, it will show you the new pressure.

In regards to speed, it’s about what we have seen with other inflators.  It’s not as fast as a compressor but the set and forget features are nice.

I own a truck that sits up higher.  The cord doesn’t have any issues reaching even when the tire stem is at the top.

Hart Digital Inflator – Wrap Up

Overall this is a great inflator for the money.  If you want a handheld inflator that isn’t as much, check out the Hart Handheld Inflator which only costs $30.  In terms of this inflator, I think it’s a winner for $54.  Yes, it’s loud, but all inflators are loud.  Yes, I would like it to show how much air is being put in the tires as I am filling but those are the only two negatives I have with this tool.  Overall the price is great and it does what they advertise and for cheaper than other brands.  Considering you can jump into a wide variety of other Hart tools, it’s a no brainer.

Senco dates back to the 1930’s so when it comes to experience, you know they have it.  They have been working with fasteners and compressors for a long time.  Today we are taking a look at an older product they have the Senco PC1131.  This is one of the compressors that is a workhorse and performs.  So let’s jump into the Senco PC1131 Compressor Review.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review Overview

You may be asking why are we reviewing a tool that has been around for a while and why hasn’t it been updated?  Simple, why update a good thing that offers performance, tradesman love and it has a proven track record.  Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a long-winded review since you can find a bunch of reviews on this compressor.

However, we have received a ton of emails over the last year or so about this compressor so we figured it would be a great time to take a look at a solid, proven compressor.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review Features

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review

The PC1131 is a twin steel tank for durability. This unit generates 4.4 CFM which is a ton for this size system. The compressors do have a little weight coming in at 60 lbs.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review

The compressors feature a single outlet.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review

The gauges are easy to read and are protected by facing the inside of the compressor. The max psi is 125.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review

The motor is on the back of the unit which gives this more of a box design compared to a pancake design. The motor is a 2 HP motor with an oil-splash pump. The motor draws about 14 amps.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review

On top of the unit, there is a rubber handle which is located directly in the center of the compressor making the balance better when carrying it from point A to point B.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review Performance

Right now we have it on a job site and they are loving it.  For these guys, they want two things.  A tough compressor that will last and a compressor that will keep up with their needs.  Sometimes they are running two framers and other times they are doing trim work.  So for them, having a single compressor is priceless as they only have a certain amount of room in their truck and don’t want to carry unnecessary tools.

A couple of points that stuck out to them besides the above items is the fast fill time. They timed it a couple of times and it’s about 70 seconds with a 15 second recovery time.

One good point that was brought up was the gauges and air intake.  They do like the fact that it’s recessed which means it’s more protected than other compressors that have it protruding.

They had two cons to this unit.  First, was that there was no see-through glass window to check the oil.  Not a huge deal as they can check the stick, but they would like to be able to see the oil level.  The second item was the valves.  While they were easy to bleed, the thumb screw can be a pain if the last person really tightened it hard.  With a ball valve, it would be much easier to open and close.  Again, it wasn’t a huge deal on their end but something to note.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review Value

The compressor runs about $210 on Amazon.  How well it’s built and the power behind this unit, it seems like a fair price. Of course, we have seen compressors for much cheaper and some for much more.  So looking into the range of other compressors in the same class, it’s a deal.

Senco PC1131 Compressor Review Final Thoughts

Before I close this out, you will see some people complain about the compressor. Mostly that it will have a hard time starting in the cold.  This isn’t unusual for oil compressors.  It’s the same when you have fuel for nailers and lithium batteries.  So I am not holding this one on Senco as it’s just the way these compressors work.

So in the end, I think this is a beast.  Now, this isn’t for everyone.  If you are looking for a little finish nailer or something lightweight, this is not your compressor.  If you want something that is strong and will take job site abuse, this is it.  If you want power and airflow to run some framers and need a small size, this is your compressor.

In fact, there are lots of professional tradesmen who use these tools. Second, you get a quality tool for much less than other tools on the market. Third, the Ryobi line is huge. So you can own one battery platform and buy all most any tool and it works on this line. Well, I could sit here and name another ten reasons why Ryobi dominates but let’s get into the Ryobi cordless compressor review and see what we like and don’t like about this tool.

Ryobi Cordless Compressor Review Overview

Compressors are great, well in regards to getting the job done. Two things that always bother me with a compressor is the power cord and the noise. Sure you have the air hose, but not much you can do with that.

I have been working on my house and I have gone all most completely cordless. I am tired of tripping over extension cords, trying to find an open outlet and ruining power cords. It’s just a pain dealing with cords.

If only someone made a cordless compressor. Well, we are in luck. Ryobi has one and all I can say, it was awesome using my Porter Cable pin nailer to build my shelves, mantle and TV stand and not have to deal with a power cord. I only have two outlets in the house that work so it would have been very hard and frustrating to deal with a power cord while still trying to cut the wood and perform other tasks.

The Ryobi compressor (Model P739) is a 1-gallon compressor delivers up to 120 psi, all without a power cord.

The compressor is powered by a Ryobi 18V Battery. This battery is part of the One+ which means it works with any Ryobi power tool.

The tank is made of steel, so while it does increase the weight (14 lbs), it also increases the durability.

Ryobi Cordless Compressor Review

The gauge placement is typical of compressors where you have the tank psi on the left and the outlet pressure on the right. Stuck in the middle is the lockable pressure adjustment.

Ryobi Cordless Compressor Review

Both gauges are very easy to read and are numbered every 30 psi.

The unit features a metal bar on both sides that allows the user to wrap an air hose and allows for easier storage and transporting when using as a finish nailer or filling up tires or kids toys.

Each leg is supported by a rubber foot to protect the surface and allow the unit not to walk when filling.

Ryobi Cordless Compressor Review

There is a single universal push-to-connect quick coupler which makes it easy for one-handed operation.

Ryobi Cordless Compressor Review

As with all other compressors, this has a safety valve in case the motor doesn’t shut down and needs to release pressure.

Located by the battery, there is a toggle switch to turn the unit on or off.

On the bottom of the unit, there is a drain valve to let air or water out after use.

The handle has a rubber grip making it more comfortable to carry around.

Ryobi Cordless Compressor Review Performance

So here is the deal. There is a lot to love about this and some things I would like to to see changed. So let’s start with the pros of this compressor.

First I love how fast it fills the task. While it’s not a huge tank, I am not waiting longer than a minute to fill the tank.

Second, I love how the needle is steady. You won’t see the needle bouncing around which is always nice when you’re trying to read the pressure.

Third, I like how easy it is to change the pressure. Sure all compressors are easy to adjust the pressure, but since this system locks the pressure in, all you have to do is pull out the dial, change the pressure and push it back in to lock it back in place.

Fourth, I like how the unit doesn’t move or bounce around when it’s filling. The rubber feet help keep the unit in place and not move around, plus it protects the work surface it;’s sitting on.

Fifth, I love the weight. The unit isn’t heavy or bulky when trying to carry it around.

For the last item, I love the runtime. Now this will vary, but I feel like I was able to get a ton of work out of it before I had to change the battery.

While there is a lot to love about this unit, there is one thing I would like to see changed and that would be the gauge placement. You have to more or less be at eye level to read the gauges. Now maybe this is designed to be on a workbench and then this isn’t an issue.  For me, I had it on the floor and the gauges weren’t tilted where I could look down on them and get an accurate reading. Not a huge deal in the end, but something to be noted.

OK, so the noise level which is a huge issue. You know most compressors are extremely noisy especially when used inside. While this compressor does is on the loud side, it’s not annoying or painful to the ears. Most of the time you have a motor and you can hear the rod or something knocking making it very loud. This doesn’t have that annoying metal on metal banging. So while it’s loud, it’s not something that really stands out.

Ryobi Cordless Compressor Review Value

As with the other Ryobi tools, I think this compressor is priced extremely fair. The unit sells for about $100 at The Home Depot. Sure your not going to be running a framing nailer off this, but for the homeowner who is doing DIY projects, this is perfect. Even for the professional who has to do some punch list items like fixing trim or casing, this is a huge plus to carry around a lightweight unit, get in and get out.

Ryobi Cordless Compressor Review Final Thoughts

Bottom line, how can you go wrong with this compressor? The compressor has a good build quality, offers great runtime and does the job. Considering you can invest in a line that offers one of the largest lines of cordless products, it’s hard not to get into this compressor for your small projects.

Searching for an entry-level compressor and air tool set can be somewhat intimidating. How much do you spend? Do you really need both a brad nailer and a finish nailer? Thankfully Porter Cable has made it simple with their 3 Tool Combo Kit. While Porter Cable is known today as a budget-friendly brand, they still deliver quality and performance in an easy to use package that will have you wishing you would have purchased it sooner. Plus, you honestly can’t be in a bad mood when using air tools.  Let’s take a look at the Porter Cable Compressor Combo Kit Review.

Porter Cable Compressor Combo Kit Overview

The Porter Cable 3 Tool Combo set includes a 6-gallon compressor as well as 3 tools: a finish nailer, a brad nailer and a crown stapler. The set also includes a 25-foot hose and two quick connect couplers which makes setting up a breeze. All of the tools are sold individually or in various other combinations. I have had this set for some time, however it is still available at Amazon or Home Depot.

Porter Cable Compressor Combo Kit Features

The 6-gallon compressor model number C2002 runs on 10 Amps/ 120 Volts and has a Max PSI of 150. Weighing in at 30 pounds the unit was designed to be portable while still packing significant power. While the compressor is loud initially, it’s honestly quieter than most compressors I’ve heard. One of the features that stick out the most is the speed in which it fills. In just under two and a half minutes the compressor is ready to go.

The gauges are easy to read and the knobs are easy to set, making set up a breeze.

There are two outlets allowing the use of two air tools simultaneously.

The release valve is opened with a twist and is on the bottom rear of the compressor, and the quick drain plug is just under the adjustment knob on the front of the motor.

A common feature of the tools is the oil-free pump which enhances the life of the tool and eliminates the maintenance needed in earlier air tool models. Featuring an aluminum body with plastic accents all three tools feel sturdy and solid while keeping it lightweight allowing for long-term use without discomfort. The smooth rubberized grip also allows for a secure hold while working.

The finish nailer model number FN250SB uses 16-gauge nails from 1 inch to 2.5 inches long.

The brad nailer model number BN200SB uses 18-gauge nails from 5/8 inches to 2 inches long.

The nailers’ rubberized tips work to prevent damage to workpieces.

Both have a sequential style trigger requiring pressure on the trigger as well as the tip in order to fire.

The nailers’ have an easy to use nail housing mechanism, allowing for flat loading and the latch mechanism assures the user the nail gun is loaded correctly. Both nailers’ feature a 100-nail capacity.

The air exhaust at the back of both guns also allows for air flow to be adjusted which comes in handy in dusty environments.

The nailers’ feature a tool-free jam release mechanism within the guns that corrects the tedious challenge of removing jammed nails. This feature works well overall, however, periodically the release is controlled by springs that on the finish nailer have occasionally jammed themselves. It is an easy fix though, and with a smidge of grease the problem is resolved.

The crown stapler model number TSO56 uses heavy duty 3/8-inch staples from ¼ inch to 9/16 inches and features a dual trigger design. It actually can shoot 18-gauge brad nails as well, but I’ve never used this feature. Like the nailers’, it also requires no maintenance based on its oil-free design.

The bottom load design was easy to get the hang of, a simple push and a slight downward motion on the rubberized entry point allows the loading mechanism to slide out.

Porter Cable Compressor Combo Kit Performance

My personal favorite feature is the tool-free depth of drive adjustment knobs allowing for a customized depth ensuring there are ideal results.  The knobs are simple, on the brad nailer the knob is on top, and on the finish nailer it is on the right side. A quick turn either direction adjusts the nail penetration up or down.  I often increase the depth of drive for furniture when I intend to fill it, but when aiming for flush set nails, these tools do not disappoint.

This set from Porter Cable performs consistently and its versatility is endless. Not only do they excel at their intended uses but there have been countless times I’ve reached for them when I didn’t expect to. From furniture building to home improvement projects this set has significantly improved overall efficiency of otherwise tedious tasks. While they aren’t meant for installing siding or heavy framing, don’t let that discourage you as they seem to be in constant use in my workshop.

Porter Cable Compressor Combo Kit Value

The value of the set is where it shines as often times the initial investment seems to push people away from air tools. Porter Cable has solved this concern by bundling this set together at a price point that gives virtually everyone access to the benefit of time savings while yielding exceptional results. If you were to purchase these tools separately you would be paying somewhere between $50 and $119 a piece. Each tool on its own is well worth their price tags but combined as a set for just shy of two hundred dollars makes it a sure bet.

Porter Cable Compressor Combo Kit Final Thought

The Porter Cable company has been around for over a hundred years and certainly has their place in today’s tool market. While you can find tools with more features and power, their tools have earned their spot as a leader with homeowners and budget-conscious professionals alike. Outside of your basic drill and circular saw, this would be one of the top purchases I would recommend to new homeowners or those looking to explore the versatility of air tools without breaking the bank.

Battery technology has come a long way over the years.  What we once thought was impossible is now possible with Lithium-Ion batteries.  Power tool manufacturers are designing and producing stronger, faster and more efficient cordless tools.  We no longer need to be tied to an outlet.  One of these power tools that has been cutting the cord is compressors.  We are now starting to see cordless compressors.  We first saw it with the Ridgid cordless compressor and now we see it with the DEWALT compressor.  So sit back and check out our DEWALT Flexvolt Compressor Review.

DEWALT Flexvolt Compressor Review Overview

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

DEWALT invested heavy into their Flexvolt line of tools which is a 60V battery but will also power their 20V tools.  So those high demand tools, the Flexvolt steps up and runs 60V to give you the power you need.

The advantage of this is you can now run a compressor for extended periods of time.  Having a cordless compressor is awesome.  It means you are not tied to any outlet.  You might be asking yourself why do I really need a cordless compressor when I can get a cordless nailer?

For some people, they still don’t like the way cordless nailers perform.  They still want the power and consistency of a pneumatic nailer.  However, there are still plenty of people out there who haven’t invested into a cordless nailer and still use their pneumatic nailer.  Another reason you might want a cordless compressor is you can carry the tank around and fill up your tires.  Without getting into too much depth, I think you understand the need for a cordless compressor.

DEWALT Flexvolt Compressor Review Features

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

DEWALT built the Flexvolt brushless compressor around a 2.5-gallon steel tank.  You should get about 1,200 nails per charge but again that depends on the size of the nails and the wood you are firing into.  The unit uses an oil-free pump for a no-maintenance solution.  The unit weighs in at about 21 lbs.

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

The front of the compressor has a very nice layout and is easy to read and operate.

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

The pressure gauge is easy to read and the needle doesn’t jump around when the compressor is running.  The max PSI is 135.  The unit puts out 1.2 SCFM @ 90.

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

On the right side, you can regulate the pressure.  While most compressors use a needle and turn valve to adjust the pressure, Dewalt uses a knob.  Just turn the knob to the desired position and you are all set.

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

The safety release valve is located on the left side of the compressor.

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

The unit has one coupler which is located on the right side of the compressor.

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

There is a sealed on/off switch located towards the top of the compressor.

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

DEWALT uses a ball drain valve to drain the tank when not in use.  This is located on the bottom side of the tank.

Dewalt Flexvolt Compressor Review

On the bottom of the compressor, there are four rubber feet.  Not only do the rubber feet protect the surface, but they also keep it in place when the tank is filling and you don’t have to worry about the compressor moving around.

DEWALT Flexvolt Compressor Review Performance

The size of the unit makes it easy to carry around.  Plus with it only weighing 21 lbs, it’s another reason to love this compressor.

To fill the compressor it takes a little over 2 minutes to get the tank pressure up to 135 psi.

DEWALT indicated the noise level is 79 dB which isn’t bad for a compressor.  For me, it’s a little loud but maybe that’s because I am used to a Rolair compressor and those are extremely quiet.  However, they are not cordless.

I love the regulator knob.  I am so used to having to turn a valve and waiting to see what the needle stops at.  With the DEWALT, just turn it and forget it.  Pretty cool.

DEWALT Flexvolt Compressor Review Value

For about $300 at The Home Depot, you get this compressor, a Flexvolt battery, and charger.  This really isn’t a bad deal.  I think anyone looking for a cordless solution that offers plenty of power and run time would agree that this is a great price point.

DEWALT Flexvolt Compressor Review Final Thoughts

I don’t get to use much of the Flexvolt but the items I have used, I have been impressed with.  I love how DEWALT is really trying to make a cordless jobsite.  The Flexvolt miter saw and table saw have been huge winners and the Flexvolt compressor is just another addition to this lineup.

Ridgid is one of those manufacturers who make great tools but you don’t hear a lot about them.  As I always say they are a sleeping giant.  While they release a lot of new tools., each year they always have a couple new tools that break the mold.  Take this compressor for example.  You may remember we reviewed this Ridgid Compressor a while back but we have received so many questions on it, we figure we would go more in depth on it.  So sit back and check out our Ridgid Cordless Compressor review.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review Overview

While cordless tools have come a long way over the years we still have tools where we rely on air.  The pneumatic tools still require us to carry a compressor around to complete tasks, even small tasks.  What if there was a way to complete these small tasks using a 18V battery powered compressor?

Well, you are in luck.  Ridgid has a 18V battery powered compressor on the market that will do this.  The tank is small, lightweight, powerful and has decent run time.

So you no longer have to carry a huge compressor into a clients house, walk up the stairs, find power just to put on a couple pieces of trim.  You can now make your life so much easier.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review Features

The Ridgid compressor features a 1-gallon steel tank.  While steel tanks are heavier than aluminum, steel tanks also hold up better over the long haul.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review

As we noted in the headline of this article, this compressor is powered by Ridgid’s 18V battery.  While you can’t plug the unit into an outlet, you can run this off either 1 or 2 batteries.  While we didn’t test the run time, according to Ridgid you can drive up to 1,200 nails per charge.  Not sure what size nails or into what material these figures are derived from.

We didn’t test the run time because we really feel like this is perfect for the punch list items and smaller jobs.  If you use the compressor for one of those two items, run time should never be a factor.

There is a single carrying handle located on top of the unit.  The handle has a nice rubber grip so it doesn’t slip around when trying to carry it on a job site.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review

On the bottom of the unit, there are rubber pads on the front and back of the unit.  These pads perform two functions.  First, it stops the compressor from walking when the unit kicks on.  The second function is to protect the floor.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review

To turn the compressor on or off, there is a red toggle switch located on the top of the unit.

On the front of the unit, there are two very easy to read gauges.  One is for the tank pressure (125 max psi) and the other is your outlet pressure.  Even when the unit is on, the gauges are easy to read as the needle doesn’t bounce around.  In the middle, you can see Ridgid added a locking regulator knob.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review

The unit features one quick outlet which is located just below the gauges.  To the left of the outlet is a pressure relief valve.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review

When you are done with the compressor, there is a turn drain valve located on the bottom of the tank.  This is easy to access and allows for quick drainage.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review

When it’s time to clean up, you can even use the provided hose wrap to keep your hose organized and always within reach.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review Performance

I am not going to get into the run time or how often the compressor kicks on because there are too many variables to truly measure those items.

Instead, we looked at the use of this compressor.  This compressor is for quick punch list items or smaller jobs.  If you have to install chair railing or some baseboard, this nailer is a perfect solution.  You are using a finish nailer that doesn’t require a ton of air.

Overall the compressor is great and performed just as you would expect.  The sound isn’t crazy loud or crazy quiet.  While we didn’t have a job at the time to test this on, we ran a bunch of nails through some baseboard into a 2×4 just to get a good feel.  Time and time again we were able to drop a ton of nails before the compressor kicked on.  Each time the nails set perfect.

The nailer is light and compact enough that this is a perfect solution for those quick jobs.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Review Value

While the unit is rock solid, it is on the pricey side.  You can expect to pay about $180 at The Home Depot for the cordless compressor and that is the bare tool.  If you want to buy two batteries and a charger you will spend about $360.  But with that said, it’s for a specific consumer.

This is not meant to replace your bigger compressor.  This is designed for the contractor who wants to get in and out of a job.  Someone who has a quick punch list to complete. Someone who doesn’t want to drag around a heavy compressor and try to find power.

So if you look at it as only a $180 compressor, yes, it’s on the expensive side of the price spectrum.  However, if you look at the convenience it will add to your job, it’s not a bad price.  You can get in and out and not worry about a heavy compressor or finding power. So for the convenience factors, it’s a pretty good buy.

Ridgid Cordless Compressor Final Thoughts

Overall this is a great unit to own.  If you are looking for something you can use for those quick punch list jobs where you don’t want to bring in a heavy compressor and find power, this is a great solution.  The unit has plenty of power and great run time.

Ridgid is at it again with a brand new air compressor, the OF45200SS.  If you look at what Ridgid is touting with the air compressor, you might not believe it.  I was also reading some of the online reviews and people did think some of these claims were off, so when we talk about this compressor I will go over those claims and information.

First, let me tell you about this compressor.  The compressor is a 200 psi 4.5 gallon compressor.  200 psi is a lot for the size of this unit.  Also with 200 psi, you can do a lot of work without the compressor cycling on and off.  The unit puts out 5.1 SCFM at 90 psi, which is great.  When Ridgid designed this unit, they stuck not one, but two universal push to connect quick couplers on the front of the unit.  These offer a single handed operation to plug in, which is a great feature.  The unit has two tanks, but they are connected together.  Since there are two tanks, there are also two drain valves.  These valves are 1/4 in turn valves for easy operation.  There is also a locking mechanism for the pressure regulator.  All in all, a very impressive compressor.

Ridgid OF45200SS

Now I was reading other reviews and people complained about two things, well some people.  First Ridgid states this is a quiet compressor coming in at 77 dB.  The second thing is the unit is more compact and lighter.  So since people were complaining I would like to cover these two topics.  First is the noise.  Let’s face it, it’s a compressor, it’s going have some noise.  Is it the quietest compressor I have ever heard, no.  The noise is weird on this unit.  I can’t say it extremely quiet, but it’s also not loud.  I know that doesn’t make sense, but let me explain.  Normally with compressors, you hear a loud piston action or a metal on metal action that is loud.  While this one has noise to it, you don’t hear that loud banging.  It’s more of just a normal motor noise.  So while you can’t use this in a library, it’s much quieter compared to other compressors of this caliber.

Second is weight.  Ridgid states it’s lightweight.  OK, the unit is 61 lbs, so unless you are Hercules, this is still heavy.  What you have to understand that the unit is lightweight compared to other compressors of this caliber.  So you have to understand this in context.

So if you get this unit and expect it to be super quiet and super lightweight, you will be disappointed.  If you buy this compressor and understand what type of compressor you are getting and then you look at the weight and noise level, you are going to be extremely happy and pleased with your purchase.  I think Ridgid did an awesome job at making such a powerful compressor in such as compact design.

Now I know this isn’t for everyone, but there are a ton of people who I think will welcome this nailer.  For the professionals, it’s great for a trim guy.  You don’t have to worry about an extra power cord.  Plus with pneumatic nailers, they tend to be smaller than battery powered nailers so you will still be able to get into tight spots.  There are a ton more uses in the professional environment, but I am already sure you know who else can use this nailer.

For me, this is awesome for the hobby guy or the dad who has kids.  I am at the point in my life where I am basically always carrying around a compressor.  I am either filling up my tires out in the front of the house or filling up my kid’s tires or their toys.  I never knew so many things took air until I had kids.

Ridgid designed this with a brushless motor which means it more efficient and should last longer.  Speaking of efficient, according to Ridgid this can drive up to 1,200 nail per.  Not too bad.  On the bottom of the tank, there is a 1/4 turn ball valve to drain the tank when not in use.  On top of the unit, the numbers are easy to read and I personally like the fact it has a locking regulator knob so you won’t get air spikes.

The tank is a 1 gallon.  Now we didn’t time how long it took to fill, but it really didn’t seem too bad to get the tank up to 120psi.  I would have to say it was less than a minute.

Looking around at today’s market, you start to wonder who doesn’t make a compressor?  Where ever you look, some manufacturer has a portable compressor ready for someone to buy it up.  Over the years we have seen a ton of different compressors.  For the professional, we love Rolair compressors.  They are tough, quiet and produce a heck of a lot of power for their size.  Since these are made for the professional, they are built to last the abuse of a job site, something a homeowner will never put a compressor through.  So if you are a homeowner, why pay the premium when you will never put a compressor through that type of abuse?  However, just because you will not be beating on your compressor, you still want all the nice options such as power and a quiet operation.  With that said, let me introduce you to the Kobalt Twin Stack.  If you are looking for a compressor that has serious power and is very quiet to operate, well read on and check out our Kobalt compressor review.

If you are not familiar with Kobalt products, this is a house brand for Lowes.  Kobalt designs and produces a ton of different tools for the homeowner such as cordless tools, hand tools, OPE and more.  So when you think of Kobalt, understand this is a large producer of tools and they have the experience of making quality tools that won’t break the bank.

Kobalt Compressor Review – Top Panel

Kobalt Compressor Top Panel

Starting at the top of the unit, you will see a big red button, almost like Rudolph’s nose.  This button serves as the ON/OFF switch.  Right below the power button, you can see two very easy to read gauges.  The numbers are nice and big, so even people with bad eyesight like mine won’t have any issues seeing either the tank pressure or tool pressure. In between the gauges lays the tool pressure regulator.  Not only is the knob large, but when you increase or decrease the pressure, there is enough resistance on the knob to make it feel like it’s a quality knob.  I can’t say I am a huge fan of the knobs that are extremely easy to turn.  When there is a little resistance, it just feels like a quality product.  One feature I am glad Kobalt didn’t overlook is the single-handed quick connect coupler.  All a user needs to do, is push the air hose on and it will lock into place.  No more having to push down on a ring, insert the hose and lock the hose into place.  Now it can be done easily and quickly.

Kobalt Compressor Review – Portability

Kobalt Compressor Review Kobalt Compressor Review

Kobalt Compressor ReviewAs a homeowner, you might leave this sitting in your garage or maybe you want to take it to the street and fill up your tires.  Maybe you want to use this with a framing gun or finish nailer.  Whatever way you use this compressor, Kobalt has you covered.  This compressor is definitely designed for portability.  First, Kobalt designed this with no-flat tires.  The tires are a hard plastic, but they are not some cheap plastic tires.  I have seen some tires where they are hollow inside and will wear down quickly after using.  With these tires, they seem to be a solid, sturdy plastic, which means they should last you a lifetime.  Next for portability, is the design of the handle. Again, this isn’t some cheap plastic handle.  The handle is a solid metal handle, with a nice top grip when moving it from location to location.  Here is another great feature to this compressor.  The handle is also retractable when not in use.  Each side of the handle has a lever, again a nice metal lever, not cheap plastic.  Open each lever and the top handle will slide into the bottom part of the slides.  For me, this is a very cool feature.

Kobalt Compress Review – Twin Tank

Kobalt Compressor Review
4.3 Gallon Twin Tank

Kobalt designed this compressor with a twin tank.  Personally, I love twin tank designs because they take up much less space since they are on top of each other.  The tank can hold 4.3 gallons of air, which is a fair amount for such a small footprint.

Kobalt Compressor Review – Quiet Motor

Kobalt Compressor Review

So far this compressor has hit a home run on all aspects, but what about performance and operation?  First, let’s discuss the operation.  According to Kobalt, this compressor is 80% quieter than traditional compressors of the same size.  I am not sure how they do this, but I can tell you first hand this is one of the quietest compressors we have tested.  Now I am not saying you can’t hear it, but let’s put it this way.  You can be sitting right next to this compressor, while it’s on and have a conversation with someone else and not even have to raise your voice.  Yes, it’s that quiet.  You have to love it, no more loud noisy compressors echoing throughout your garage.  When my kids were young, they would always get freaked out when the compressor would kick on.  If I had this compressor, I am sure they wouldn’t have even noticed.  In terms of noise, Kobalt hit a home run.

The motor is powered by 120-volt 1-horsepower induction motor which features two pumps.  The unit will pull 7.5 amps.  As a note, this is an oil-free pump, so no longer do you have to worry about running a compressor with low oil and burning out the motor.  The max PSI is 125 which means you can use this with a framing nailer, finish nailer or brad nailer.  I think the sweet spot is a finish or brad nailer.  The SCFM is 3.3 at 40psi.

Bottom Line

This is a great compressor for the money.  The unit is extremely quiet, almost to the point where you have to double check that it’s even on.  Both pressure dials are extremely easy to see and read.  I love the fact you don’t have to bend over to see either pressure.  Considering the unit is portable is a huge plus.  The unit rolls easily and the fold down handle makes it a perfect compressor to own for the homeowner.  I love how Kobalt didn’t cut any corners with this compressor.  The Kobalt compressor seems like a quality compressor that will last for years.  With a 1 year warranty, this is hard to go wrong with buying one of these.  I think Kobalt did an awesome job with the design and implementation of this compressor.

The green machine, the Ryobi Inflator.  Just another tool in their 50+ 18V tool platform.  Well I really shouldn’t say “Just another Tool” because it’s not just another tool.  Ryobi has a ton of tools in their 18V line up and Ryobi doesn’t just put out tools to put them out.  Their 18V line is awesome for the homeowner and smaller contractors.  Ryobi tools are designed for the homeowner and that is their niche market.  The one thing I can say about Ryobi is that no other brand compares to them in the homeowner market.  Ryobi has it’s place and owns this market.  You get a heck of a tool for a great price.  In fact, look around and you will even see some contractors using their tools.  To me, that says a lot.  A company who designs tools for a homeowner, but even contractors are getting them.  So with that said, I don’t think this tool will be owned by many contractors unless that need a quick fix for their wheel barrow tires or if they like to play volleyball on their breaks.  Today we are talking about the Ryobi Inflator model P737.

Ryobi InflatorThis is one of my most used tools in my house.  I have an 8 year old and 6 year old who are constantly playing sports and riding bikes.  I feel that every day they are asking me to put air in their tires and sports balls.  I have been using the Ryobi P731 and love it.  It has saved me so many times from going to the hospital since I didn’t have to blow up rafts manually.  When I saw Ryobi has the handheld inflator out, I had to get this and try it out.

The Ryobi Inflator comes as a bare tool and retails for about $25 at The Home Depot.  For me, that’s a steal.  Now there isn’t much to this tool as it pumps air and you can hold it in your hand.  One thing that surprised me was how long the hose was.  The air hose is 20″ long.  I am not sure why I was expecting something shorter.  When not in use, you can attach the hose to the top of the unit for storage.  On the base of the tool, you can store your needle accessories.

On the back of the tool, there is a very easy to read pressure gauge.  When I first saw the gauge, my natural reaction was to try and turn it.  Not sure why, but it looks like it’s a dial for PSI setting.  Well it doesn’t work that way.  This is an inflator that you attach and have to watch the PSI and take your finger off the trigger when you have enough air.  The Ryobi Inflator is designed to work from 0-150 psi, so you do have a wide range of items this can be used for.

Again, there really isn’t much to this inflator.  Just attach it to your tire or insert the needle into the ball, pull the trigger and watch your psi.  So with that said, it does as advertised.  Anyone who has kids and you’re spending your days pumping up balls, rafts or tires, this is a must have.  With all the other tools available in their line, I am sure you will expand into other tools.  With a 3 year warranty, it’s hard to go wrong.

I have two kids that love sports.  I feel like every day I am either blowing up their basketball, soccer ball, bike tires or something.  So when Kobalt reached out to us to try their new Kobalt Inflator, I was quick to say yes.  Anything that can make my life easier, I am on board.  Besides, this inflator looked pretty cool.

When I first received the inflator, I have to admit I was a little disappointed.  Kobalt has an awesome 24V battery platform on the market, why didn’t they incorporate that battery platform into this tool, making it more portable. I think this unit in a Kobalt 24V battery platform would be awesome and make this so practical.  Now I am not saying it’s not practical because this does a heck of a job.

Kobalt InflatorThe Kobalt inflator is a dual power inflator which means you can use it off a 12V power source or a 120V, making it great for a car or RV.  Without being stuck to batteries, you never have to worry about a dead battery if you need to inflate a tire.  I know, how often do you need to inflate a tire?  Think about it this way.  You get a flat and are stuck on the side of the road.  You put the spare tire on, only to realize the spare is low on air because who checks their spare tire for air?  With the inflator, you can now get from point A to point B.  So I am really looking at this for an emergency use in this scenario.  Plus, when you go camping in your RV, you always bring toys with you.  Now you have a way to put air in the toys.

Not only did they start off with a cool looking inflator, but they built storage into it.  On the top of the unit, you can open up a door and find different accessories like 2 sports needles and a raft nozzle.  On the right side of the unit, hidden behind a door is a 26″ rubber air hose with a clamp-on valve.  Moving to the left side you can find a 16′ 12 Volt power cord for your cigarette lighter.  Do they even call it a cigarette outlet anymore?  On the back of the unit you can find more surprises, such as a cord storage wrap.  You will also notice 4 LED lights and an on/off button for the lights.

Kobalt did an awesome job with the interface and use of the inflator.  First, it has a nice, easy to read digital display. The display has a nice back lit contrast that will automatically shut off.  Another cool feature to the Kobalt inflator is the unit has a built-in pressure gauge so you know how much pressure is in your tires before you fill.  Then you can easily set the desired pressure and let it run.  I have to say, this is a very nice layout and I like this design.

Specification

  • Maximum Pressure PSI 120
  • Weight (lbs.) 6.38
  • Inflation Tools Yes
  • Pressure Gauge Yes
  • Warranty 1-year limited

Kobalt did a good job with this inflator.  While I wish the power cord was longer and I really wish it was part of the 24V line, I love it for what it is, a Kobalt inflator.  The unit is easy to use and everything has a storage place.  The front display has a nice angle to it, so it’s easy to see even when standing above it.

Believe it or not, we are actually taking a look at a Hiachi product.  Over the years we haven’t done a ton of Hitachi, but the tools we have reviewed, like the miter saw, have all been great tools.  Time and time again, we hear about their nailers and how great they are, but we have never tried them, well until today.  Today we are going to take a look at the Hitachi KNT50AB.  The Hitachi KNT50AB is a finish combo kit.  In this kit you get a 6 gallon compressor and an 18 gauge brad nailer, plus an air hose.

Hitachi  EC710S 6-Gallon Oil-Free Pancake Compressor

Hitachi KNT50ABThe first item in the Hitachi KNT50AB is a 6 gallon pancake compressor and I have some bad news, good new.  The bad news is if you want just this compressor, you are out of luck.  This compressor is only sold in the Hitachi KNT50AB.  The good news is that the whole kit is only $200.  It’s a great deal for a 6 gallon compressor, air hose and 18 gauge brad nailer, that is from a company who makes quality tools.

The compressor is a pancake style that is oil-less, which means it tends to run a little louder.  Not saying it’s very loud because when we first started it up, I was expecting it to be much louder.  The decibels is 73 dBA, so in the middle of the road.  In regards to weight, again it’s not too bad.  The tank is steel so while you will get the toughness, you will also get a heavier weight than aluminum.  The compressor weights 36 lbs., but it’s not bad moving it around with the top handle design.

As you can see in the pictures, this has two couplings, which means you can run two nailers without having any issues.  Just make sure you check your CFM of the nailers to make sure you can run both nailers.

While I love the rubber feet and the ball value for draining the tank, I would have liked to see both pressure gauges place on the top of the unit.  The regulated pressure gauge is on top, which is easy to use, but the tank pressure gauge is on the front, meaning you have to bend over to see the pressure.  I know, it sounds petty and I sound lazy, but hey, it is what it is.  Not that it’s a huge deal to see the tank pressure.

Specification

  • Tank Type – Pancake
  • Tank Capacity – 6-Gallon
  • Pump Type – Oil-Free
  • Horsepower – 1 Hp
  • Max Pressure – 150 PSI
  • CFM @ 40 PSI 3.7
  • CFM @ 90 PSI 2.8

  • Height – 18.5″
  • Weight – 36.5 lbs

  • 1-Year Warranty

Hitachi  NT50AE2 2″ 18-Gauge Brad Nailer

Hitachi KNT50ABThe next item in the Hitachi KNT50AB is an 18 gauge brad nailer.  Again this is my first Hitachi nailer I have used.  I have to say while it’s not much to loook at, it does a heck of a job.  The aluminium body and slim design not only makes it lightweight, but you can really get into tighter spots.  While we didn’t experience any jams, they seem easy to clean with the tool free jam clearing capability.

Selecting and setting the height and firing mode (Bump or Contact) is located below the trigger and are both tool free.  While it doesn’t offer a lock out feature for dry fires, it does have a window indicator for those who pay attention to nail capacity.  It is easy to fire through the 100 nail capacity rather quickly because this nailer just runs so smooth.   There is even a storage place on the nailer to store another no mar nose piece, which an extra one is supplied.

Specifications

  • Nail Range – 5/8″ – 2″
  • Nail Gauge – 18
  • Nail Capacity – 100 Nails
  • Magazine Type – Side Loading
  • Operating Pressure – 70-120 PSI

  • Jam Clear – Tool-less

  • Magazine Type – Composite
  • Firing mode – Selective Actuation

Hitachi Air Hose

While the Hitachi KNT50AB kit is great, it was nice to see Hitachi include a nice air hose.  Now they could have decided to cheapen the unit by adding one of those cheap air hoses that cracks and you can’t ever coil up.  However they added a very nice flexible 25′ hose.  Plus it’s green, so it’s easy to see and that way you shouldn’t step on it.  The hose has industrial fittings and is spiral reinforced for durability.  This hose will stay flexible even in cold weather conditions.

Hitachi KNT50AB Hitachi KNT50AB Hitachi KNT50AB

Hitachi KNT50AB Final Thoughts

Bottom line you get one heck of a compressor, air hose and brad nailer for about $200 on Amazon.  The Hiachi KNT50AB kit has over 400 feedback with a 4.5 average star rating, so that says a lot about the kit.  The compressor is easy to carry around from place to place and the noise level isn’t to bad.   Overall it does a great job keeping up with the brad nailer and you shouldn’t have any issues.  I would have loved to see a nylon bag come with the kit as a place to store your nailer, hose and extra nails, but in the end, it’s not a deal breaker.  I have to say that my first experience with a Hitachi compressor and nailer was extremely positive.  Both tools seem like they are high quality and they are easy to use.  Someone looking for a high quality kit and doesn’t want to break the bank, will find a great buy in the Hitachi KNT50AB
