The oscillating tool is probably one of the most underrated tools on the market.  When I was remodeling my house, while it wasn’t my most used tool, it was a tool that when needed, saved me time and aggravation.  However, one thing that did aggravate me was how many blades I would rip through on a project.  There is a tool out there called the Sharp Pog that claims to help give life to old oscillating blades and saves you money and time.  So considering how many blades I went through, I knew this was something I wanted to try for myself.

Oscillating Tool

The oscillating tool was developed by a company called Fein in 1967.  The tool was designed to remove plaster casts without cutting the patient.  The main idea behind the tool is that the blade oscillates back and forth instead of a blade that rotates, therefore safer for the patient.

If you’re wondering what the difference is between an oscillating tool and a multitool, you are not alone.  The bottom line, there isn’t a difference.  Multitool came into play because this tool can perform a variety of different tasks, hence multitool.

Don’t quote me on this but I would guess that when the tool first came out, it was called the oscillating tool.  Then when the marketing department picked it up as a project to sell to the consumer, they probably labeled it the multitool to help show the variety of tasks this can do.

Fein’s patent expired in 2008 so this expensive tool now became cheaper as companies like Bosch, Milwaukee, and more designed their own versions in both corded and cordless.   However, in today’s world, we see a lot more cordless versions, not that battery technology has evolved and allowed these tools to increase their run times.

Oscillating Tool Blades

While there are a lot of different manufacturers in the marketplace, an oscillating tool is only as good as its blade.  Even the best multitool will not be able to perform its task if the blade is dull.  Also not only will a dull blade not be able to perform the task but a dull blade will put more stress on your multitool and can cause it to die or wear out prematurely.

If you are not familiar with oscillating blades, you can pay anywhere from $.50 per blade all the way up to $7 per blade.

The problem with oscillating tool blades is twofold.  First, they tend to wear out quickly, especially if you are doing a demanding job.  Not only can they wear out from use, but if you are removing wood or other materials and you hit a nail, say good by to the teeth on the blade.

The second problem is the cost.  Oscillating blades are not cheap.  Yes, they do sell cheap oscillating blades on Amazon but what good is that when they wear out quickly?  In the end, you can be spending the same amount of money because you go through them quickly.

Here is a story that is all too often told.  Someone gets a new oscillating blade, they start their work, and wham, they hit a nail.  Say good buy to five bucks quickly.  That is frustrating, you might as well just open your window and throw out your money.  Speaking of that, if you are going to throw money out of the window, let me know and I can send you my address.

So we know oscillating blades are important to help your job get done quicker and easier. We know a sharp blade doesn’t put as must stress on your tools. We know that quality oscillating blades cost a lot.  And we also know that using an oscillating blade can be a gamble because it can get destroyed easily.

So what is the solution?

Sharp Pog

There is a company that claims that they have the solution.  So now you can buy cheap(er) blades and resharpen them.  Or you can use your expensive blades and don’t have to worry about hitting a nail and destroying them.

Sharp Pog

Here is one of those inventions that are so necessary, you think, why didn’t I think of that?  The Shapr Pog is a bunch of grinding wheels put together on a shaft that will sharpen your old, damaged, or worn-out oscillating tool.

The idea behind this tool is the Sharp Pog is attached to a drill that spins the Sharp Pog.  As the Sharp Pog spins, it grinds the oscillating blade down and creates new teeth.  As a note, this will not work with carbide blades

Sounds simple and easy but how does it perform?

Sharp Pog Performance

Sharp Pog

We ended up going on Amazon and buying some cheap oscillating blades.  We then attached it to the multitool and ground down the teeth by running the blade over concrete.  This is what it looks like in about 20 seconds.

Sharp Pog

Now comes the Sharp Pog test, how would this work?  When sharpening a blade, we found it easy to sharpen the blade using the Sharp Pog by leaving the blade on the multitool, just make sure you take the battery off the tool for safety.

All we can say is it’s easy as slicing bread.  The Sharp Pog quickly and easily brought the cheap blade back to life.

Sharp Pog

After about 30 seconds, this is what our blade looked like.  Back to new and ready for some more work.

Sharp Pog

We cut a notch out of a 2×4 and couldn’t tell the difference between the new blade and a blade that was resharpened with the Sharp Pog.  Both cut through the wood with the same effort and same time.

So to sum it up, the Sharp Pog really works and is easy to use.

Sharp Pog Value

So how much does this cost?  You can pick this up on Amazon for $44.95.  Personally, this is a steal.  Think about how many times you can resharpen a blade, they are no longer just a once-and-done.  If you hit a nail, they wear out or get damaged, no worries.  In 30 seconds, I have a brand new blade.  So for $44.95, I save time, and money in the long run, less frustration, and a better end result, it’s worth every penny.

The Wrap Up

The bottom line, the Sharp Pog is the real deal.  This is such a great invention and should be in every tradesman and homeowner’s toolbox.  We know how expensive oscillating blades can be and also how quickly they wear out.  The Sharp Pog will save you money, time, and make your job easier.

Spyder is a brand I am familiar with but not a brand I have had a lot of experience with.  In fact, I haven’t had too many people even bring up their name.  Even when I bring it up, it’s not a name most people know.  However, I did want to let you know about two products they have in their line up which are part of the Spyder Diamond Accessory line.

If you are not familiar with Spyder, they make a variety of power tool accessories like bits, blades, and more.

Spyder Diamond – Wrap Up

As I noted, I don’t have a lot of experience with Spyder. But as far as the few pieces I’ve used I’ve been impressed. And I do know they have a large line of products (80+ pcs. last time I checked) at Lowe’s. I did not do an extensive performance test with these two products so I won’t speak to their longevity or even if they are worth the price.  But I know it’s a company that has some experience in this space and from some people I have talked with, they seem like a decent brand.  Considering Lowes carries this brand, and they average 4.7+ stars in the Lowe’s customer reviews, I’d say they are worth a try.

When it comes to cutting, Diablo is the king, well at least that’s my opinion.  While I like all their cutting accessories like circular saw blades, reciprocating blades, oscillating blades, router bits, and more, it’s the circular saw blade that got me hooked on their line of products.  When I was remodeling my house, I would use their framing blade.  Even though it was a framing blade, it worked great, and best of all, it stayed sharp for a long time.  Today we are talking about Diablo Saw Blades – the Wood & Metal Circular Saw Blade, an industry first, to be specific.

Diablo Saw Blades Overview

Professionals know quality saw blades are extremely important on the job.  Sure, we know they cut, but it goes deeper than that (pun intended).  As jobsites have moved from corded to cordless tools, tool efficiency has become more and more important.  A sharp and high-performance blade will not only make your tools run longer because of less resistance, but it will prolong the life of your tools as they don’t have to work as hard.

This blade is a perfect example as it’s a multi-purpose blade that works on wood and metal. You can cut clean wood and wood with nails without changing blades. The blade doesn’t just do one great and the other OK, the blade actually works great on wood and metal, but best of all, the life isn’t compromised if you are using it on metal.  You would think you could cut one or two pieces of metal and need to change blades, but no, you can use this blade for a long time before you have to think about replacing it.

Diablo Saw Blades Features

Diablo is an industry leader in cutting tools, abrasives, and power tool accessories. They have a blade for almost every cutting tool and application.

Diablo Saw Blades

This is the industry’s first true multi-purpose saw blade. So here is what it can do:

  • Cut wood clean, leaving a nice clean edge
  • Cut wood with nails
  • Cuts wood up to 2-1/4 in. thickness
  • Metal – pipe, tube, angle
  • Stud – channel
  • Cuts metal ranging from 3/32 – 1/4 in. wall thickness
  • 1/4 – 1 in. diameter threaded rod
  • Burr-free cuts on metal

Here are some of the features designed into the blade:

  • Tri-Metal Shock Resistant Brazing – The three-metal brazing system allows carbide tips to withstand hard impacts for durability – wood and metal applications
  • TiCo Hi-Density Carbide – Lasts longer and reduces wear and tear
  • Laser Cut Vents – Traps noise so not as loud and also reduces vibration
  • Perma-Shield Coating – Non-stick coating reduces drag, cumming, and corrosion
  • Chamfer-Alternate Top Bevel (C-ATB) tooth design cleanly shears through wood while providing the durability needed for clean, burr-free cuts in metal

Diablo Saw Blades Performance

Diablo Saw Blades

We attached the Diablo Wood & Metal blade to our Milwaukee M18 Circular saw.  Just to make things clear, this is an old Milwaukee saw that has had a ton of use and abuse.  The saws today are much more efficient than this saw.  The model number is 2630, which I believe came out in 2009 or 2011.

We wanted to cut through a wide range of materials.  So we cut through the following items.  Check out our Instagram to see us cutting through metal.

  • Peg Board
  • EMT Pipe
  • Solid Oak Wood
  • Pine 2×4 with Embedded Lag Screws

Cutting through pegboard is nothing exciting but it does give a good example of a clean cut.  As you can see, there is no chipping, bending, or breaking – just a smooth finish.

Next, we cut through some solid oak.  Using this saw over the years, I know how it feels cutting through different materials such as oak.  I can easily say this cut through the oak faster and cleaner than I have done before.  I could only imagine how well this blade would perform on a newer circular saw.

Diablo Saw Blades

EMT pipe is usually cut with a band saw or a hacksaw but I figured why not?  I knew it would cut through the pipe but I wanted to see it there would be burrs. As expected, it ripped through the pipe like nothing.  What amazed me, was there weren’t any burrs.  Just a nice clean finish cut.

We wanted to see how it would fair with wood and lag screws.  So we embedded a couple lag screws into a 2×4.  Again, it cut through the lags with ease.  In fact so easy, it was hard to tell when we were cutting through the lags.  Normally you can feel when you hit metal.  However, not with this blade.  It cut right through with ease.

Diablo Saw Blades Value

I am a huge Diablo fan.  They aren’t the cheapest but also they aren’t the most expensive.  For the quality you get from Diablo, they can’t be beaten. You can pick these blades up at your local Home Depot.  The price varies depending on the size of the blade and the number of teeth you are looking for.  This blade is the 6-1/2 in. x 32-Tooth Wood & Metal circular saw blade which runs $24.97. A 7-1/4 in. x 36-Tooth Wood & Metal Circular Saw Blade is also available.

For me, it’s a great value.  Sure you can get cheaper blades but you also don’t get the performance you do with these blades.  In fact, I am sure over the long run, you will pay more for the cheaper blades as you will have to replace them more often.  For $25 you get a blade that is a true multi-purpose blade that cuts wood and metal, the blade will last a long time and you get a great end result, how can you go wrong?

Diablo Saw Blades Wrap Up

Bottomline, Diablo is known for its cutting accessories for a reason.  They are strong, reliable, last a long time, and produce a great finish.  These Wood & Metal blades are the first true multi-use blade I have seen.  For a $25 investment, it’s a no-brainer.

When it comes to cutting accessories like circular saw blades, reciprocating saw blades, or jigsaw blades, Diablo has made a name for itself.  They offer anything from a general-purpose blade to a high-quality specialty blade.  Today we are going over two of their reciprocating saw blades and why these are a perfect fit for their family of products.  So let’s jump into the Diablo Metal Reciprocating Saw Blades.

Diablo Blades – Overview

I am a little biased when it comes to Diablo because I love their blades.  My experience with the brand has been nothing but positive so it’s hard for me to not be biased.  Anytime I get a new circular saw or miter saw, the first thing I do is take off the included blade and put my Diablo blade on the tool.  When I need reciprocating blades, I buy Diablo.  Again, it’s because of my experience with the brand.

I recently remodeled my house and that was all I used for my tools, Diablo blades.  I have a Milwaukee table saw and was doing trim work with it.  I installed an Ultra Finish blade on the saw.  When I was done I left it on.  Over the last couple of months, I had to cut some 2×4 and other wood.  Of course, I was too lazy to switch blades so I just ripped with the wrong blade.  Normally I would be a freak at changing blades but I know the Diablo blades are such high quality, it’s hard to ruin or make then dull.  Again, I do not recommend anyone doing this as you should always cut with the correct blade.  But the point was that I trust their blades so much and I know they hold up like no other blade, it didn’t bother me making a rough cut with an expensive blade.

So let’s take a look at two of their reciprocating saw blades.  One is for thick metal (Amped) and the other is for thin metal such as EMT pipe.

Diablo Metal Blades – Amped

The Steel Demon Amped blade is a carbide blade designed for thick metal. Diablo sells both a 6″ and a 9″ blade.  The one we used was the 9″ blade that has 8 TPI.  So what makes this so special?  Let’s take a look because there isn’t just one factor that makes this stand out, there are numerous reasons that this blade stands out above the rest.

Yes, it’s a carbide tip blade but this is TiCo Hi-Density carbide which means it’s designed for performance and designed for extreme conditions like cutting thick metal.

Reason #2 is I.C.E.  This is the first-ever industrial-grade coating, Black Industrial Cooling Element (I.C.E.). The ultra-slick Black I.C.E. provides the coolest and cleanest cutting edge, which in return provides superior chip evacuation.

Reason #3 is the blade is designed with a 1″ oversized blade body which not only provides stability but also provides straighter cuts with less vibration.

Reason #4 is Perma-Shield.  Perma-Shield resists heat build-up by protecting it from corrosion and gumming up.

So with these four reasons, that is why this is such a superior blade compared to others in the same field.  The Steel Demon cuts thickness from 3-16″ to 9/16″, has up to 100 times longer cutting life compared to standard blades, and offers 2 times the performance versus standard blades.

Diablo Metal Blades – Steel Demon

If you are looking to cut thinner metal such as metal conduit or metal tubing, you might want to go with the Steel Demon carbide blades. As with the Amped blade, these also come in a 6″ and 9″ length.

These reciprocating saw blades are designed with a high-performance carbide tipped tooth which not only performs better but causes less heat build-up and prolongs the life of the blade.  In fact, these blades can last up to 50 times longer than standard reciprocating saw blades.

Other features of these blades are the Perma-Shield which is a nonstick coating which means less friction and therefore, less heat build-up.  The Carbide strip teeth are milled for a smoother quality cut.

Diablo Blades – Performance

The bottom line, these blades perform.  As you can see, in thick or thin metal, these blades last and perform great.  The cut quality is top-notch and the blades last.  We cut a variety of material and as you can see, these blades perform like a champ.

Amped

We cut through a lot of steel.  We cut through a leaf spring, a rod, and other hardened and thick steel.  The bottom line, this blade is extremely impressive.  Not only did we cut through all that metal with a single blade but it still had life.  While that was a surprise, the speed is what amazed me the most.  I could not believe how fast the blade cut through all this steel.

Steel Demon

As with the Amped blades, we used the Thin Metal blades on a variety of stuff.  Again we couldn’t believe how fast and how smooth the cut was for a reciprocating saw blade.

Diablo Blades – Wrap Up

When it comes to blades, Diablo is the way to go.  While these two blades are great, I love the whole line of Diablo blades.  Yes, I am biased because of my experience with them but if someone or something treats you good, how can you not be biased?  I love the quality and I really think you get Diablo blades for a fair price. Both the Amped and the Thin Metal blade are worth every penny.

When it comes to hole saws, what is the biggest problem?  Yes, the ejection of the plug or the core.  While hole saws are great for drilling larger, uniformed holes, the core ejection is always frustrating.  The core never comes out easily and can be a real pain, especially if you are drilling multiple holes.  If you are drilling multiple holes, trying to pry out a core with a screwdriver is cumbersome and will slow you or your workers down.

Here is what I love about entrepreneurship, someone sees a problem and someone solves that problem.  That is exactly what happened.  A contractor was tired of this problem and figured out a way to solve this problem.  So the contractor designed an ingenious way to quickly and easily remove a core or plug when done drilling your holes.  It doesn’t matter if the plug is a 1/8″ thick or takes up the whole hole saw cavity, it’s just as easy. No more messing around and no more wasting time.

QuickCore Hole Saw – Overview

So what makes this hole saw so special?  The hole saw uses a quick change sleeve with a 3 pin locking system.  So as a user, when I am done cutting my hole, I pull back on the sleeve and take the cup off.  The drill bit stays intact on the mandrel so now I have access to push the plug through with my finger.  Trust me, it really can’t be easier.

While this design is awesome for removing plugs, it also allows the user to quickly change hole saw sizes on the fly.  So no messing around with removing the mandrel from the drill, no more trying to unscrew the head to change sizes.  Just pull back on the quick-change system and attach your hole saw.

The QuickCore uses a 3 pin locking system so you can be assured that the hole saw will stay attached to the mandrel, even under heavy use.

Overall, it’s just one of the products you look at and think, why didn’t I come up with that idea?

QuickCore Hole Saw – Features

The QuickCore Hole Saw kit has many features that benefit the end-user.  Here are a few important features:

  • 10X faster core ejection
  • The QuickCore mandrel design enables the user to quickly change hole saw sizes.
  • Wide slots and open back arbor helps with cooling and longevity of the hole saw.
  • Designed for wood, metal, plastic, and stainless steel.
  • 10° positive angle for fast and smooth cuts.

QuickCore Hole Saw – Impressions

QuickCore Hole Saw

The hole saw kit comes in a hard plastic case for storage, easy transportation and provides protection when not in use.

QuickCore Hole Saw

When you open the case you will see 9 hole saws, the arbor and two bits, plus a hex key to change drill bits.  Here is what’s in the case – 3/4″, 7/8″, 1 1/8″, 1 3/8″, 1 1/2″, 1 3/4″, 2″, 2 1/8″, 2 1/2″ Hole Saws, Arbor, 2 Pilot Drill Bits, Hex key.

QuickCore Hole Saw

Here is what the hole saw looks like when all put together and inserted into a drill.

So this is the magic.  Scroll through the pictures and you can see how easy it is to use and remove plugs.

QuickCore Hole Saw

The arbor is solid and not some cheap arbor.  You can easily access to change drill bits and clean.

While the whole set up is great and makes removing cores easy, let’s not forget about the performance.  For me, I think it’s fast when cutting holes.  You can watch the video below to see for yourself.

QuickCore Hole Saw – Wrap Up

The bottom line, this is the best hole saw kit on the market.  Sure as a user, you have many options.  But what I love about this kit, is the simplicity to use and change bits.  I love the speed at taking out the cores when done making my holes.  I love the peace of mind that the hole saw cups will stay in place even after drilling for long periods of time.  If you use hole saws, even once a month, the price is well worth it.  This kit solves a problem and saves you time and money.

Makita has one of the largest 18V lines of cordless power tools.  But did you also know they are one of the leaders in power tool accessories, especially bits?  Let’s face it, you can have the most powerful, fastest and best power tool on the market but if your bits can’t keep up with it, what good is the power tool?  So let’s take a little time and talk about the Makita Impact XPS Accessories.

Makita Impact XPS Overview

As you know, cordless power tools are getting stronger and stronger.  One of the biggest downfalls to powerful tools is that bits can not keep up with the more powerful tools.  So manufacturers are always trying to create a new bit that will not only outlast and perform but won’t break the bank, which brings me to the Makita Impact XPS bits.

The Makita line of Impact XPS bits is the newest bits from Makita. They are designed to work in conjunction with the high-torque demands of professionals and their professional tools. In fact, they are designed to last up to 90 times longer than standard bits.

Makita designed these bits to be an exact fit.  They are machine bit tips to fit fasteners with minimal variance. They are engineered with pulse torsion rings which distribute force and prevents breakage.  On top of all that, they are designed with a unique blend of steel.   The Carbon alloy steel flexes under high demand use and makes the bits last longer.

Makita Impact XPS Accessories Bit Set

Makita offers three different kits that come in a hard plastic case.  The case securely locks and the bits stay in place.  For me, one of the best features is how secure the bits stay n the holder but they are not impossible to take out as I have seen with other bit cases.

Another advantage of this kit is you can either take a row out if needed or you can change the layout of the case as each row is removable.

You can buy either a 60 piece, 45 piece or 35 piece kit.

Makita Impact XPS Socket Sets

Not to leave anything behind, Makita also has a couple of different options with the Impact XPS sockets.  They offer four different configurations.  I like how the set comes with the adapter and how easy it is to get the sockets in and out.  While I love the 6 point sockets and the walls are thick, I do wish the sizes were easier to read. Yes, it’s etched into the socket but having a background color to easily identify the size would make life a little easier.

The sockets have a black oxide finish and heat-treated alloy steel which is great for high torque applications.

Makita Impact XPS Power Bits

Makita offers a wide range of power bits in 2 packs, 3 packs, 10 Packs, 15 packs, and 25 packs.

As you can see with the bits, they have a torque zone that allows the bit to flex instead of just snapping.

Makita Impact XPS Nutsetters

A good nutsetter is always good to have on hand.  This set comes with the common sizes, 1/4″, 5/16″ and 3/8″ in which all three are magnetic.

Makita Impact XPS Wrap Up

As we stated above, this is not a review but rather an introduction to the Makita Impact XPS bits.  Follow us on Instagram as we will be using these around the shop and my house addition.  Considering what we have seen from Makita in the past, we have full confidence these bits will perform in the long run.  We love the Gold bits and other power tool accessories.  So if you are looking for impact bits, this would be a good line to look into.  If you have tried these, please leave a comment below.

Diablo is known for its high quality, longevity and all for a reasonable price.  Today we are going to introduce you to some of the additions to their ever-growing family.  They recently released new step drill bits, sanding block, HVAC blade and blades.  So let’s jump into the new Diablo Accessories.

Diablo Step Drill Bits

Diablo has 6 new step drill bits.

  • 1/2″ – 6 steps
  • 1/2″ – 13 steps
  • 3/4″ – 9 steps
  • 7/8″ – 12 steps
  • 1-1/8″ – 17 steps
  • 1-3/8″ – 15 steps

These bits are designed for fast drilling and maximum durability, which means you should get longer run time per charge on your cordless tools.  The bits are designed with a split point tip (132°).

The design uses an automated CNC grinding process which delivers high angle tolerances for minimal wear and an optimized flute design for jam-free cuts.  The bit features a 3/8″ shank with 3 flat sides which prevents shank slippage.

They designed these bits with an increase step height for common size holes and an easy to read laser mark for other holes.

These bits are designed for PVC, other plastics and up to 1/8″ thickness metal which means these are great for electrical, plumbing and HVAC work.

Diablo Reusable Sanding Block

Anyone looking for reusable sanding sheets and blocks for flat or contour surfaces, this is a must-have.  The hook and loop system allows the user to clean the block and sanding pad for longer and more efficient uses.

The kit comes with the dense foam pad which also has a custom area for contouring areas.  It also comes with 80, 120 and 220 sheets which makes it perfect for wood, metal, and plastics.

Diablo HVAC Reciprocating Blade

Not to leave anyone behind, Diablo released the 3-1/4″ HVAC/Ductwork reciprocating blade.  The blades are bi-metal and feature a 32 TPI design. The blades have smaller gullets which makes the cutting easier and there is also less vibration.

Like they say on TV, that’s not all. The blades have a coating which resists heat build-up by protecting the blade against gumming and corrosion.

Diablo Blades

Diablo also released 2 new blades for masonry.  They are offering a diamond rim blade in both a 4-1/2″ and 5″ size.  The blades should last up to 4 times longer than a standard diamond disk which means less changing, less money, and more efficiency.

One blade is a continuous rim blade while the other blade is a segmented turbo blade which means between the two you can cut granite, marble, porcelain, tile, concrete, brick, block and more.

Diablo Wrap Up

If you have been following us, you know we are a fan of Diablo.  We love the quality and the price of their products.  In fact, one of the first things I do when I get a saw is replace the OEM blade with a Diablo blade.

If you are looking at power tool accessories and haven’t checked out Diablo, it’s well worth it to get to know them and try some of their stuff out.

Over the years, Ryobi has stepped up their game.  What was once a budget, no name tool has now become one of the best selling tools.  One of the reasons is that Ryobi has changed the way they think about tools and accessories.  Today Ryobi focuses on the consumer professional features at homeowner prices and they have been extremely successful with this formula.  Time and time again, I talk with people about their Ryobi tools and I always hear how happy people are with their purchase.  So today, let’s take a look at the Ryobi Impact Kit and see if this fits their formula for success.

Tools are becoming more powerful as technology advances.  With that being said, it only makes sense to produce better and stronger bits, but it’s not always easy to do.  So let’s see what Ryobi has to offer.

Ryobi Impact Kit Information

Ryobi Impact Kit Features

Ryobi Impact Kit

The Ryobi impact kit offers a 70 piece impact-rated kit all for under $20.

The bit comes in a nice plastic case that is easy to open and close.  The last is robust so if you drop the case, it shouldn’t come open.  However, when you want to open the case, it snaps open easily.

Ryobi Impact Kit

Once you open the kit, you can easily see what bits are inside and identify the bit you need.

Ryobi Impact Kit

A cool feature of this case is you can take out a row if you don’t need it or just want the holder because you might not need the whole case for the application.  Such as if your climbing up a ladder and don’t need the whole case.  You can take out a row, throw it in your pocket or tools belt and still have a hand free.

The bits are built to withstand high demand tools such as impact drivers. The 2″ bit features a Torsion zone that absorbs high torque and makes the bit not only withstand more but last longer.

Ryobi Impact Kit Impressions

Ryobi Impact Kit

When it comes to power tool accessories, you have a lot of manufacturers to pick from.  For me, I like the Ryobi bits.  They fit the fasteners snug, they don’t cost a lot and you get a wide variety of bits and accessories in this kit.

For me, the biggest plus of these bits is the fit.  Too many times I have used sub-par accessories only to cause problems with fasteners getting stripped.  With the Ryobi, they fit great and don’t see a problem of them stripping fasteners.

Ryobi Impact Kit Wrap Up

Over all, these are great bits.  They are inexpensive and as noted, they fit snug with fasteners.  I like the case and love the variety of bits in this kit.  Considering it’s only $20, with the case, it’s easy to say this is a great buy for the homeowner and even the professional.

Concrete is the cornerstone for any foundation, road, sidewalk, stairs and more.  Concrete is tough, it can take a beating, stand up to harsh condition and last a lifetime.  However, there is a trade-off.  With concrete being so tough, it also means you need a tough bit that can withstand the daily use of drilling holes.  You might not think a bit is all that important and what’s the difference between competitor “A” and competitor “B”.  Well, there is a difference, a big difference.

Having a good bit means a lot.  A quality bit can drill more holes which usually means monetary savings.  A quality bit drills cleaner holes, which means less hassle.  A quality bit can cut through concrete more efficiently which means your cordless tools will run longer per charge.  It also means less heat build-up with your power tool and longer life.

So yes, there is a difference between bits which brings me to the Bosch Blue Granit Turbo Bits. According to Bosch, these bits have 5 times the life as their competitor and drill 2 times faster.

Bosch Blue Granite Turbo Bits – Information

Bosch Blue Granite Turbo Bits – Features

Believe it or not, there is a lot that goes into the design and manufacturing of a concrete drill bit.  The Bosch Blue Turbo bits have some pretty cool features that make them stand out verse their competitors.

  • Designed to deliver up to 5 times the life and 2 times the speed
  • Hex shank means this will work with high impact drivers
  • 4-gind head creates more angles for longer life and faster drilling
  • Carbide center makes it easy to start in brick and masonry
  • Milled U-flutes makes faster and cleaner dust removal

Bosch Blue Granite Turbo Bits – Impressions

We have been using Bosch Blue Granite bits for a while and have had nothing but great luck with them.  While we didn’t test their claim to drilling twice as fast, I can tell you it drills much faster than the traditional concrete bits.  The bits also seem to last longer.  If you have ever bought a cheaper bit, you know they quickly wear out.  With the Bosch, they just last longer.

If you start out with a slow throttle and then ramp up as the bit grabs into the concrete, these bits work awesome.  Very clean and very fast. The debris is quickly brought up through the flute to the surface so it’s not double cutting and causing premature wear on the bits.

The one thing I would like to see different is the packaging.  I wish they had these in the hard plastic custom cases that Bosch offers.  Yes, I know concrete bits don’t have the life of other accessories but it would be great to have a hard case for those who toss it in a bag and don’t want the soft case opening up where the bits can get ruined.

Besides the quality of the bits, I love how you can use them with a hammer drill and even an impact which makes these a very versatile bit for the job site.

Bosch Blue Granite Turbo Bits – Wrap Up

Bottom line, the $19 investment is worth it.  The bits are high quality and easily cut through concrete. The fact you can use this with a drill or impact makes them better than your standard bit for about the same price.

Diablo Blades – First Impressions

Before I got into this business, I didn’t know about everything that went into making a blade.  I always thought a saw blade was a saw blade.  The only thing I knew back in the day was that the Diablo blade always seemed to perform better than the rest.

After some time and being in the business, I have learned that not all blades are created equal.  There is a lot that goes into research and development as well as manufacturing.  In fact, making a saw blade is not an easy task, well if you do it right.

Diablo has been in the business for a long time and their name has a proven track record.  Look around different job sites and homeowners garage’s and you will certainly see a wide variety of Diablo blades installed on saws.  I use them on my circular saw, miter saws, and table saws.

While there are a lot of features that go into the blades, all I know is that not only do the blades last me a long time, but they always produce a great finish cut.  What amazes me, even their framing saw blade leaves a great cut.  If you have been following us on Instagram, then you have seen us using these blades and touting how much we love them.

Diablo Blades – Wrap Up

I have been using Diablo blades since I bought my first saw.  They last, they stay true and they offer the best bang for the buck.  So yes, I would highly recommend these blades to anyone buying a saw.  In fact, when I buy a saw, I usually just put aside the blade that came with the saw and install a Diablo blade. If you don’t believe me, check out their reviews on The Home Depot and you will see a ton of happy customers.

If you haven’t heard of them yet, Fisch is a company that was founded and is still based in Austria. They have been manufacturing premium drill bits since 1946. Fisch is especially known for making top of the line Forstner bits such as the Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits. They do this by forging their drill heads which yield extremely sharp edges that stay sharp for a very long time.

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review Overview

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review

People who are into woodworking can tell you that it is a lifetime journey you take to perfecting the craft. Every step of the way you are learning. Whether it be a new technique you learn, a new tool you discover that you must absolutely have or what works best to get the job done, you are always learning.

Forstner bits are one of those tools you learn about quickly when you have a need to make flat bottom holes. At first, you see it as a tool you are only going to need one or two times in your life.  After you use a Forstner bit, you quickly find that it is extremely useful and uses for it seems to pop up everywhere.

Now if you only occasionally use Forstner bits you might think that they are all the same.  This is not true. There are basically three types of Forstner bits such as the sawtooth, continuous rim and wavy continuous rim. The differences in these types come mostly from how the cutting edges are designed. The Fisch Black Shark Forstner bits fall under the continuous rim style bit.

From each design, the performance and life of use will depend on not only how the bit was made, but how it is used. In the text that follows, I hope to show you how and why the Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits really stand out as one of the very best bits produced.

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review Features

First and foremost, the heads on these drill bits are forged.  You may be asking yourself, “Why is a forged drill head better than a cast drill head?” right now. Good questions. A forged head is stronger, more uniform and more reliable than a cast steelhead. Not only is the head better protected from accidental impacts to the cutting edges they will also stay sharp much longer than their cast counterparts.

Extremely sharp cutting edges and flats for great chip removal.

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review

3 flats located on the shaft help hold the drill from spinning in the chuck.

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review

A very prominent centering pin.

These bits are available in both imperial and metric sizes.  For the purpose of this review, I have been using the 16-piece imperial set. These bits can also be purchased separately.

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review Performance

The performance of these Forstner bits is unlike anything that I have ever seen. They cut very clean and sharp holes in both hardwoods and softwoods but were specifically designed for cutting hardwoods. If you ever tried to cut holes in any real hard exotic woods like purple heart, you will quickly realize how hard they are on regular Forstner bits. After a few holes with a cheaper Forstner bit, you will quickly notice that there is more burning of the wood going on than cutting.

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review

The Fisch Black Shark Forstner bits are manufactured in such a way that you can operate these bits at a 25% higher speed than other bits of the same size. This is possible due to the optimization of the cutting edges.

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review Value

Picking a value for these Fisch Black Shark Forstner bits is a little bit tough. At a price of about $399.00 for the complete 16-piece set found online, these can be a very hard sell for someone who is just playing around with woodworking. Most weekend woodworkers are trying to save up for their next piece of shop equipment they need and can’t justify that kind of price tag for a set of bits. Also if you are someone who has never used a bit of this caliber, it’s hard to imagine it performing that much better than a cheap set. This is where years of experience come into play.

For the woodworker looking to take his or her craft to the top level or someone who makes woodworking items for a living, these bits can perform at the level you wish to achieve. In this case, performance and long life can justify the price tag.

Fisch Black Shark Forstner Bits Review Final Thoughts

The Fisch Black Shark Forstner bits are by far the best Forstner bits I have ever used. As a matter of fact, they are THE BEST BITS of any type that I have ever used.

It seems strange to me to be this impressed with a drill bit, but after using these bits, I have come to find out what I have been missing all of these years.

I know many people out there will get sticker shock when they see the price of this full kit, but don’t give up. Chances are you won’t need to use every bit every time. You always have the option to purchase each individual bit when the opportunity arises. That way you can spread the cost of these bits out over time and only buy the ones you really need.

I am truly amazed at how well these bits perform and I am glad to know they will help me turn out beautiful woodworking pieces for a great many years to come.

When it comes to nails and wood, they are a perfect match.  When drilling holes, we always seem to find the only nail in wood.  So here is Bosch’s answer to the old problem of ruining spade bits when you hit a nail, it’s the Bosch Nail Strike.  The Nail Strike is designed to not only eat through wood but also eat through nails and not ruin the bit.

Bosch Nail Strike – Information

  • Name – Bosch Nail Strike 7/8-in Woodboring Drill Bit
  • Model – NS1011
  • Price – $11
  • Where to BuyLowes
  • More Information – Nail Strike
  • Bosch ReviewsBosch Power Tool Reviews

Bosch Nail Strike – Features

The Bosch bit is designed to use with a high torque setting on low speed. As of today, Bosch offers 6 different sizes – 1/2″, 5/8″, 3/4″, 7/8″, 1″ and 1-1/4″

  • Cuts up to 30 nails
  • The bit has a cone shape to pull through the wood
  • Designed to cut fast holes
  • Contoured paddle enhances chip removal
  • Works with impact drivers
  • Hex Shank

Bosch Nail Strike – First Impressions

My first impression of the Nail Strike is “a must-have.” While this isn’t a review, this is something I had a chance to play around with at the shop, at the World of Concrete and at Bosch.

If you have used a Spade bit and hit a nail, not only do you know it jerks the arm but it will also damage the bit.  While this will still wake you up when you hit a nail, it’s not even close to the movement you get with a traditional Spade bit.

Bosch Nail Strike – Final Thoughts

When it comes to Spade bits, Bosch has always been one of my favorites.  The new Nail Strike is another example of why I am a huge Bosch fan.  The bit is awesome and even produces a fairly clean hole.  I love how quick and easy it chews up nails and wood. Sure, it’s a little pricey per bit, but not when you consider that it can take up to 30 nail strikes while a traditional bit won’t even take one.  So all in all, it’s a good value and a great bit.

Apex Bits – First Impressions

Apex Bits

This isn’t a review of Apex bits, it’s an introduction.  As a user, I can’t tell you these are the best, worst or middle of the line bits.  However, I do know Apex and how quality and longevity is a top priority.  I also know they have the capabilities (probably more than some of the brand names we know) of producing high-quality bits.

From my use around the shop, I did notice they have an extremely great fit, even in a Phillips head.  I have been building a workbench, miter stand and more and have been using the bits.  Usually, I am swearing when using Phillip bits, but so far the bits have been great with little cam out.

Apex Bits – Final Thoughts

Again, it’s hard to really say if these are better bits than a name you know.  For me, I like these bits and maybe because it’s a name I know and the quality of products they put on the market.  I would love to hear what others have experienced with these bits and their opinion on the Apex bits.

It is amazing how many job sites have changed over the last decade.  Not only do we deal with better power tools, but we also work with better materials.  With these newer materials, we sometimes need better accessories.  We need better accessories to not only keep up with the more powerful power tools, but we need these to work with the better materials. We need to make multiple cuts and can’t be slowed down by sub-par accessories.  So speaking of better accessories, the Milwaukee Torch looks to be the answer.  The torch is a carbide blade made to last cut after cut.

Overview

Carbide blades are becoming a lot more popular.  While they are still a specialty blade and difficult to manufacture, they have become a more attractive alternative.

Carbide blades are more expensive for the initial purchase however they last longer and perform better than the tradition metal reciprocating saw blades. So when you are looking for performance, Carbide blades have shown time and time again that they perform even under harsh conditions.

We have used other manufacturers blades on the market.  The one thing you will notice is how fast and how long carbide lasts.  Sure they have a higher upfront cost, but in the end, the speed and blade life will more than enough pay for itself.

We cut some rebar and cast iron.  The blade did an outstanding job.  When I worked on my house, I used one of the blades to cut through our cast iron bathroom vent and the blade was able to not only keep up, but we didn’t chip any teeth.  We also used it to cut out some old Armored Cable.

Milwaukee Torch –  Final Thoughts

When it comes to a reciprocating saw, we know the Milwaukee Sawzall is king.  With their Torch blades, they are pushing hard to make a system with a tough carbide blade to go along with the tough Sawzall.  While the blade is pricey up front, in the long run, you will save money with less frustration, fewer problems, and a longer life blade.
