One of my favorite tools is the router.  I love being able to add fine details to a great woodworking project.  A router lets you take a rectangle piece of wood that is a little boring and sup it up to make it look like an expensive piece of wood that was done by a seasoned woodworker veteran.  There are different types of routers such as fixed or plunge routers, but today we are going to talk about trim routers.  So let’s jump into the Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router Overview

Metabo also recently released a cordless fixed/plunge router, which you can see in the video below to learn more about it.  As you would expect, not everyone needs or wants a bigger router.  So that is where a trim router comes into play.  And now Metabo HPT has a cordless trim router for your fine detailing needs.

Check out the Metabo Fixed/Plunge cordless router.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router Features

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router

This is Metabo HPT’s first cordless router, model M1808DAQ4.  The router only weighs 2.5 lbs. and will accept both 1/4″ and 3/8″ shanks. The router also features a brushless motor for longevity and run time.

The kit comes with a 1/4″ and 3/8” collet, trimmer guide, straight guide, template, dust collection port, and a bit wrench.

The router can be powered by any of the Metabo HPT batteries or even the MultiVolt battery for more power.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router

Not all trim routers have a thin body, but Metabo HPT designed this with one of the thinnest bodies we’ve seen which means it’s easier to handle and control.

The router has a safety feature so a user doesn’t accidentally turn it on.  Just press the button and the router wakes up and is ready to go.

Just above this push button is the variable speed dial which has speeds from 10,000 to 30,000 rpm.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router

Once the unit is powered on, Metabo HPT designed it with a push-button switch to turn the router on and start the bit spinning.  For me, this is one of the most comfortable and best positioned on/off switches I’ve seen on a trim router.  You can turn the router on with one hand and still have complete control of the router and your work.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router

As with other routers, this has a clamp lever to adjust the base quickly and easily.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router

The base is clear so you can easily see your working area.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router

The two LED lights do an awesome job of lighting up your working area.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router Performance

For me, I love this Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router.  I like how thin the body is and I can easily grab and control the router.  I like the fact that the base is clear so I can easily see my working area, plus the LED lights do an awesome job at lighting up the area.  The variable speed allows me to fine-tune the router to my project which is a huge plus.

Setting the depth is smooth and easy.  One of my favorite features is the placement of the on/off switch.  No more do I have to mess with using two hands when starting or stopping the router.  I can easily turn on or kill the power with my finger and I still have control over the router and my project.

One huge advantage that everyone can agree on is the cordless features.  It’s so nice not having to deal with a cord getting in the way.

Metabo HPT Cordless Trim Router Value

As of this article date, the router is new and not on shelves.  The launch date is early August 2021.  So if you are reading this after, you can click on the link to check out more about the router.

You can buy this on Amazon for $150.  For me, this is a decent value.  I like the power, the versatility, and the control.  So for $150, it’s worth it, especially if you are already in the Metabo HPT line and have a battery and charger.

Final Thoughts

The bottom line, Metabo HPT created an awesome cordless trim router.  The router is built tough, easy to work with, and versatile.  Not sure what else you want in a trim router but this is giving the competition a run for their money.

I remember when I bought my first router, which was a Porter Cable router, it was one of my favorite tools.  Then I wanted a router table but there wasn’t a lot to pick from and they were expensive.  So I turned my table saw into a router table.  I extended my table saw top and when I did that, there was a gap.  So I built a wood insert that I could take out when not needed.  When I used it, I could use the table saw fence which worked well.  As time has passed, router tables have become more abundant and not as expensive, which brings me to our topic today, the SKIL Router Table.

SKIL Router Table Overview

SKIL does have another router table in the marketplace, but they recently introduced a new router table, model SRT1039 which is what we are talking about today.  So don’t confuse this with their older model, RAS900.

This new model has a couple of new twists to make this not only different than their older model but it’s also different from their competition.

SKIL Router Table Features

The SKIL router table is 18″ tall and features an above-the-table router lift.  This gives you easy access to router bits with the above table adjustment.

Skil Router Table

The top of the router measures 26″x16″ and is MDF, which makes 416 sq in or work surface.

Skil Router Table

The tabletop has easy-to-read markings on both sides so you can make sure your fence is straight.

As you know, routers make a mess.  The fence has a great integrated cover to help minimize wood shavings from flying around.  If you own a dust collection system, you can even attach that to help eliminate a majority of the mess.

One of the best features of this table is the wide base which steadies it.  You can even anchor the router table to your workbench by using clamps or fasteners.

On each side of the router table, the legs open up and you can store bits and other items inside.  The router table also comes with two removable trays which can be opened on both sides.

On the front, there is an integrated on/off switch so you don’t have to fumble underneath to turn the router on/off.  The table features two plugs so you can turn on the router and dust collector with one switch on the front.

Another great feature is the aluminum plate.  You are able to mount almost any router and quickly mount or remove it from the table.

The table comes with a bunch of accessories like a miter gauge, rings, and feather boards.

SKIL Router Table Performance

Skil Router Table

Two items I noticed right from the start; the first is how stable the table is.  When working on this table, it isn’t wobbling or sliding around.

Skil Router Table

The second and my favorite is how smooth the tabletop is.  I can easily slide my work around and have complete control.

While I like the fence, I am not a huge fan of how the fence is anchored in place.  This isn’t a SKIL thing, actually, all router tables use this system.  I just wish something would come around that has a rack & pinion system or something other than using bolts to secure the fence.  Again, it’s nothing against this specific table as they all work this way.

I have been using the Bosch for a long time, which you can see above.  While I like the router table, I am not a huge fan of the two pieces.  For me, the SKIL is much smoother than the more expensive Bosch.  The Bosch has a little dip between the metal plate and the MDF top.  No matter what I do, I can not get the two to stay matched up so they are the same height.  I can’t tell you how many times this difference between the two heights has wreaked havoc on my work.

SKIL Router Table Value

The router table will retail for $159 on Amazon.  Overall this is a decent value.  The table is sturdy, easy to use, the top is smooth, and the storage is a nice added touch.

Final Word

When it comes to router tables, the SKIL router table is a great option.  The table is stable and the top is smooth so it’s easy to work with.  The fact you can store bits on the side and easily detach a router makes this a desirable router table.  For $159, it’s a hard table to beat.

When I think of routers, I think Porter-Cable and Bosch.  I think Porter Cable because that was my first router.  I think Bosch because they have an awesome palm router that I love.  To be honest, I never thought about Skil for Routers. However, I am not sure what is going on with Porter-Cable, they kind of fell of the map so not sure if that is one I would invest in.  So when I found out Skil had a router and I was looking for a new router, I figured why not give this Skil Router a shot.

Skil Router Overview

To be honest, I wasn’t thinking much about the Skil router.  Sure they have a great name and good tools but I didn’t know where they stood on woodworking tools.  So I thought it was just one of those tools they released to release one.  All I can say is that I was wrong.  If you are looking for a router, keep reading.

This router blew us away on performance, features, and price.

Skil Router Features

Skil Router

Skil designed this router with a 2.5 hp motor that is 14 amps and delivers a no-load speed of 10,000 to 25,000 RPMs.

Some of the included features that you can not see are the soft start and electronic feedback which keeps the motor maintaining a consistent rpm during loads.

The tool also features a live tool indicator which is an indicator that lights up when the plunge router is connected to power.

Skil Router

The router comes with a variety of extras which include: parallel guide, fixed base, dust extraction adaptor, plunge base dust extraction adaptor, 1/4″ & 1/2″ collets, and collet wrench.

One cool feature that I haven’t seen before is the LCD display.  This display lets the user select the bit type and material for suggested speed settings based on the task at hand.

Skil Router

The router handles have a nice rubber grip and they are large enough to have complete control over the router.

The router is easy to set up with three coarse depth settings with a micro-depth adjustment.

Skil Router

The router accepts both 1/4″ and 1/2″ shank bits.

It doesn’t matter if you want a fixed base or plunge, the router has both.

Skil Router Performance

Skil Router

Working with the router and setting it up is extremely easy.  Set your bit, your speed or wood type, and your set to go.  The tool will do the rest.  When I first saw this had a screen and buttons, I was taken back because I am just used to a variable speed dial.  But after using it and seeing how intuitive the router is and how it sets it up for you, I am wondering why more routers don’t have these features.

Skil Router

Once it’s set up, power was my concern.  When working with hardwood will it bog down?  Will it rip up softwoods?  The answer is “no” to both.  The router is powerful enough to go through hardwood, but it doesn’t make you fight the power when going through softwood.  I don’t feel the torque or anything else would hamper my ability to be precise, effective, and safe when using this router.

The bottom line, the performance of this router is much more than I expected.  Easy to use, easy to set up, and easy to work with, oh yeah, and powerful.

Skil Router Value

You can pick this up on Amazon for $122.  I had to double-check the price because, for $122, it’s a no-brainer.  I would have thought this would have been closer to $199 or higher.  If you are looking for a router, pick this up, it’s a steal.

Skil Router Wrap Up

If you are looking for a great router that is powerful, easy to use, and doesn’t cost a lot, this Skil router has to be your go-to router.  Plain and simple, it’s worth every penny and then some.

Battery technology has come a long way.  It’s amazing to think of all the different high demand tools that can be run off batteries.  No longer is it just a drill and impact, now you can run breakers, saws and more.  So speaking of a high demand tool, let’s check out the Milwaukee Cordless Router Review and see if this is something a battery can truly power and make this a workable tool.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review Overview

So when it comes to woodworking, what companies do you think of?  Probably not Milwaukee Tools.  Heck, even Milwaukee says they aren’t going into woodworking tools and that isn’t their business.  So here is the problem I have with that.

I think Milwaukee needs to hit woodworking hard for a couple of reasons.  First, they have the know-how.  When they jump into categories, they dominate. Second, they already have woodworking tools and they are some of the best.  I have an older plug-in router that is awesome.  I call it the sleeper because no one talks about it but it’s one of the best-built routers. Take their miter saws, again a top performer.  Another reason they need to jump into woodworking tools, one word, batteries.  Batteries have come so far and Milwaukee is one of the tops when it comes to power tool batteries.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review Features

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review

The router is built around a brushless motor and is designed to compete against its corded counterpart.  The router generates 1.25 peak horsepower when pairing with a Milwaukee 5 Ah battery.

The 5 Ah battery is part of the Milwaukee M18 line, which offers a huge range of other power tools.  Now you can use this router with a smaller amp hour battery or even their 9 Ah or 12 Ah battery but I think it feels and works best with the 5 Ah battery.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review

The 2723-20 is a bare tool and comes with the following:

  • 1/4″ Collet; 4″ Round Sub-base Plate
  • 5-3/4″ Template Sub-base plate
  • 11/16″ collet wrench
  • 7/16″ Spindle wrench
  • Dust Shroud
  • Fixed Base
  • Straight Edge Guide

The variable speed dial is located towards the top of the tool so it’s easy to adjust on the fly.  You can adjust the speed from 10,000 to 31,000 rpms.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review

The on/off toggle switch is dust sealed.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review

There is a small dial for fine-tuning and micro-adjustments.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review

On the router, there is etched in measurements that comes in handy.

On the backside of the tool, there is rubber over-mold which makes working with the router safer and easier to hold onto instead of just metal.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review Performance

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review

All I can say is I absolutely love this router.  The router is smooth and easy to work with.  Sure it’s for certain applications but for a cordless router, it rocks. I can use large bits and the router has no problem keeping up with me or the bit.

I love how compact it is and easy it is to maneuver around.  Changing speed while working with the tool is also easy.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review

For this project, I was making stairs.  So I used a large bit to get a nice rounded edge.  As I said before, it has no problem keeping up with me or the work at hand.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review Value

You can pick this router up at The Home Depot for $179 which is the bare tool.  The price isn’t bad.  While it’s a little higher than some competition, they can justify it with the quality, the ease of use and the power.  So in the end, the price is fair.

Milwaukee Cordless Router Review Final Thoughts

The bottom line, I love this router.  I can’t really think of any negatives or issues with the router.  I love everything from the build quality to the ease of use, to the comfort.  This is one example of why that Milwaukee needs to enter the woodworking category.

A router lets your true creativity come out.  It can take a normal piece of wood and turn it into something beautiful.  When it comes to fine woodworking, a router is one of those tools that is a must.  This brings me to the Dewalt DW618 Router Review.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review Overview

The Dewalt DW618PKB Router is more than just the unit.  We will jump into everything that comes in the kit in a bit.  First, let’s take a step back.  The router dates back to 1915.  The story is interesting and would recommend reading it on Wikipedia.  Lucky for us, Oscar and his son lost a contract with the railroad and now our lives are easier for our woodworking project.

I use routers all the time and own a couple.  I have a cordless router, a full-size router, a palm router and this Dewalt router that I am using in my Bosch Router table.   So let’s take a closer look at this router and why I went with this router for my router table and plunge needs.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review Features

Dewalt DW618 Router Review

The Dewalt DW618PKB is powered by a 2-1/4 hp, 12 amp motor that is designed for power and speed.  The base is a die-cast machined aluminum which means a lither weight router and more durable.

The tool features a soft start and has an electronic variable speed to help maintain speeds under loads.  The speed ranges from 8,000-24,000 rpm.

One feature I have not seen on a router, which I am a huge fan of is the detachable power cord.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review

The router uses a dust-sealed on/off switch.  I like how the top is protected for accidental shutoffs while using the tool.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review

The router features a micro-fine depth adjustment which allows the user to make 1/16″ changes.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review

The router comes with two collets, a 1/4″ and 1/2″.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review

The sides are designed with a rubber over-mold handle.

The plunge base also features a micro-fine depth adjustment of 5/128″.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review Performance

Dewalt DW618 Router Review

I love the power but most importantly, I can’t believe how quiet the router is.  I am going from an old Porter Cable router which was awesome, but it just got to the point it broke down.  The router was extremely loud so it’s nice going to a quiet router that can perform.

So far I am loving this router.  The router is quiet and powerful.  I have it attached to my Bosch router table.  I see some people have had problems with the build quality such as motor or ring breaking.  I have about three hours on the router and so far it has been awesome.  I used it for my 4×4 banisters, some custom trim, and a picture frame.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review

I also love being able to easily take the router from the base on the router table and use the plunge base.

I gave it a 3.5 star for quality, not because I have had any issues, but going online, I am seeing people having problems.  However, most people are going to complain about an issue than give praise.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review Value

You can pick the Dewalt DW618PKB up on Amazon for about $190.  You can pick it up for cheaper if you don’t need the plunge base.  For my use, $190 is an awesome deal.

I love the power and love being able to attach it to my router table when needed.  However, if I need to plunge with the router, I can leave the base attached and just use the plunge without having to unscrew a base.

Dewalt DW618 Router Review Wrap Up

Overall I love this router.  The router is powerful and quiet.  The plunge is smooth and easy to work with.  I have nothing to complain about except I am a little cautious since I have seen others have some problems with the unit.  However, that does seem like it happened rather quickly when they started using it.  Since I have two hours of use and no issues, I am sure my router is solid.

I have always said, a router is simply one of the most powerful and versatile tools in your workshop. For any woodworker, having a good router is right up there with having a good table saw, it is pure necessity. Bosch is easily one of my favorite tool companies for tools like a router where you need consistent and powerful performance. Today we are going to check out an impressive Router from Bosch in the Bosch 1617EVS Router Review.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review Overview

Routers come in all shapes and sizes. Plunge routers, palm routers, fixed base routers and more. There are a huge variety of accessories and tools that can take even those options to the next level. Build a jig and you can use your plunge router to make large circles. Use a router table and your fixed base router has unlimited potential. Things like complex joinery like mortise and tenons and dovetails become fairly simple with a bit of practice. You can even use your router to joint wood edges, or trim edges. It truly is a limitless tool.

Despite all of that, one of the most well-known router uses comes from their ability to add designs to wood edges and making profiles for things like furniture or cabinet doors. You would be hard-pressed to ignore the little bit of something extra a beautiful cove or roman ogee profile can lend a finished piece. Want to take your woodworking to the next level? Well, outside of the table saw, a router is definitely an investment you don’t want to skip.

What sets this router apart from most is that Bosch added in design features that allow it to work even better with my beloved Bosch Router Table. This Router Table is well loved by both hobbyists and professionals, and while I had great success with my existing DeWalt Router in it, I wanted to open up those last few features and see how this combination could improve my shop a bit more.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review Features

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

The Bosch 1617EVS runs on a 12 amp motor with a standard 6-ft cord. The motor also features constant response circuitry to help regulate the start of the router and allow it to maintain consistent speed during use. The double insulated motor provides additional protection as well as the dust-sealed power switch.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

The Router can be used with the switch on the right or left for user preference.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

Adjustable speed settings allow you to control the speed of the bits rotations, from 8000 to 25000 RPMs. This is easily adjusted based on material and bit type.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

For handheld use, the Router includes a base with two hardwood handles that are very comfortable to grip.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

As well Bosch includes the alternate fixed base that is designed to be used when mounting, specifically in the Bosch Router Table to allow adjustments using the T-handle wrench above the table.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

Bosch included a microfine bit-depth adjustment to give better control to bit height, something imperative, especially when using the router for operations like joints where every small degree of measure makes a large impact.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

The coarse adjustment lever allows you to set the desired height quickly, and fine-tune the bit height with the microfine adjustment.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

The Router has a common three-hole base pattern to allow mounting to most standard router tables.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

Bosch includes both standard-sized chucks, 1/4-inch, and 1/2-inch. Additionally, the 2-inch sub-base opening allows a wide variety of bits to be used with this router.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review

Bosch manufactures several optional accessories for this router, included was a chip deflector, 2 chucks, wrenches for the bit and collet changes, and the extended T handle wrench for above table adjustments. You can purchase accessories like alternate bases, template guides, and other optional products to enhance your routers functionality.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review Performance

For me, I quickly installed this router into my Bosch Router Table. One of the biggest things I noticed right off the bat is just how quiet this router is. I have a huge amount of love for my DeWalt 1618 but this Router is significantly quieter. It was easy to install right to the router table, something that made a good initial impression.

I appreciate that they included a well-made hand-held base as well. Safety is key, and good solid handles are important to maintain grip and stability when using a router like this hand-held. Switching between the two bases takes only a matter of seconds which keeps the Router versatile for users who want to use it both in the table and hand-held.

Adjusting the Router is fairly simple, whether coarse or fine the adjustment controls are fairly intuitive. The micro-fine adjustments are incredibly useful when using with the Router table as being able to do the fine adjustments above the table is helpful. I would say one additional tool I would purchase to make the use of this router with its table just a bit better, would be a set of the Bosch offset wrenches. They make a huge difference in how much you have to shift the router to be able to access the chuck. When the goal is to simplify and speed production, every little bit helps.

I had great results with this Router overall. The Router runs incredibly smooth both handheld and mounted in the table. I felt it did excellent on hardwoods as well as softwoods, and combined with the Freud Router Bits, you had a match made in heaven. It performed exactly like I thought it would as it is a well-regarded router from Bosch. The combination of the Router, when used with the Bosch Router Table, is hard to beat. While so many are making the transition to cordless routers, there is still a significant space in your lineup for a solid corded router like this one from Bosch.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review Value

Bosch is known for well-loved professional Power Tools. This Router is no exception to their stellar reputation, and the price is hard to beat too. This Router comes in at $149.00 on Amazon. I would have expected to pay in the mid-200-dollar range for a Router of this caliber and performance so for me I can’t see a single thing to complain about cost wise.

Bosch 1617EVS Router Review Final Thoughts

Bosch is easily one of my favorite power tool manufacturers. While no one brand gets it perfect every time, I have yet to be disappointed by the big blue. The Bosch 1617EVS Router combines everything you could want in a router. Excellent features, more than enough power, easy customization to suit your needs and stellar performance. The best bonus though is this Router is a particularly good value for the performance and features you receive. I know for me, I bought this Router to be mounted in my router table, but I loved it standalone too. All in all, this Router is a great option for those looking for a variety of uses and want to get the performance they need for the tough jobs you may encounter in a woodshop.

I love Routers. It would be difficult to even quantify my affection for these versatile tools that can pretty much do it all. I recently reviewed the Bosch 12V Cordless Palm Router which is an amazing tool and is an awesome addition to the shop. For certain applications that require a bit more power and a bit more precision a full-size router is needed to give the best results. This is where the magic Router Table comes in. These tools can take a somewhat cumbersome Router and make it more accurate and easy to use. From creating special joints to detailed trim work, router tables are a pretty great addition to any shop, especially for professionals. I had loads of questions about this Router Table from Bosch, so let’s hop into the Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review.

Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review Overview

Whats not to love about Bosch? They seem to have flooded the market this year with awesome new tools, many of which I have been genuinely blown away by. Its hard to believe the number of things Bosch is involved in, technology and tools are just a portion of their worldwide empire. Over 130 years since their founding, and they still seem to bring the best of the best to the market.

Router Tables come in all shapes and sizes. We have large ones on casters, you have plates sold that can be inserted into an existing workbench, and you have benchtop ones like this model that sort of meld the best of both worlds. You also have a huge variance of materials that they are made from, metal, plastic, melamine, and MDF all come to mind as common components. Digging through the options can be a lot to take on, but when I am not sure of where to start in picking a tool, going for versatility and a trusted brand is reassuring. Benchtop models are available from several manufacturers, but there are a few key features that drew me to the Bosch one.

Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review Features

Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review

The first and most notable feature of the Bosch Router Table is the die-cast aluminum top. The top is thick, sturdy, and meant to last. The top Measures in at 27 inches by 18 inches. The base of the router table is made of ABS plastic.

The aluminum router mounting plate allows for precise leveling and keeps the router stable and secure. The listed measuring marks are helpful as well, with markings in 1/8- inch increments two inches forward and three inches behind the center of the bit. There is a multitude of routers that are listed for compatibility. Hardware is included to cover the possible router choices.

Bosch included a dual outlet switch, allowing the user to connect both the router and dust collection equipment. The switch is powered by a 15-Amp plug with a 6-foot cord. The included switch lock is also included to prevent unauthorized use.

Three mounting plates are included based on the application that snap into the table easily.

The aluminum fence allows for easy adjustments and includes adjustable MDF faceplates. The fence measures 25 1/8 long and 4 7/8 inches high to accommodate taller workpieces.

Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review

The fence also includes a dust collection port that allows for connection to 2-1/2 inch hoses.

Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review

Jointing shims are included which allow you to offset the fences to allow for edge jointing of wood. While you have some limits here, due to bit and table size, it is still incredibly useful.

Bosch included a starter pin and guard to provide support while working with curved pieces.

The clear guard is mounted on the fence and allows for adjustments based on workpiece size. This protects the user from contact to the router bit as well as directs dust into the vacuum port.

There are two featherboards which provide both guidance for a workpiece and as well kickback protection. The 3/4 inch accessory slot allows for use of the included featherboards as well as other optional accessories like a miter gauge that can be purchased seperately.

The included mounting holes and hardware allow for easy mounting to a workbench.

A storage pocket mounts on the side of the table base, for easy storage of accessories.

On the left of the table base is a place for cord storage.

Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review Performance

I used my Dewalt Router Model #DW618PK, which is listed as a compatible router in their manual. Using a quality router will absolutely allow this table to perform at its best. One of the true positive points is the cast aluminum table. I like that both the table and router mounting plate are made of aluminum. As well, the aluminum is easy to clean and wax when needed. The table for me has been level and solid, reinforcing the benefit over other materials we commonly see on router tables.

The fence is also made of aluminum, with attached MDF fronts. The knobs allow for the fence to stay pretty secure, but is something you always should be sure of before you start operating your router table. I used a number of different bits- roman edge, straight, cove, and rabbeting. This is where you really learn the importance of a great fence and how a table differs from free handing. Pairing a solid fence with the featherboards helped to keep the workpiece straight and secure, as well as preventing kickback. The end quality of the cut, as well as the time and effort needed, is significantly less than using a full-size router freehanded.

The safety switch worked well and the lock stayed secure when desired. The jointing shims initially seemed a bit flimsy, but surprisingly they perform as you’d expect. The dust collection worked well when attached to a shop vac, eliminating probably 80% of the dust and debris created by the router. I didn’t have too much trouble adjusting my mounted router making bit changes and adjustments pretty simple. Like with any new tool it just takes a bit of practice to find the process that works best for you. Bosch does offer a table base that allows for adjustments of bits from above the table that can be used with one of their routers. You have to purchase this separately, and runs about $52 dollars at Home Depot.

Overall the assembly was pretty simple. The hardware was good quality, although I would have liked to have seen it a bit more organized. The most tedious part of assembly was leveling the router mounting plate. Doing so relies on adjusting 8 screws to level the router plate and does take a bit of effort. As long as you take your time, the instructions are incredibly detailed and include photographs for easy assembly. I did not mount the table to the workbench yet, as I will build a dedicated workbench for it. All tools like this require a bit of effort to really dial in, but their time savings later are well worth it.

Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review Value

Several things drew me to the Bosch model over other manufacturers when searching for the ideal router table. When you really get down to it, a lot are going to offer similar features. The cast aluminum top stands out at this price point, as most tops are made of laminated MDF or Melamine. I have no problem with those materials in general, but I really wanted a table that would hold up and resist splitting and cracking as well as surface damage. As well, the dual outlet power supply with the safety lock is a win too. I would have liked to see the base made from something other than molded ABS plastic, but its plenty strong and stable. Given the price point, I think anything more would have been pretty impossible to expect.

As I mentioned previously, router tables range significantly. There are a few true budget buys and some that cost multiples of this one. For just under two hundred dollars, I think the Bosch is priced fair. The quality of the components is above average, with the cast aluminum top standing out as the true value-add. You can purchase this model the RA1181 on Amazon for $199.00.

Bosch Bench Top Router Table Review Final Thoughts

When looking at Router Tables, especially in the benchtop category, you will be hard pressed to find a better option than this one from Bosch. Including safety features, accessories, as well as the cast aluminum top and aluminum fence gives you more quality than other router tables in its class. Ultimately, if you’re a home woodworker or hobbyist, or even run a small woodshop this router table is likely all you will ever need.

Routers are a shop staple. Very few tools can add so much beauty and function to your builds, and you’d be hard pressed to find any woodworker that doesn’t own at least one. One router option is a palm router or finish router. I sort of see palm routers as a full-size routers baby brother, compact and portable. Now they aren’t entirely new most manufacturers offer some option for these mini routers and often even cordless options., They all have pretty solid reviews, but despite all the positive aspects, I just never jumped on one. That all changed when I saw an early press photo of the new one from Bosch. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the 12V model that promised power and performance all in one small package. So what makes the Bosch Cordless Router so special? Read on in the Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review to find out.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review Overview

We’ve talked quite a bit about Bosch lately, and it’s completely warranted. The new introductions to their 12V platform, like the 12V Planer have been innovative and well thought out. Bosch has been around since the late 1800’s and is still largely owned by the Bosch family. While they are involved in an incredibly diverse range of businesses, we know and love them for their tools. When buying a staple, like a router, planer, etc, Bosch would be one of my first picks for a professional. Their build quality always stands out as well as their dependability. I haven’t personally used a lot of their 12V line tools, but for Bosch, they have been very popular and are incredibly well regarded. With advances in battery technology, tools we never imagined could go cordless are. With batteries smaller to boot.

I have a lot of love for routers. They are multifunctional, adding beauty and flare to a piece. Adding specialty bits can lead to perfectly cut joints, finish edges and a wealth of other things. There are also several different types of routers. From a fixed base, plunge base, and likely the most common set up in a shop is with a router table. Trim routers are a newer addition to the mix and have grown in popularity in recent years. They allow for quick edge routing and the decrease in weight gives an advantage in quick jobs and portability. Where Bosch decided to take the smaller routers further is to not only use a smaller battery but to change the grip and workpiece contact entirely.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review Features

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

The 12V Cordless Palm Router from Bosch offers 13,000 rpm powered by a brushless motor and weighs in at only 2.2 pounds bare tool. The estimated 23 ft per Ah battery life allows quick jobs to be completed effortlessly.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

The constant speed circuitry monitors and maintains the motor speed for consistent performance. As well the side switch turns with a flick of your thumb for easy on/off control. The onboard battery indicator allows you to easily gauge battery life.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

Bosh designed this Palm Router to be lightweight and well balanced. The grip design is very intuitive and comfortable to use.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

The offset design increases stability over the workpiece giving superior performance and results as the router and grip remain over the workpiece. Traditional palm routers place the grip centered above the bit, which can cause some issues with weight displacement and balance.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

The macro depth adjustment is ideal for initial setting, pressing the black side buttons allows you to eye the ideal depth. The fine depth adjustment knob allows for precise tuning (.04 inches per revolution). There is a fixed adjustment screw that you can turn from the bottom of the tool to lock into the knob and set the height.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

The depth adjustment system features a lock to ensure consistent depth, as well as keeping adjustments ultra precise.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

The spindle lock which is a red latch on the front of the unit. Simply pull the locking bar out to allow the bit to be changed and push in to lock the spindle. Bosch provides an included wrench.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

Bosch included several safety features. The drop detection sensor stops the motor if dropped, and the restart protection prevents the router from restarting accidentally when batteries are changed.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

Finger barriers protect contact with the bit area which can result in significant injury.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review As well the finger rests on the base shoe provide a natural resting place.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review Performance

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review

This router really impressed me. So often a new tool will launch and once you actually get your hands on it, you feel a bit underwhelmed. This tool certainly exceeded my expectations and is everything I expected it to be and more. The bits I used aren’t ultra high end, rather being a Black Friday special from last year. Given that, the cut quality and end finish were very impressive. The battery life is decent too, I was able to get quite a bit out use out of each 2.0Ah battery. The way the bits are inserted keeps the bits secure during use. I appreciate the extra lengths Bosch takes to prevent injury during use too. Features like the motor not starting while the spindle lock isn’t engaged are always important in a tool like this.

Its lightweight, making it comfortable to use and have significantly less wrist fatigue than full-size routers. One thing that stood out to me was the ergonomics. When you use the router, it’s incredibly comfortable and feels natural. I have a router from Dewalt that is an amazing full-size router, but when you are using it free handed you can easily lose control of it, making it a better option for use with a router table. The Bosch router is easy to control, and I had no problem keeping the bit against the wood without an incredible amount of effort.

Additionally, the way the base of the router is designed is probably its second biggest asset. The larger base plate and oblong shape allow for increased security against a workpiece. A traditional router, especially a palm router does not have a ton of material surrounding the bit, making it easy to wobble. Rather than centering the motor and grip, and likely a battery if it’s cordless, directly above the bit, the offset design makes a huge difference in how it sets to the edge of a piece. This is likely why so many people have preferred the use of a router table. Combining this design change with the lighter weight and grip, Bosch allows for truly one hand operation while remaining stable. All in All, this router is a game changer.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review Value

Bosch priced this router Model #GKF12V-25N at $149.00 as a bare tool and can be found on Amazon. If you’re already into the 12V line, the price is a no-brainer. Most compact routers run a bit less than this one, but I feel like the grip, performance, and weight makes it still a good value. The one small improvement would have been to include a case. I think that’s a personal preference of mine for tools like this as it is always a nice touch.

The professional is going to appreciate the excellent build quality as well as the superior results the router gives with its new design. The homeowner will enjoy this router as a very useful and multi-functional tool that has a very small learning curve. For the quality and performance of this router, the price tag is easily justified.

Bosch Cordless Palm Router Review Final Thoughts

Bosch has really come out strong lately. With innovations for all types of tool users, it’s no surprise that this router is incredible. The Bosch 12V Cordless Router uses a considerable amount of technology to achieve the impressive performance and quality in such a small footprint. When Bosch sets out to improve a tool, they don’t hold anything back. For me, this is one of my favorite new tools of 2018. If you’ve been on the fence on purchasing a palm router, this Bosch model may just push you over the edge.

The days of running extension cords to get power to your trim router are over.   Better yet, there is no more need to stop in the middle of routing an edge profile just to untangle your power cord.  Ridgid has addressed these issues with their 18 volt cordless compact router.  Let’s take a look at the Ridgid 18 Volt GEN5X Compact Router Review.

Ridgid 18 Volt GEN5X Compact Router Overview:

Ridgid is a company who has really been pushing some of the unique cordless offerings lately.  This recent release is something many people in the woodworking world will really enjoy as soon as they get the opportunity to work with it.

This tool is referred to as a compact router, a trim router, or a palm router.  As the names imply, its a smaller router that can be easily held and operated in your hand.  Since this compact router is so easy to handle, it’s a great option for not only the seasoned woodworker, but those who are new to the craft as well.

Ridgid 18 Volt GEN5X Compact Router Review Features:

Ridgid only truly made one major change to this router compared to other routers and by now, you probably can figure out what that is.   Instead of plugging the router into a standard outlet, you can run cord free with any of the Ridgid 18 volt batteries.

Whether you are using one of their 2Ah compact batteries or one of their Hyper Lithium 5Ah batteries, this unit will give you the power to run any of your 1/4″ shank bits.

Ridgid added a brushless motor to this unit which gives it a longer run time, more power and a longer life than if they would have gone with a brushed motor.

This router has a variable speed dial which controls the speed at which the router bit spins.  The spindle will rotate from 17,000 RPM to a top speed of 25,000 RPM.

On top of having a macro adjustment to set you bit depth, the Ridgid 18 volt compact router has a micro adjustment.  Just push down on the silver button shown above and turn the dial to achieve your final depth.  There are also very handy arrows to indicate which way the bit will travel when you turn the dial.  I found that to be extremely handy.

The one feature that I found most interesting was the power switch for this tool.  Ridgid mounted this power switch on the side of the unit near the battery.  Now, that isn’t the interesting part.  The thing that threw me for a momentary loop was how the unit is turned on.  The power button has to be pulled out to turn the unit on and pushed back in to shut it off.  It makes sense when you think about it, but it’s just not how I am used to operating a router.

One more feature to note is the single LED light that helps illuminate your cutting surface.  I find you can not have too much light when working with power tools.

Ridgid 18 Volt GEN5X Compact Router Review Performance:

I am extremely pleased with how much power this router has.  There was no discernible difference between this and my other palm routers.  I was able to complete several edge profiles and cut multiple juice grooves into cutting boards that I was making with ease.  I never once had to stop to untangle a cord which pleased me quite a bit.

Battery life on this tool is better than what I would expect.  Even though this tool is rotating a cutter bit at 25,000 RPM, it does so for a very long time on one charge.

One thing that I would like to note…..when you do start to run out of battery, you will be able to tell.  The router starts to bog down and cutting begins to be difficult.  This decline in performance happens pretty fast.  Once you see the drop in perfomance, you will know its time to change out the battery.

Ridgid 18 Volt GEN5X Compact Router Review Value:

Ridgid in my opinion is one of the really unique tool brands.  Some tool brands I consider for homeowner use only, while some other tool brands I would classify as purely professional.  Ridgid on the other hand spans both extremes.  Since they are priced at a very reasonable price point, a home owner can justify the cost for a really good tool and with the Lifetime Service Agreement, a professional can have the confidence that they won’t be buying a new tool every 6 months.

The Ridgid 18 Volt GEN5X Compact Router stays true to what I feel the Ridgid brand is.  Priced at approximately $119 (Bare Tool), this is a no brainer tool if you are already into the Ridgid battery platform.  If not, it might be a good reason to jump into the line.

Ridgid 18 Volt GEN5X Compact Router Review Final Thoughts:

A few years ago, I heard a saying “Find something that annoys you and fix it.”  Its something that really made sense with me.  It looks like Ridgid was thinking the same thing when they designed their cordless compact router.  They have eliminated the one thing with palm routers that always seemed to bug me and they were able to do this without sacrificing power. Nicely done.

The Home Depot

What do you think of when it comes to Bosch?  I know I think of concrete tools, measuring tools and cordless tools.  In the past, I never thought about Bosch as a power tool manufacturer that designs and manufacturers routers.  When it comes to routers I usually think of Porter Cable and Festool for those who have megabucks.   Over the last couple of years, we have tested a variety of Bosch routers and they have really impressed us.  So let’s jump into the Bosch Router Review, model GKF125CE.

Bosch Router Review Overview

I know some of you might try and compare this to the Festool because you might be a hardcore woodworker.  For me, this isn’t competing against the Festool routers.  This router is designed for the carpenter and someone who takes their work seriously.  This is not the router for the hardcore, serious woodworker.

I have always been a huge fan of the Porter Cable router, maybe because that was my first router and I am used to them.  However recently I have been grabbing for my Bosch router, the Colt.  It has been dependable and I just love working with the Bosch Colt.  The router is smooth and easy to maneuver around.  So when I heard Bosch had a new Colt router available, I had to jump at the chance and check out the Bosch GKF125CE.

Before I jump into the features, I want to clarify the models.  Looking around online you will probably see three different models.  You will see the GKF125CE, GKF125CEN, GKF125CEK.  It can be a little confusing so here is a breakdown.

  • GKF125CE – The is the bare tool, router only.
  • GKF125CEN – This comes with a case.
  • GKF125CEK – This is a kit which includes a straight edge.

Bosch Router Review Features

Bosch Router Review

The Bosch Colt Palm router comes in a hard plastic case which protects it when not in use and makes it easy to carry around from place to place.

Bosch Router Review

Opening up the case you will not only find the router but if you bought the kit, you will have a straight edge accessory with it.  There is also a little room for some router bits, but they would have to fit under where the power cord is kept.

The Bosch palm router is very slim and doesn’t weigh much.  Bosch designed this with a 7 Amp motor and it only weighs 4.4 lbs.  The router is a 1.25 hp router which is a bump up from their previous version of 1 hp.  The slim design is 8.25″ high and has a length of 4.134″.  The motor also has a Constant Response system which maintains speed when under load.

The router has finger-support pockets, which provides stability and control while using.  One feature that helps is the ball-joint swivel cord.  I found this nice as I was never fighting the cord when using the router.

Bosch Router Review

Right where your hand rests, Bosch designed it with a nice rubber grip to not only add comfort but also allow the user to have better grip, even if it’s dusty.

Bosch Router Review

Towards the top of the router, there is an on/off button which is red, making it easy to see.  Some may or may not like the setup.  The button is recessed and some might have a hard time turning it on and off, but I like the set up so I will never accidentally bump it to the off position.

The variable speed is controlled using a dial switch on top of the router.  You can set it from 1-6, which is equivalent to a no-load speed of 6,000-35,000 rpms.

Bosch Router Review

On the bottom of the router, sits two LED lights.  While we didn’t test it in the dark, the two LED lights do a great job eliminating most of the shadows and do a good job lighting up your work area.

Bosch Router Review

To change a bit, there is a large red collet stop.  So instead of needing two wrenches, you can use the stop button with a single wrench.

Bosch Router Review

The router has a 1/4″ Collet Capacity.  The router will accept bits up to 1-5/16″ wide.

Taking the base on and off is easy.  There is a single lever, like most other routers.  Just depress and remove the base.

Bosch Router Review

On the side, there are large engraved numbers that indicate your depth.  The side shows both inches and metric.

While this router is one of my favorites, here is where the router shines.  I love how easy it is to get a precise depth.  Just turn the knob and you can adjust the wheel. While there are a lot of routers that will allow the user to have micro depth adjustments, the Bosch just seems so easy and so smooth.  No chattering or jumping when making adjustments.  Very easy and accurate.

Bosch Router Review Performance

Bosch Router Review

I used this router a lot when we were replacing the soffits.  While I understand that a bit has a lot to do with the quality of the cut and the user feedback, I can say I loved using this router.  The router is smooth, easy to handle and love the soft start.

Bosch Router Review

The depth adjustment system is awesome and head and shoulders above the competition.  The depth adjustment is very easy to set up and a user can be extremely accurate.

Bosch Router Review Value

On Amazon, you can get the GKF125CEN for about $120.  For some reason on the pictures, they also show the straight edge, but that is not included.  You have to get the GKF125CEK in order to get the straight edge.

Either way, you will find these between $120 and $140 (Kit), which I think it’s worth every penny.  Considering how smooth and easy they are to handle, it makes a routing job so much easier.

Bosch Router Review Final Thoughts

The Bosch GKF125CE is a hidden gem among a long line of Bosch tools.  The router is comfortable, easy to use, easy to maneuver around and easy to control.  With a price tag of around $140, I think this is a great investment for those who want performance.

Routers are one of my favorite power tools.  A router is a great way to take a finished project and turn it into a master piece.  With a router, you can pretty much add any detail and completely change the look of it.  As we know, routers take a lot of power when you start cutting into the wood.  While battery technology has improved over the years, it’s not until recently that the brushless motor and battery technology have combined and let manufacturers design higher demand tools based on cordless solutions. Speaking of cordless, let’s jump into the Makita cordless router review.

Makita Cordless Router Review Overview

Makita Cordless Router Review

Makita designed a router where you no longer have to worry about a cord getting in the way.  Yes, that’s right they have a 18v router on the market that allows you to be more mobile.  If you have been following us for a while, you know that Ridgid and Ryobi have both released their version of a cordless router, so Makita isn’t the first to market with this concept.

However, Makita is the first professional company with a such a large line of power tools to offer a cordless router.

Makita Cordless Router Review Features

Before I jump into the router, I want to take a look at the accessories.  I love how Makita went above and beyond.  Makita didn’t just build a cordless router, they built a usable system.  They designed a variety of accessories that woodworkers demand.  You have a plunge base, dust management, straight edge, clamps and more.  So for me, I am already impressed.

Makita Cordless Router Review

Makita designed this with a brushless motor for efficiency and longer run times.  The motor is electronically controlled to work with changes in torque and speed depending upon changing demands.  The router uses 1/4″ shanks.

Makita Cordless Router Review

On the front of the router is where you access the lock and on/off switch.  I am sure some people would have preferred a bump switch, but the pad set up isn’t bad and is easy to get used to.  One key feature of this router is the soft start.  I love turning on the router and not having to worry about the jerkiness.

Makita Cordless Router Review

On the side of the Makita router is a dial switch that allows the user to control the speed.  A user can control the speed from 10,000 to 30,000 rpm’s so you can match the router with your work.

Changing the router bits is extremely easy.  I didn’t find myself fighting with the router. The large red spindle stop is easy to control while trying to loosen or tighten a bit.

The router has two LED lights.  While I didn’t use them, they do seem like they would be helpful as you always seem to get some type of shadow with routers.

While I love the smoothness and power of the router, I really love how easy it is to control the depth and make micro adjustments.  The rack and pinion are very smooth and easy to fine tune.

Makita Cordless Router Review Performance

I used this router for a computer desk top I was making for my kids.  I didn’t want to do anything fancy because I know they will beat the heck out of it and draw all over it.  So I ended up staining some plywood.

Makita Cordless Router Review

The first thing I noticed was how easy this router is to work with.  I love the slim design but most importantly I love the soft start.

Makita Cordless Router Review

The router is extremely powerful and even the piece of oak I tested it on, the router went through great.

Makita Cordless Router Review Makita Cordless Router Review

As far as run time, that will vary on the type of wood and size of router bit you are using.  I ran this router over 20′ of plywood, 8 feet of oak and about 10′ of pine.  Once I was done the battery still had four bars.

Makita Cordless Router Review Value

Value is going to depend on what you are looking for.  When it comes to cordless routers, currently you have three to choose from and the Makita is the most expensive.  Even though it’s the most expensive, it’s still my top choice for a number of reasons.

First, is all the options this router has such as a plunge base.  Second, there are a ton of tools in the 18V line up. Third and most important is the quality of the router.  If you already own Makita batteries, you will spend about $130 for the router only.  Not a bad investment for a quality router.

Makita Cordless Router Final Thoughts

Overall this is an awesome router.  I love how Makita didn’t cut any corners with this router.  They made a router that is identical to a corded router but without a cord.  Makita offers all the accessories with this router.  The router is smooth and has a decent run time.  The router is powerful and is just one of those tools you have to use to appreciate.  Anyone looking to lose the cord should check out the Makita.

Here is the deal.  I love woodworking but by no means am I an expert.  As you know I am a huge fan of Bosch and love their tools.  Since I love woodworking and love Bosch, why not check out the Bosch Colt palm router, so here we are.

Bosch Colt Palm RouterBefore I get into stats I have to say that I love this router.  Now I haven’t built a bedroom set with it, but I have been using it and absolutely love it.  First, is the size and comfort.  I love these small routers for small jobs.  With the Bosch, it fits perfectly into my hand and it’s very comfortable.  I love the soft start feature so it doesn’t jerk your arm off when you start it.  Again, I am not a professional with routers, so the one thing I always notice is the first five seconds I am pushing the router instead of letting the router do the work.  However, because of this fault, I really had the chance to see how well this router works as it has a constant response.  The constant response means it will detect changes and will adjust the motor accordingly, which is a very cool option.

The router uses a 5.6 amp motor that will produce a 1 HP max.  On top of the router is a variable speed dial that will allow you to adjust the speed from 16,00 to 35,000 rpm.  I did notice that the dial doesn’t move or adjust by itself even under heavy conditions.  So you can feel confident that the speed dial will stay in place and not wander on you.  Making adjustments to depth is very easy.  There is a simple lever you can adjust and make your changes.  The router comes with with a wrench to change bits.

I used to be a huge fan of Porter Cable routers, but I have to say this is my second Colt and I am hooked on the Bosch palm routers.  There is just something about this that makes a job fun and easy.  If you are looking for a palm router, you have to check out the Colt router by Bosch.

Ryobi currently has a palm router on the market that runs on their 18V platform.  If you check it out at Home Depot, people love the router and give it high praise.  So if you think that is a good palm router, you have to check out their updated palm router model P601.  This is a huge step up.

When I say it’s a big step up, this palm router feels great, feels like a quality router and has some great features to it.  Now,  you’re not going to use this router to create a house since it’s cordless, but this router has plenty of power to get a ton of small jobs done.  For most people, they want to use a router to put finishing touches on a project, but sometimes it can be a pain to take out a corded router, set it up and do your work.  With the Ryobi, just grab a battery, insert a bit and start your work.  Besides it being a quality router, what I really like about this router is it shows Ryobi is really trying to make a wide variety of tools for the homeowner.  Not that everyone will run out and get this tool, but there are those people who have the 18V line and don’t want to make a heavy investment into a corded router that will end up sitting around most of the time.

Ryobi Cordless Palm Router

With this router, you will get about 600 linear feet per charge, but again that depends on the type of wood and your bit.  In regards to power and speed, this router doesn’t lack.  The 1/4″ collect can spin at 29,000 which can make any final touches look like a pro did the work.  The quick release level is metal, not plastic, a huge plus.  There is also a LED light to help light up your work while working and keeping you in line.

All in all, this is a great router.  It’s a solid palm router that has the feel and power of the more expensive corded versions.  Removing the base is easy, but you do have to make sure the collect lock lever is pushed in so you can take the base off all the way.  The grip is nice and easy to maneuver due to the great design of the tool.

Ridgid 18V RouterA router is one of my favorite tools.  A router can turn any woodworking project into a master piece, it’s like the icing on a cake.  Considering there are hundreds of bits on the market, you can finish off your master piece with pretty much any design.  However, in order to create these beautiful finishing touches, you need a solid router.  I have always been a fan of Porter Cable routers for my big boy routers.  When it comes to compact or trim routers, I have fallen in love with the Bosch.  Now as good as these routers are, I am always dealing with the cord getting in the way.  Not that it’s a huge deal because I am used to it, but I would rather focus on my work and not a cord getting in the way.  Recently I found out that Ridgid might have a way to solve my problem and that is with the new Ridgid 18V Router.  Very cool, a cordless router.  While I loved the idea of not having a cord, I was still a little skeptical because this is the type of tool that needs power and some fancy options to go along with it.  So I wasn’t sure how this router would stack up compared to other compact or trim routers.

Ridgid decided to break the mold and design the first ever cordless router.  The router runs off their popular 18V battery platform, so you can expand into more tools downRidgid 18V Router the road.  When they designed this router, Ridgid started from the inside out and designed this router with a brushless motor.  Starting the router up, the first thing I noticed was the soft start.  I love when companies design routers with soft starts.  Not only is it easier on your wrist, but it just feels like a quality router.  Now I know what you’re thinking, how much work can be done with a cordless router?  Well with a Ridgid 5Ah battery you can cut up 400′ of laminate, not too bad.

The on/off button might take a little getting used to.  Normally I am used to a push button on/off switch.  With the Ridgid, you have to pull a button out to turn on the machine.  When you are done with your work, just push the button in.  I’m kind of digging this set up because as soon as I am done, I can move my thumb up and turn it off.  On the back of the unit, there is a dial which allows you to adjust the speeds from 17,000 rpm to 25,000 rpm.

Ridgid 18V RouterMaking adjustments with the router is pretty much like any other router.  There is a quick release lever on the front.  Besides the quick release lever, there is a micro adjustment to make those fine tune adjustments.  The dial is smooth and really allows you to fine tune the depth of the bit.  The built-in LED light does a decent job of showing you your working area.  Along with the LED light, the unit has a dust ejection port which also helps keep a clear line of sight.

I have to admit that when I first saw this router I was excited, but then the idea of having a cordless router set in and I really wondered how well this unit would perform.  After using it, I have say this thing has plenty of power and a long run time.  I love how all the dials feel solid.  Nothing seems cheap on this router.  While I would have loved to seen a hard case, the provided soft case is decent.  I love the fact that they included a round and square plate, plus an edge guide.  If you don’t believe how killer this router is, just check out The Home Depot and see what others have said about it.

Ridgid 18V Router Specifications

  • Collet size – .25″
  • Router Size – 7″
  • Weight – 2.4 lbs.
  • Variable Speed – 17,000 – 25,000

So is this going to replace your bad boy big router? No.  It’s not meant to be a replacement for the bigger routers.  But for a trim router, this router rocks.  I think when Ridgid designed the first ever cordless router, they didn’t hold anything back.  This is smooth and powerful.  The Ridgid 18V router has all the bells and whistles you will find with other compact routers.  Everything on this router is smooth, from adjusting the variable speed to adjusting the depth. Bottom line, if you are looking for a great compact router and want to lose the cord, this is the router to have.  I will put this against other corded trim routers all day long.  With a life time warranty, it’s hard to beat.

What do you think of when you heard the word Milwaukee?  Okay, let me rephrase that because when I hear the word Milwaukee I think cheese, beer, Laverne and Shirley and a sub par baseball team.  Sorry I had to throw that one in since I am a Cubs fan, but I guess I can’t talk since we haven’t won a World Series since 1908.  I should say what do you think of when you hear the words Milwaukee Tools?  You probably think innovation, brushless and a whole lot of other new ideas about an old company.  One word that probably will not come to mind is Router.  That’s why when we heard a bunch of you talk about and ask us to review the router, we were a little curious.  Well it turns out not only does Milwaukee make a great brushless line, but they make a pretty good router.

Now it might take some searching, but yes Milwaukee does sell routers.  You may be asking why doesn’t Milwaukee focus more on their miter saw and routers?  Well Milwaukee wants to leave the woodworking to other companies and Milwaukee wants to focus on their main specialty items such as their cordless line.  With that being said, that’s why you don’t hear a lot about their routers.  The router we are going to cover is the 5616-21 which is a 13 amp 2-1/4 max hp router.  So not necessarily a lightweight.  This is designed to be used by serious woodworkers. One thing serious woodworkers do is go through large amounts of material.  With that in mind Milwaukee designed this router with a feedback motor which monitors the load and maintains the speed under load.  Yes, it is a variable speed which has a range of 10,000 to 24,000 rpm.

Okay, I am not going say I am a hard-core router guy who uses a router everyday. However I do use them and have some experience with them.  Picking the router up, it has some weight, 8.8 lbs to be exact.  For me, I love the weight.  Now if it was a trim router, then the weight would suck, but considering the type of router, I love it.  I feel it gives me greater control and more accuracy.  With the Bodygrip design, this is pretty easy to control even for someone like me who doesn’t have patience and just wants to rip through large amounts of wood instead of taking a couple passes.

I have to say using the features of this router was a huge surprise to me.  Again, I don’t look at Milwaukee for being a company who makes a killer router.  However this router is very easy to use.  The micro fine adjust is easy to move within 1/64″. Adjusting the depth is also very easy, especially compared to some of the other brands we have tested.  If you are a fan of router tables, then you will like how easy it is to adjust the depth while it sits in a table.  Yes, you can adjust the depth above the router table.

As with some of the other bigger routers, this will accept both 1/4 and 1/2″ collet bits.  The one problem I have with trying to explain power tools is the ease of use and how well a tool works.  Well this router is no different.  This is one of those routers you just have to get your hands on to try.  Trust me it will surprise you.  Now I am not saying this is the best router on the market, but I am saying it is the best router you never heard of.  It’s a sleeping giant that is pissed it doesn’t get the exposure it should.

buyamazon1Milwaukee 5616-21 EVS BodyGrip Router Kit

In the end I have to say this is one killer router.  Now I am not saying it is better than Porter Cable, Bosch, Hitachi or Festool.  I am just saying this is a great router and a great alternative to the other brands on the market.  It should be one you look at when you are shopping for routers.  Before this review I would have passed up the opportunity to look at this router.  All I can say is I am glad all of you brought this to our attention.
